Funny enough, the Sephirothmon is one of the digimons that make the most sense. It is based on the Sephiroth tree, a kabbalistic concept that represents the 10 virtues of god. They are represented by 10 spheres tied to each other, creating the same form depicted in Sephirothmon design. So aside from the eyes and mouth, he is 1.1 a perfect recreation of his inspiration.
Psychemon came from a class of recolor digimon created solely to be NPC enemies in digimon world 1. I think they went that route because they wanted players to be able to distinguish them from NPCs and their partner digimon in the overworld and in battles.
Also, isn't his evolution suppose to be Psychemon > Astamon > Belphemon (Sleep Mode) > Belphemon (Rage Mode)? At least in the sources I found. Weird that they would say he has no evolutions....
@@TimmyTheNerd they said he has no pre-form evolution, they were trying to see if he came from the same baby and or in-training as Gabumon (which side note, atleast in one of the Digimon world games, he evolves from Lalamon, so no they don't share a pre-evolution and that actually makes Psychemon a Champion form not a rookie like Gabumon, which "alt" color pallet forms being champion is actually decently common) (extra side note, looking into it more their most recent feature being in Digimon world: next order they did make them an alternate path for Tsunomon so yea they share their in-training form with Gabumon now)
@@TimmyTheNerd No canon line like the Gabumon -> Garurumon -> WereGarurumon -> MetalGarurumon. The guys are also using the Digimon Wiki which only states canon lines. Wikimon has both Psychemon -Warp-> Astamon -> Belphemon, which comes from the MMO DMO which used Psychemon -> Astamon -> Belphemon SM - > Belphemon RM as its 4 stage line... even though it goes Rookie -> Ultimate -> Mega -> Mega. Currently the most canon line for Belphemon is Phascomon -> Porcupamon -> Astamon -> Belphemon SM/RM. Its a very interesting thing. Similarly for pre-evos, Tsunomon is most common, but since it isn't canon enough for the Digimon Wiki, it is not stated.
SnowAgumon would have been such a great followup to Psychemon. The 180 from completely unrelated name to the same name with a prefix would have been gold.
as far as i know Psychemon and Gabumon came from the same baby form, called Tsunomon. and just like how Koromon can evolve to different variant of Agumon like Toy Agumon/Black Agumon etc. Tsunomon can also evolve to different variant of Gabumon
Depending on which game they are in it's different, the original games it had no pre-form, then in Data Squad it was a Champion level Digimon that evolved from Lalamon, and in the most recent games yea its a branching evolution from Tsunomon now. Digimon is full of retcons and evolution tree shake-ups.
@@demikus honestly for me i don't know that much about the game. since most of my knowledge about digimon is from anime and manga some wiki that i read cause i don't play the game that much and the most recent game i played was cyber sleuth that i haven't finished yet, and i think i haven't even reach half of the game yet. i don't know why Data Squad game treat him as champion level since i pretty sure Psychemon was Rookie level on every previous anime/manga/game. i might be wrong about this, since my memory wasn't the best and yeah i agree Digimon evolution tree was really complicated. especially for someone that just know about digimon. since a digimon can evolve into entirely different digimon that seems like unrelated based on their condition or how they treated/raised when they evolve even external factor also can affect their evolution like how Greymon turned into Skull Greymon in Digimon Adventure because of Tai negative feeling. or like every rookie digimon can turn into Numemon/Sukamon if not cared in digimon world game unlike Pokemon that 95% that are straight line and only a few that have branch evolution and easier requirement to evolve. it can be hard to follow Digimon branch evolution the only digimon that i know that have stright line of Digivolution is Arkadimon since his evolution condition was a bit unique where he need to eat/absorb data of other digimon to evolve. unless they change that too in newer digimon game that i highly possibly didn't know
