Any idea where a Polestar 2 can be bought for a reasonable price in Finland? I currently live in Oulu and would like to buy one. Can't find one here and would have to pay 30% in tax to bring one from Norway :(

Matrix LED is a game changer. I have it on my new Audi and it's a feature I wanted since long before it existed. Strong full beam alone is rarely useful for me since I can only use it for short duration but having great lighting while passing oncoming cars is wonderful.

Can’t talk for others, but I for one like these videos. Headlights are important and it’s really interesting seeing the state of the art from various manufacturers. Would definitely be interesting watching some side-by-side comparisons as well (and yes, I know that’s difficult in terms of getting good footage).

You can use another car (maybe yours), either parked by the side of the road with lights on or driving (with someone assisting) and then record a drive-by video of the tested car with high beam on from the other car's perspective. It should give the viewers a reasonable idea of how the adaptive high beam works.

I enjoy these videos. Lights are very important. Once you’ve had a car with very good lights, you can’t go back, I have had nice cars as rentals which, after driving them at night, I would never consider buying. When doing test drives, I insist borrowing them overnight. If that is not possible, I’m the guy booking the absolute latest time slot even if there are earlier openings. I’ll be shopping for a new EV next year, so this is super informative. In other words, keep it up Björn.

Wauw I love these headlight tests. I know it’s not matrix led but could you do a similar test on your model 3 ? Such a shame Tesla don’t do more into making superior headlights.
@KaneTheMessiah
@KaneTheMessiah 3 года назад
@@Fekillix To be fair, those does not look like matrix LED. Matrix LED requires a projector like housing since it contains all the LEDs in an array. Those on the tesla are seperated and there is probably 1 LED per reflector similar to the headlamps Volvo are using today. Also, Matrix LED are not allowed in North America so might be the reason they're not developing.
@KaneTheMessiah
@KaneTheMessiah 3 года назад
@@Fekillix This is true when I look it up! Why would you use left side image as before?! Don't do that... Anyway, I think (last time I read it) more than 50% of all Tesla sales were in the US alone and Matrix Headlight has not been a huge selling point and more just of a gimmick until recently so they've saved quite a few bucks per car only having one type of headlamp but hopefully Tesla might be the stepping stone in changing the regulations in the US.
@jobathano1660
@jobathano1660 3 года назад
@@KaneTheMessiah There are different ways to do it, it really depends on the resolution of the areas you like want to grey out. Many newer systems uses a projector with a multiple leds inside it. The matrix system in the regular Volvo’s now uses different reflectors, some turning reflectors and then like a final stage when it’s clear.
@KaneTheMessiah
@KaneTheMessiah 3 года назад
@@jobathano1660 The projectors with multiple LEDs are the ones called MATRIX LED and Volvo does not have any MATRIX LED modules today. The Volvos of today are using system called "Active High Beam" which uses a mechanical system by bending the modules and the switches to low beam and when it's clear it turns on the High Beam again. LED Matrix does not need to utilize any mechanical system and works by controlling individual or group of addressable and controllable LEDs turning them off not to glare coming traffic. However, you could say that Volvos first car with MATRIX LED is the Polestar 2 that used 84 LEDs in one module so a total of 168 LEDs with both LHS and RHS and I'm pretty sure this technology will trickle down to upcoming Volvos! MATRIX LEDs has been used in the automotive business for almost a decade now and the first being the Audi A8 in 2013 which had 25 LEDs in each headlamp although it had 25 LEDs they were grouped up by 5 LEDs per reflector. Today it is becoming more commercially viable for other brands that aren't in the premium segment. The future of headlamps will be consisting of laser light together with DLP modules, also called Pixel Lighting. However, only a handful of cars are using DLP and are all in the premium segment such as Audi E-TRON, Q8 and the new Mercedes S-class amongst a few others. DLP is actually quite an old technology and was invented in the 80s if I remember correctly but has recently begun to being used in the automotive business and today only Texas Instruments are creating chipsets with DLP techonology for the automotive business. The DLP can utilize from all from 800.000 up to 2 million micro mirrors on a small chip which are all individually controllable and will be rotating on and tiny tiny axis to reflect the light outwards or in to a blocker which gives a much higher resulotion while only being lit up by 1 to 2 LEDS.

I think it's great to have these kind of videos and I'm actually surprised they are not more common. I guess not many reviewers take the time to do this, at night.. But it's important to know the difference since this is generally an expensive option and many potential clients won't have the chance to test this within a drive test. Also it wood be cool to see how different manufacturers implement it and how the tech evolves with time.

Lights on cars now are so good. Another good factor that helps is the actual quality of the road. A road built well with good markings and reflectors will help when your lights are on as it will give you the best chance at maximum visibility. Poor roads will hinder you

I assume this Polestar is using the same lighting system as a Volvo. My Volvo V90 has to completely stop for the high beams to be turned off. If you just crawl along in darkness the high beams turn on. The cornering light feature is optional on Volvos. It looks like they are making it standard on the Polestars. This is good, as a Volvo with the full suite of features is great to drive at night. I use the automated lighting 100% of the time.

From my experience of having matrix lights on my VW Arteon, they only operate above a specific speed. So when you are saying they are a bit slow to come on as you come out of a speed restriction, this could be because you are not going quick enough.

That is cool as hell...especially seeing them in action like that. I hope the U.S. updates their requirement for vehicles to have a designated, separate high beam/low beam. It's a REALLY old and archaic road law that was implemented way (WAY) back when vehicles had CANDLES (...well, ALMOST had candles) in reflective housings on the front bumper to light the road ahead for the driver... The headlight technology we've had for the past several years are just about literally LIGHT-YEARS ahead of halogen lighting: H.I.D.'s, L.E.D.'s,...frikin' LASER's... All these different lighting systems that are SO much more efficient, SO much brighter, and SO much smarter than yester-year's automotive lighting, and it seems like The States are years behind in being able to legally take advantage of these safer, better headlight systems...

Once you have experienced LED matrix headlights, you can never go back. The brightness and coverage is second to none. It's as if we had been driving with flashlight until now. It make HID look like old tech. They are so responsive, you can keep the high beams on all the time and they automatically change to avoid blinding incoming cars and the cars in front of you. The ability to turn with the steering is a huge plus when driving in mountain roads at night. They are like night and day, I will never go back to anything less. Tesla, VW has had these for the last 5-6 years, where are yours?

The beam shape is very well controlled, see the tree tops...or more precisely, you DON'T see them, which is very good for the other traffic. Much better that the Lazer panel. Also the turning action is nice, but the beam width and length do not seem that impressive. False change to low beam is BTDT with these intelligent lights. The same thing on my car too.

When I watched the ID3 video I thought it looked like it might be annoying to use at time because it looked like they jittered and to me this looked more steady and also faster to react. My only RL experience with matrix light is from a taxi ride in a Skoda Superb a couple of years ago, and both this and the ID3 seem wastly improved. So nice in the Scandinavian winter with light like this!

The Volvo/Polestar system is great indeed, better than the basic VW group one. I think the more expensive Audi Matrix LED system still beats them out. Sign detection is an interesting one. Higher-end Audis will see that it's a sign and will slightly dim that cell so the reflection doesn't bother you too much, instead of fully turning the cell off.

What I don't understand is that these types of sophisticated headlights are only on very expensive cars. And usually the owners of these cars don't care if they blind other drivers!!...
