John Milton is most famous for his epic poem "Paradise Lost" but he is also well known for his prose and other poetry that he wrote throughout his life. Sometimes involved in controvery and other times secluded in a hamlet composing verse and rhyme Milton would become one of the greatest writers in English history. He lived in the age of Shakespeare and Francis Bacon and these poetic and chaotic times would provide Milton with the energy and perspective needed to change the course of history in terms of English writing. I hope you enjoy these poems of Milton that were selected to be in the Harvard Classics.

3:04 I like how you link horizon to joys we cannot reach since the definition of horizon is an unreachable place unless we die, because horizon means the meeting place between the heavens and the earth

Lycidas is perfection itself. Milton composes nighttime pastorals like no one else. You definitely get a sense of the sublime when reading Milton because he formulates his writing as a composer of music would (Milton was an avid organ player). My recommendation with Milton is to focus on how he is able to achieve the sublime in his writing when he gravitates toward opposite extremes. Ill Penseroso and L'Allegro focus on the dichotomies of melancholy and mirth whereas Lycidas is an exploration of idyllic poetry where grief and elegy is concerned. I would definitely pay close attention to hell vs heaven vs Eden when reading PL. You're in for a ride. Milton is often written off as a poet's poet, but he's just as essential as Shakespeare to English lit.

Great info and thanks so much for explaining that. This is my first time reading through Milton and it has been quite the brain bender and very rewarding. I am finding his works so enjoyable. Really looking forward to Paradise Lost and I will keep that in mind as I read through it. Thanks for watching my friend!

I enjoyed the walk through the country side but coffee was actually what took his melancholy away. Still works to this day. You should try it…

For his shorter works, I most like “Lycidas” and “Sonnet 19: When I consider how my light is spent” (also titled “On His Blindness”).
@The_Cause

Both are good! The more I read about his blindness the more I was blown away. I am going to mention it in Paradise Lost but he wrote PL while blind. His daughter wrote it out while he dictated to her. Crazy!

Haha yes indeed. I understand the importance of learning institutions but so much can be learned by sitting down with a good book and being disciplined in the content you consume. I hope people are able to use this series as a supplement to their reading and truly find joy in this series. Thanks for sitting in my class today and stay blessed my friend! Lol

Thanks again, Rob, for such thoughtful videos! I struggle with poetry-yet some poems touch me deeply (I know what I like). Milton had nothing but disdain for rhyming verse, but I struggle with feeling poetic meter-thus reading Paradise Lost aloud (or with sub-vocalizations greatly enhanced my appreciation. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on PL!

Thanks so much my friend! I kind of feel similar to you. Reading out loud has helped me better understand some of the poems. The grammar can differ just enough to throw off my understanding sometimes. Truly appreciate you watching and definitely looking forward to reading Paradise Lost. Stay blessed buddy!

haha yes indeed! Sadly they informed me that the Colombian mill that process the Don Enrique shut down so it is not possible to get anymore. Really bummed because that was one of the best Colombian coffees I had tasted. Replaced it with a Costa Rican that I have been enjoying. Love to hear that the coffee is being enjoyed!

“That which is not good is not delicious to a well governed and wise appetite.” Excellent! Parents should strive to cultivate appetites for truth, goodness, and beauty in their children so that they have no desire for the base and wicked things of this world.
@The_Cause

Completely agree. Milton had such an elegant way of saying it. It’s becoming harder and harder with all the temptations out there for the children’s time and attention. Teaching morals and virtues to young children to include temperance and patience is so important now days. It’s just as hard on the parents as the kids see what other kids can do and wonder why they can’t do and get away with the same. Thanks so much for watching and stay blessed!

Excellent video! "Be wise, and taste," sounds like the serpent talking to Eve, but the order of the words is reversed. The serpent says, "Taste, and be wise." I wonder why Milton reversed the order of the words.

Didn’t even catch that!! I am sure Milton has all kinds of things like that scattered throughout the poems. Glad you mentioned it because I would have missed that. Thanks Nick!

5:12 interesting poem on time there I must say. that poem can be sum up in one sentence which is found in the Qur'an, the first Verse from a chapter called Time (Asr): It says: - By time, Verily mankind is in loss. means most of what we spend our time on, isn't the most beneficial thing and the answer is given in the next Verse saying: except those who have faith, benefit themselves and benefit others

Could you imagine that much time to just "self improvement"? Crazy. The poems he wrote during the English Civil War covers the issues and the people of that time. If you do not have the context of those individuals or what was going on these poems will not make too much sense in my opinion. They are still good though. Thanks so much for watching my friend and as always.. stay blessed!

@@The_Cause it would be great to have that much time for self improvement but I have to wonder what happens if someone says they're trying to get good for several years. do they work towards a specific goal? do they compete? do they make something and try to sell it to someone? do they try to find a successor? what are they doing lol how do they prove to themselves or anyone else that their use of time was justified? is that even needed?
@The_Cause

I think someone as disciplined as Milton it would work. He could easily write in Greek, Latin and Hebrew at this time and apparently he read a lot when you start learning more about him. You give me 5-6 years of free time and you best believe I am playing around and having fun for at least 4 of it! Haha

8:50 anther lesson in the poem i think is that alcohol brings the worse out in human, look at the "god of alcohol" action, he's letting his lust control him to the extent hes kidnapping, similarly for anyone' else- alcohol brings out lust interesting she said that "she wouldn't disturb her freedom in thinking" when she was offer wine, which also shows that alcohol takes away rationality
