This is an australian abalone shell, very difficult to clean, today I will try to wash and polish it, when it is polished, it is as beautiful as stained glass, it is incredible.

Word to the wise. The dust created from sanding Abalone shell is extremely toxic if inhaled. The pores of your skin can absorb the toxins from the dust making you extremely sick as well. Proper ventilation and respirator are most definitely required and recommended.

Correction: Abalone dust IS NOT TOXIC, it's the calcium carbonate (crystalline) that is the irritant, again NOT TOXIC... Wow many of you are just plain stupid.

The shell came out beautiful! It's so smooth and shiny! I've never seen anyone polish an abalone shell before.
@bpharaoh2884
@bpharaoh2884 2 года назад
There is a reason you have not seen anyone do this before. That is because it is highly, highly, highly toxic and dangerous, not only to breathe that particulate matter, but also for it to be absorbed through your skin. It is a grave mistake for this individual to post this video like it is a simple DIY project without posting a single warning!

@@bpharaoh2884 dramatic much? Sea shells are calcium carbonate. He probably dissolved it with acetic acid - that's vinegar. He really didn't polish the shell, he dissolved all the calcium carbonate and is left with just the nacre (the shiny stuff you see on the inside only if the shell is intact)
@bpharaoh2884
@bpharaoh2884 2 года назад
Well professor, I can guarantee you that fermented juice will not dissolve the shell material above the mother of pearl. I also watched him use abrasives to get off whatever was left after he bathed it in whatever nondescript acid he used. My concern is that he did not describe any necessary precautions, PPE or products he employed in the process, but don’t let experience or common sense stand in your way, knock yourself out and have a go at it, and please don’t let me know how it turns out or try to inform others with ignorance if you can help it. ✌️

Video needs a warning, careless handling of acid (that ate the crome in their sink), I really hope they wore proper PPE when sanding. The shell turned out beautiful but beauty isn't worth the health danger of improper handling of acid and inhaling shell dust that is toxic.

Shelfish can bioaccumulate lead and mercury from their environment and deposit it in their shells to keep it out of their biogically sensitive parts. Hence the warning below may be valid, depending on the local pollutants.