Back at it again I see! For future refrence, use Wikimon over the Digimon Wiki for more detailed information. Gabumon: Fun Fact TIME! His name comes from the Gabu Kashira, a toy puppet with two faces. Using a string, the normal docile face transforms into a monstrous face. Fits with how Gabumon often hides itself under the pelt made of data from its evolved form, but also is a reptile monster rather than a mammal. The two faces aspect is explored pretty well in the design. Sephirothmon: This thing is a horrifying thing that has connections to Jewish Mysticism. Unfortunately, most people know Sephiroth from Final Fantasy, which has nothing to do with actual Sephiroths... THIS depiction is actually closer to what a Sephiroth is compared to 40 meter sword pretty boy. In English, the creature's name is Sakakumon which means illusion in Japanese (Edit: No shit since there cannot be a reference to religions at the time they were localizing it... that is the entire reason Slifer the Sky Dragon was named after the Executive Producer of YGO since its original name was Osiris... but then Ra was allowed? Wow that became a tangent). A more fitting name as it is the holder of the knowledge of the Legendary Warriors with the power to create illusiory foes within itself. It is wholly a creepy design that fits an antagonist (which it was), but IMO the design itself doesn't SCREAM Metal to me. Porcupamon: This BDSM gas mask porcupine is a horrifying thing based off a Teddy Bear. It pretty much is a Porcupine Gimp. Nothing more to say there. It does evolve into a gangster and can eventually become the Demon Lord of Sloth. Buddy here hasn't really shown up much in media or games. The CARD GAME is what actually somewhat canonized its connection to a Demon Lord. Kiwimon: OK... this thing should be simple. This is actually a very clever depiction of a Kiwi. It combines both the plant and the bird counterparts of the name and makes it a canonical evolution to a lot of Plant Digimon. It has an entire line based off Plants + Bird hybrids. Dinohumon: The name is legit just Dinosaur + Human + Digimon... not joking here. One of its earliest showings was from Digimon World 3, where it was part of a blade based line with various other digimon that wielded swords. A game did reveal that he was part of a line that eventually would become one of the deities of the anime world. His role in an anime move included a Beast vs Humanoid war, where he was leading the humanoid faction. Psychemon: Yeah... this guy was made to be a recolor. It first appeared Digimon World 1 had it as an enemy and it was unobtainable to the player. Most likely this is because Gabumon is both an NPC and a partner digimon, so they made Psychemon to allow you to differentiate between friend and foe. It is named after its behavior as it likes to use the colors on its body alongside its colorful electrical sparks to confuse and stun an enemy with dazzling displays. The designs of it and Gabumon used to be identical, but some 2011 redesigns changed to belly marking into a skull.
Thank you for your amazing trivia! Also thank you for the advice! We've recorded episodes up to October 30th in advance at the moment, but you'll likely be seeing information taken from Wikimon instead of the Digimon Wiki in videos released after that.
The funny thing about Sephiroth is that there is another character in Final Fantasy called Sephirot in FFXIV for some reason, and he also does not look like the sephiroth.
Now that I think it carefully, the naming 'norms' in Digimon are indeed complicated. Like some are technically easy as to just add something that can describes their appearance - like the Ancient Warrior Ten, that are Ancient predecessors of many species - which are the most easy names to catch. Then there's other Digimon that are named after a certain way that has a meaning behind their lore or design like the Demon Lords and the Three Great Angels. Then you have DORUmon and JESmon, who are named as acronyms - DORU is Digital OR Unknown, JES is because of "Justice, Edge and Swordsman" whixh many originally thought that he was named after Jesus -. And sadly we have does who names don't hold meaning, but is often the localization that has that thing with Omnimon and Machinedramon.
Honestly, I don't really get why there even needs to be strict norms. I think it's fine and less limiting to be able to do whatever you want/what suits your needs (different languages, acronyms, descriptors, etc.). The only ones I dislike are when the original name is clearly based on an existing word but gets misspelled like Centalmon (a centaur Digimon) or Orgemon (an ogre Digimon) or when it gets localized but they stick with the romanization of the Japanese name for some reason like Kurisarimon (a chrysalis Digimon).
Appreciate the actual fans for countering the "It's just a recolor" by calling out Pokemon's recent laziness of regional forms and convergent evolutions
With early Digimon there were a lot of recoloured species due to the limitations they had with the very small monochrome pixelated screens they were on.
for the answer to sephirothmon, its cause its based on the Jewish mythology and the tree of Kabbalah. His design is based off the Symbol drawn of Sephirot.
Sephirothmon is named after the sephiroth of the Kabbalah, which is what his body looks like. Basically... its 10 attributes that show how "God" made the universe.
There actually is a thing called Slide Evolution where you can go from one Digimon to another of the same level, so it would be possible for a Gabumon to turn into a Psychemon and vice versa.
