I cannot get enough of your videos. I’m way to cautious when deciding color. I love the purple underpainting on the hill in the foreground, and the all around color. Also, deciding what to leave out seemed as big a challenge as what to leave into the picture. That hillside had so much happening. What a great all around exercise in plein air work. And the fog rolling in sort of makes sure u don’t linger too long on the exercise. Awesome
Pushing the hill back was nice. It really brings the focus on the houses nicely. As the fog rolled in, I wondered if you have ever explicitly gone out to paint a fog scene. Talk about atmospherics! It'd make a nice video, but I guess it's hard to plan to paint something like that. You probably never know when it's going to come. Nice piece.
you're so brilliant! especially i love your en plein air work! this beautiful weather! And your did such a outstanding painting! i'm very happy to watch your journey my friend! Have a good day❤️
Looks great! I just found your channel a couple of days ago and have watched a bunch of your vids. I'm focused more on portrait and figure work for now but I really dig your Plein Air style. Seeing you use that little viewer box thing at the beginning and talking about pushing that background further to get a better composition is GOLD, came across really well over the video. cheers!
Thanks Scott! Thanks for the feedback! These videos are pretty casual and spontaneous so I'm glad the ideas I'm sharing are coming across in a clear way.
I wish I could go back and paint again. Health issues now so just fond memories . You give me ideas to try to achieve my own look instead of good student copying. Thanks. Love art.
Super cool Michael. Good call on the rock. At first I thought it looked great with it but when you removed it I could see it was the right call. Colors are spot on and really pop against the distant mountain. Love it dude.
Beautiful painting, sir! I love the energy of the water! I think it's awesome and effective. You definitely know how to paint water (and many other things as well). Great job!
It's a beautiful painting and I love the scene, I remembeer well last time you painted there. I'll check it out again I want to see the difference between both paintings.
Boat docks and a companion of quality From chaos, basic shapes with geometry Squints at subject, Tad tackles the shack Fog coming in but not a set back Returns to the scene with fresh eyes Patreon is a plus, as name implies 😁 Great work resulted for both artists. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💚🌻
Michael, at 4.38 to 4.44 , a cool dancing reflection of reflected light as you mix the sky blue, it’s in the shadow of the alizarin container sitting on your palette, hope you get time to see that. I think I remember an earlier painting from this location, the reflections in the wet sand mirrored bottomless pits as a thin layer of clear sea water defies gravity across the openings, I remember it was here. In this case you’re drawn a little more inland to it’s structures, adding the touches of white you spoke of will really set that shore scene alive, ( your tune up of which you spoke). There is a beautiful eye in the waves, foreground right , a third ways in from right. Like promised candy , you speak of returning to paint here again, many beautiful paintings are “” right here “”, thank you Michael, it is good to see you out “” with your fresh eyes”” < -- ( yes, you said that ). Merry Christmas Michael, , love your creativity : )
Beautiful painting. There is a view outside the restaurant at the Berkeley Marina looking South that is similar and quite interesting. Also a nice place to paint. You can watch people with their small boats there.
Thanks Elisabeth! I rarely get over to Berkeley due to the traffic on the Bay Bridge, but I'll keep it in mind. I did sail a small boat there once and it was a lot of fun.
It was cool to compare the work on the two videos! Thanks for linking that! Both paintings were great but yes, really different in the waves and sunlight and how you handled the buildings. The ol’ wave storm is getting pretty beat up! Is that the same surf board you still use? I started watching your videos early this year, watching the current ones and watching from the beginning, and I recently reached the time when you got the board and started practicing surfing. I was pretty shocked that you haven’t been surfing for years and years, it seems so integral to your personality. So here’s to hearing your muse and answering the call. I know the surfing was in the linked video, not this one, but just wanted to comment once. 🏄♀️ 🌊 🎨
As soon as I posted this the you tube lineup showed me your review of the newer board and answered my questions along with your comments about trying things even when you are older. I am the same age as you I think. Never surfed. But I’m a big fan of not being afraid to try new things you want to do. Your painting inspires me. Thanks for sharing so much of your process and philosophy.
I grew up in Linda Mar and this beach is home to me! Well done! Please message me the sale price when it becomes available. Thank you so much for sharing your skills with us, Michael 😊
Thank you very much for your videos! I like them a lot. Refering to your brushes... I wonder what´s the difference in painting with natural or synthetic bristle brushes. Do they make a different kind of mark? Best wishes - Nicole
Perhaps I can help!! They indeed make very different marks. Synthetic brushes have very fine bristles and very clean, sharp edges. Which are nice if you want very sharp clean brush strokes. Natural bristle brushes have more jagged edges and make for a less sharp brush strokes. Natural bristles are also much stiffer. My personal favorites are synthetic bristles. Princeton makes a great line called the Aspen. They are very firm (good to manipulate oil paint) and they have sharp clean edges. Some synthetics are very soft and make it hard to manipulate thick oil paint. It just depends on how thick you paint. Was that helpful at all?
I use natural bristle brushes to scrub in the first stages of the painting. Natural bristle brushes seem to hold more paint and I can cover the panel quickly. I usually switch to synthetic brushes for the later stages of the painting because they allow for more control.
Alizarin OIL PAINT is fine when used in mixes. Lightfast rating of 2 which is totally acceptable. It's an irreplaceable color in my opinion. Don't use it for tints or glazes and you'll be ok.
The slow drying time of oil paint is actually helpful. Beautiful things can happen when you paint wet paint over wet paint. You can always add a quick drying medium like Liquin if you want to speed up the drying process.
