Polestar 2 2024 review: So much better now!

This feels more like an all-new model rather than a facelift.
The Polestar 2 has seen so much change for this Model Year 2024 update, with a significant shift to rear-wheel drive instead of front-wheel drive (and as we all know, in the battle of RWD vs FWD, the winner is ALWAYS RWD).
There's still dual-motor all-wheel drive as well, and there are a bunch of new standard items fitted including some safety spec, which is great to see.
It still has a few carryover quirks and issues, but this finally feels like a real rival to the likes of the Tesla Model 3, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 6 (and Ioniq 5) and plenty more. And most importantly? It lives up to what Polestar was supposed to be from the start - fun. And fast.
James Pumphrey said it -- mo powa baby! And this thing delivers.

I own a Polestar dual motor MY23. Fantastic car. IMO looks better than the new one. While the MY24 single motor version is an improvement over the previous one, any improvement in the dual motor one is less noticeable IMO. I am averaging around 17kWH/100Km so the 'improved' efficiency is not actually improved that much in the new car ... the existing car is pretty good. The extra driving range on the new one would be welcome though.
@mshackleton1
@mshackleton1 9 месяцев назад
I test drove both and felt the single motor was a great choice. Unless you drive a lot of icy, or unsealed roads AWD isn't necessary. And the 0-100 times, I felt that means more in an ICE. In an EV where the torque is there from the start, a 6 second car is plenty.

The issue is not the vehicle, the issue is your home grid and fast charging experience. Matt you should also tell people that they will need to upgrade their home power system, minimum 30AMP cirtut switch, cables and charge point to get 7.2KW home charging as 10AMP 2.4KW charging is all but useless. If you want 3phase you will need a 50 cirtut switch and also my underatanding is that some places will require you to register that with the electeic company that your a business a customer (higher peak/off peak charges). You will also have to tell your home insurance company that you have upgraded to 3phase power and that you have an lithium ION battery equipped car of you don't and something happens Insurance Companies will deny insurance claim (it's starting to happen). Then there is fast charging issues, at the moment it stinks, I was at a service station the other day and saw petrol pumps covered while the EV ones were out in the open and it was raining heavily and the EV guys were quite angry they had to do there recharging in the rain. As for the car? Lovely if stupidity expensive. At this stage EV are not worth it.

10 Amp isn't that useless - I drove around the north island of NZ for a week and used 10A sockets almost exclusively overnight at the places I was staying. I only used a public charging station once in the middle of a longer trip. If you do 50 km a day, you can put that back into the battery with the portable charger on a 10A socket in about 4 or 5 hours. You just have to plug the car in whenever you are home rather than waiting for the battery to get down to 10 % like you do with a fuel tank.

Thanks for mentioning the battery module replacement, Matt. With cars like the new Tesla and their battery integrated into the chassis, I wonder what happens if you get a bad module? Car is a write off?
@mshackleton1
@mshackleton1 10 месяцев назад
The battery pack isn't integrated into the chassis - it still is a removeable item. The difference is that once it's bolted into the chassis, it becomes part of the structure of the car, rather than being a dead weight the car has to carry around and the rest of the chassis has to compensate for.

If you want the prices of your cars to increase because of the potential long-term benefits of owners (that may or may not be you!) then it makes sense.
@mshackleton1
@mshackleton1 10 месяцев назад
There is a consumer law here where a manufacturer has to warrant your purchased item for what would be considered a reasonable length of time for the product, even if the warranty is stated to be less than that. 5 years without significant mechanical issues is what you should get from a modern car. Under the same consumer law I had a panel replaced on my LG OLED TV out of its 12 month warranty (at 18 months).

the PS2 is on my short list of new cars to buy. I did once rent a Model3, and while I loved the car, I really do not like the owner of the company, so will not be putting any money into his pockets. Not that Geely is probably any better, but they are not in the news constantly spouting off. I also refuse to own "boring" cars, even if I do find the Polestars come in very boring colours. If I buy one, getting it wrapped will be one of the first things I do.I think it would look great in red.

My problem with this and the Tesla long range models is the battery chemistry. The batteries are best run between 20-80%. The base Model 3 and Y are LFP and after happy to do 0-100% so they actually offer about the same usable range. I.e. I'd still prefer a base Model Y for $68k with an LFP battery.
@therightcar
@therightcar 10 месяцев назад
Points well made.
@mshackleton1
@mshackleton1 10 месяцев назад
If you always put your car on charge each night the 80% limit isn't an issue. And if you need to go on a long road trip, occasionally charging to 100% to get the range you need isn't going to damage the battery, especially if you're using a home charging setup. The public high speed chargers all tail off on the charge rate pretty dramatically once you reach 80%, so the times you fully charge it up become a rarity. If you consistently drive the full range of the battery in a day then a LFP battery vehicle is probably the better choice.
@farodopi5170
@farodopi5170 9 месяцев назад
this is very misleading by Tesla actually. A LFP battery is a lithium battery as well as such doesn’t like full discharge or full charge. It’s the lithium the problem. And a LFP stays a lithium battery. The only reason Tesla advertise this is because otherwise it would impact the ability of the car to give a very accurate SoC %. so be very carful with that statements from them. You can ready online many scientific articles about LFP. The usual advantages are longer lifespan and number of charging cycles, safer, more able run under high temperatures… Not being able to fully charge and discharge them which will result in battery degradation as with every lithium battery. Besides, this 0-100% solves a not existing problem since you surely don’t daily need to use a 0 to 100% the battery. It’s just marketing BS. I wouldn’t use this as a purchasing argument IMHO. i run my P2 between 10 and 90% (for daily usage) as recommended by Polestar and i have absolutely no problem doing that.

You haven’t given much comparison against rivals to answer the question you are asking. Range on paper is all good and well, but why don’t you do side by sides with other brands and also charge time, and your experience using chargers on the road compared to say a Tesla with the supercharger network, does not being a Tesla hinder charging ability in that regards?