Some already explained the names of Sephirothmon etc. If I have to add one thing, it's that they have to understand that most of the recolors were done for limitations reasons, not laziness. Pokemon Red and Blue had a sprite system with a front and a back only that moved with translations. The first main Digimon RPG, Digimon World was fully 3D with Digimons walking, running, turning around, screaming, with different animations for attacks and a special attack each, a defense position, a KO position and a position where they had a brain fog. Now add to that the animations that only your partners will have like pushing, expressing physically several levels of joy, sadness or anger, nodding, eating, shitting. That's a lot of animation for a RPG on PS1 and calling that laziness is stupid. The solution was to use recolors, but they only used them for enemies, so you still had 61 Digimons (enough for a long playthrough, the game doesn't play like Pokemon) without recolors in them. With a current total of 1481 Digimons, without the Appmons, 118 are recolors with 36 of them coming from Digimon World (Psychemon is one of them, Soulmon also but it's not a recolor) so around a third. Several are still physically recognisable (Fugamon and Hyougamon with the number of horns and Hyougamon's mace for example). Some were made for story purpose (Black War Greymon, the Chaos Digimons). They are complaining about Digimon names, but I don't think they could explain the name of some Pokemons without checking the wiki, like the first time you heard the name Pikachu, Nidorino, the Zu in Zubat, why Farfetch'd, Gyarados, Lapras (from the french mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace apparently ???), Togepi, Nacli, Espathra, Ogerpon, etc. Kiwimon was easy, same goes for Petermon, Tankmon, SunFlowmon, Rosemon, Leomon, Goblimon, Ogremon etc. The reverse also happens. Yes, some Pokemon's names are easy to understand and most of the Digimon you showed have difficult name. But stop with the generalization. For the next one, you should go with ToyAgumon, ClearAgumon, Gotsumon, Icemon, Insekimon (all from Digimon World btw), Wormmon (from Hornworm and not a normal worm), the badly translated MedievalDukemon, called in english MedicalGallantmon (why Medical?), Aequcedramon (a fan-made Digimon from a crowdfunding, from a guy who tried to put too many things AE=AEro, QU=aQUa, CE=iCE)
Next time you have to have the guess Gottsumon, Icemon, and Meteormon. You can just tell that they're using DigimonWiki and not Wikimon (nothing wrong with DigimonWiki it's just not as good for checking what Digimon evolve to and from as Wikimon, DigimonWiki has other strengths).
They joked on Sephirothmon being a biblically accuarated angel, and it technically is, as long as I know, the thing that was named "Sephiroth" first was something from a text from certain religion, problem is I don't remember which it was (I know it was not Christianity, but I think it was a Hebrew religion or something)
The thing about digimon is that their evolutions are all based on the emotions and motivation of their tamer. Having a shit day, falling into depravity, thinking you're useless, being hostile to those around your loved ones; yeah, you're gonna have a dark evolution form. Full of inspiration, hope, joy, believing in yourself and friends, thats a positive evolution. Unlike pokemon where its a linear path regardless how you train them and treat them they'll always evolve into their designated path. But digimon is infinite possibilities. You can go from villains like impmon to someone more heroic like beelzemon or something more evil like BoltBoutamon. As said in a video "pokemon teaches you its okay to be a kid. But digimon teaches you it's okay to grow up"
Holy fuck. I love you guys even more. Dance Gavin dance is my favorite band and the homie in the top right is wearing a shirt 🥲 today I’m finally gonna learn his name lmao
Sephirothmon is literally sephiroth-shaped, I don't know what to tell you guys 😅 Also I too would recommend using Wikimon as a reference, cause it has lots of images and overall much better evolution references, etc.
A good website for Digimon info is Wikimon, there they say that yes, Psychemon does evolve from Tsunomon Just to let you all know, Wikimon uses the Japanese names for Digimon so for example there you won’t see Gallantmon, you’ll see Dukemon(it’s Japanese name)
You guys should try out questions that include digimon that have had multiple names in different translations (ones that have more than one answer). There's a few that come to mind that have about 3 names in english due to translation issues in the show or due to rules with the production bible of the franchise requiring digimon to have specific names, even when they have had established names before lol Also Dinohyumon for the win. Had that guy's digivolution line in a few games (and they're also related to a digimon with name oddities)
I'm getting back into Digimon stuff and even binged the other episodes of your series of "name that Digimon". I can say that is the best digimon related content that I managed to find so far.
@@stevensiegert Is always entertaining to see people molding, even more if is over something you love, and know they are right by doing so. But beside the fun, I learned a good amount of trivia over the episodes. Is not just jokes, is also people who really like the franchise and that is my favorite kind of content.
I would have loved it if after the psychemon slide he did blackgabumon just to fucking enrage them to the point of no return. They see a 3rd gabumon recolor after seeing the last one wasn't named gabumon or anything and see an option is "blackgabumon" they would freak the fuck out.
When I saw kiwimon and dinohumon I just happily said there names out loud because I just love those fella. Dinohumon was my main boy in digimon world 3 and kiwimon pummel peck is just silly they don't pummel you with their beak just just shoot babies at you lol
the reason why his call Sephiroth is because look at his body. that is basically the map of the world tree/tree of life (and i believe Sephiroth in ff7 do have relation to that thing). even the time lord in yugioh use the same theme.
I rewatched some of season 1 of Digimon and it's shocking how much occult/religious/paranormal/esoteric references there are in it. Even more than Pokemon.
tuh be FAIR. most of the recolor mons were from Digimon World 1 where they wanted distinct digimon, but didn't have space on the cd for more 3d models, so they reused models and changed textures
Honestly the Garurumon copy+paste is even worse. I think it was Digimon World 2 where they had both of them running around. Took me so long to notice the slight differences, and their names being so similar doesn't help.
I have no idea why the fake names for Sephirotmon are Clouds, nothing about it is Cloud-like even by ridiculous digimon name standards Also it's called that cause it's shaped like the Tree of Sephirot from Jewish Mysticism.
They were clouds because of Final Fantasy 7's characters, Cloud and Sephiroth. Tyler designed the question to make it seem like Sephirothmon was the reference name so it would throw Nico and Kyle off
I'm a pokemon fan and I never had a problem with digimon names,I did grow up watching both after all and I love both equally these pokemon fans give us other pokemon fans a bad name,I consider them anime haters
5:31 "because why". simple, because its literaly designed the sephiroth. if you google sephiroth tree, you will find lots of images of this, but with less... eyes...
Wikimon has pyschemon evolving form Tuno/Tsunomon, like Gabumon does. Psychemon is also distinct from the blackgabumon variant as well. However, the rest of Psychemon's evolution line is different.
Haven’t seen any Digimon material since like high school and got them all right. My memories were being activated watching this There are definitely naming conventions Digimon goes by that helps but if you have no idea about the naming conventions then it’s really a shot in the dark. I don’t know a lot of Pokémon post gen 4 or 5 BUT i know enough about how they like to name them where given multiple choice I think I’d get a good amount right
1) I'd accept 3 of those, but to avoid pronunciation overlap, I'll guess D. / So they didn't mind tongue twisters with Agumon, or did he only show up later? 2) Oh, all of these sound familiar, but all I remember was discussing whether you were answering the question as also a cosmic horror entity. I'll be led astray by hearing this term everywhere without knowing what it means, but D. / Okay, good, but seriously, what does that mean? 3) It looks the most like A, which means it's B. / There is logic, and there is Digimon logic, be afraid when you start understanding the latter. 4) C would make sense, but the best answer sounds like A, which again, means they probably made it B. / The ONE time-! 5) I'll actually take the simple option and say A, because the others sound too much like jokes. / I can't actually be mad at this one. Bonus) THIS one is Spikemon, right? No? None of these names work, but D sounds interesting. / Your worst inhibitions tend to PSYCH you out in the end…(I know…You know…I know…)
I don't get the hate on alternate-colored themed monsters. Bakemon with a hat, is funny. XD Pokemon has *shinies,* which don't do jack. At least the alternate-colored monsters like in Digimon and Yo-Kai Watch have different elements/abilities, usually, so if you like a design of a certain mon, you could usually end up with more then one in your team if you REALLY want to. The only one I don't recall if it does anything, is Monster Rancher, as certain base-forms of monsters can have different skins of other kinds of monsters... =/
Psychemon can go to Garurumon. Digimon Wiki is very broken at times. The real line is Psychemon -> Gururumon -> WereGarurumon/Black WereGarurumon -> you get the damn jist. Another line would be to Astamon. This means Psychemon or Phascomon -> Porcupamon -> Astamon Most of them might not know about slide evo, or sub species forms well. YES digimon has game related digimon. Just like Snow Agumon is one of them. It's not really bad that the alt colors are just deferent species. I mean psychemon is named that due to it's Psychedelics coloration. It's attacks even reflect it of it's special attacks. Also for Porcupamon. It's a digimon that ran to the dark world it's wearing a suit to cover over it's body. we not seen whats under it though. It's related to the line of Puppets like Monzaemon. Porcupamon is in direct line relation to one of the 7 Demon Lords. THERE is other Demon Lords I WILL state other than the 7 that represent Sins. Malomyotismon is one. No VenomMyotismon is NOT he is a Devil Undead Beast. GranDracmon is also one of the Demon Lords. It's a fairly largeish group of Lords that strong enough to rule a section of Dark World. I think some of this would make sense if you realize digimon are, Semi Intelligent to hyper intelligent data beings that take shape based on the internet/servers through the crosslines of even multiple realm spaces leaking into eachother. ...Don't help they suck at naming as much as YGO sometimes. En or Japanese. Now where is my recolor of Piyo/Biyomon that is fucking green with red feather stripes ahahahah.
17:07 my dude... magneton, dugtrio, mexican ratata, gentleman weezing ,dunsparce's "evolution" the new robot pokemon with lame ass names from violet....
Yeah, it didn't sit right with me when he said that. Especially when you consider how crazy Pokémon fans go over "shiny" versions, which are just literal recolors of the same Pokémon.
