Nothing more therapeutic than sitting listening to music and porting . It's crazy how I hate starting the procedure, but once I'm done, I feel 100X better. Thank you for sharing knowledge it's much appreciated. GOD BLESS.
I have to say my hat's off to you with your no nonsense to the point approach explaining what your doing and why , thanks for sharing your knowledge with the guys on RU-vid to help someone who doesn't maybe understand improving performance, great job 👍
Pete great video, a buddy i use to work with , his dad owned a race engine build shop in Winnipeg called Ken's Kustom Auto and i drive old Volvo 240's, nothing exciting to you i know, i needed so head work done , i blew a head gasket, so i talked to him and just by chance he did all the warranty head work for Porsche,Audi,BMW,Volvo and Mercedes, so he was good, he took the head from my Volvo to completely redo everything on it, it had just under 130k miles on it, everything new went into it, asked if i wanted the head ports cleaned up, i said sure, he had to plane just under 2 thosounds off it, i got lucky, then asked for my intake manifold and polished it up the size between the manifold and intake port of the head were already really close, so he did that and asked if i wanted to upgrade my valve springs, i said sure and asked what is the gain, he told me right around 700 rpms at the top end, awesome, and we stuck a camshaft from the European Volvo , the sister car to mine, was like 25 to 30 hp more, i said yes, we got it all put back together which i did with his son and i was very surprised how much more freely it revved to stock, i did a break of 500 miles changed the oil checked the valve clearance only had to adjust it by 2-3 thousand, I can say it put a smile on my face , it was allot more lively from 3200 to 6900 rpms, in all i owed him for the work with parts/tax a bit under 1900.00 bucks and that included all the gaskets to, this was 2002/2003, it use to lay a 3 foot strip after this it did almost 9 feet, yes 40 and still felt like a kid,LOL, a i did need a new clutch in May of that year, these things had valves the size of a SBC to my surprise 👍
Hey Pete Port matching is definitely free horsepower but it takes work. Do you prefer polished intake runners or leave them alone. You are the man Pete you probably forgotten more than most will know LOL
When I ported a chinese manifold I hit some large fissures in the casting and they outgassed when we breached them with the die grinder. One smelled like soy sauce, one smelled like burnt skin, one smelled unique.....
Pete you rock brother. I came to the states a while ago and had the privilege to help build some off shore speed boats n nostalgia top fuel stuff. Was amazing. My heart broke when I had to leave. I now live vicariously thru you! Lol. Will make it back one day if it's the last thing I do!!
I love watching you make magic with a flex shaft . I used one of these for several years doing jewelry . I can't imagine moving the amount of material as you do. Looks great ,very impressive.
i port matched and did some porting on my 2.8L 89 camaro intake and heads when i rebuilt it. amazing difference, pulled way past redline and beat other v8 camaro's. my friend back in the 90's loved porting heads, same guy that would say he was "polishing turds" building cars back to stock with the wildest motor he could afford to build with hand me down parts and hours of porting. my porting friend was a long hair into rock, if he wasnt wrenching he was in his room on the bass. this channel takes me right back haha thanks
Love it Pete... Keep on exposing how much butchery is really out there... It takes Benjamin's to go fast .. You rock on all facets.. Hell yeah brother!!!
Pete what was the liquid you were squirting in the ports. Was that just water to cool the cutter ? I modify mainly small 2 stroke nitro engines and occasionally I have Aluminium stuck to my cutters.
That's something you can practice on a weed eater first too. Srsly, get a feel of cutting aluminum compared to steel and whatnot. Then when you screw up you're only out $20 for a used weedeater instead of having to call Pete, heh heh.
Swap out that solid carbide endmill for Ingersoll 1TJ1F-12077S9R01 It’s a hell of a lot cheaper to swap out inserts Vs buying solid carbide You’re welcome
Very IMPRESSED. More impressed with the music because I cant carry a tune in a 55 gallon drum. LOL.. Well done brother, WELL DONE! I port and like you said, in my early years. Mine gets the job done and I can live with that. MOTO,, If you want improvement porting, Become a MOLICULE of air. Make that path easier and you will go places.
This is what i refer to as Sleeper mods you can't see them and have some of the Largest gains.. About to Port Match a set of A-Team China Heads AKA Vortec Clones for my 337 with Performer RPM Intake as i Pull With my Fishing Truck 84 S10 SportXt Cab Short..
Mediocrity Cured via real engine building and sweat equity of doing your own port matching/optimization is what this series is 👍👊🇺🇸🤘 Also, love some 80s rock synth. Made me think of my first concert at 14 yo - Honeymoon Suite touring their release The Big Prize 😂
If someone had told me 20 years ago V8 performance intakes would be coming from China I would have laughed at them. It took an AMERICAN to make this one right though! Good stuff, Pete! And, awesome tunes as always.
So im a complete idiot and have been bitten by a vintage Mercedes bug. My drift car has a m117 v8 that is know to be reliable (been beating on the stock 4.5 for 7 years) but has a terrible lower intake/plenum. Im putting a 5.6 ltr version(better heads and improved but same design intake) in it and ive ported the upper intake. Do you think .125 aluminum is thick enough to build the lower plenum? Its sorta ford v10 ish with the runners looping up and down to the lower plenum in the v. Its no power house but on dynos they fall off sharply after 5500 and my 4.5 carries to 6200. I want that with the increased power.
I built up a LA360 years ago stock bottom end I match the weights for each of the rods and pistons so it was better balanced the heads i put 202 valves in intake side ported them just cleaned everything up mainly and made the ports match the gaskets intake and exhaust side and header . M1 Mopar intake match ported that too 750 DP it was 8.5 to 1 stock but I did plane the heads and block to clean them up so might of been 9.5 in the end I also put a Mopar Purple Camshaft in it too about 500 lift i cant remember what part number it was now to long ago . but everyone said it wouldn't run any good but man did it pull hard it made 425 hp from memory . i have seen so guys just buy parts and pull them together but not do anything to make the parts work together . but a little port matching and a little blending and clean up on stock parts will wakeup a stock engine if you have a few basic tools
What kind of liquid are you using in your bottle there for milling the intake manifold out? I can say I'm definitely with you I'm from the class of old school too where we actually had to do work to make our power out of our small block 350s building my first 4-cylinder was a 22R Toyota engine that truck their freaking ripped for a 4 cylinder how is drag racing 5-liter mustangs with a little bit of nitrous on it.. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Pro Comp used to make decent intakes. But, about 10 years their casting quality went into the toilet. To the point of seeing porous areas and obvious repairs. If the intake had the front water jacket sharing the wall with the #1 intake runner, there was a good chance you would fill the cylinder and oil pan with water.
Pay for this to be done by guys like this. Unless you have hours of free time at a track after you have unlimited access to a dyno, you can really do more harm than good. Like just get in there and remove all the curves and go racing. Full throttle, oh boy, she's loud. Yep, you're gonna win races......then you learn you lost a half second on you run , or 6/10ths off your lap. Now you're chasing your tail on what happened and full throttle felt good. Nuckle head, full throttle always feels better than idle. 😂😂😂😂
Between watching you massage the intake and playing the guitar, it kicked off some carpal tunnel sympathy pains. I spent a lot of time over the years with Dumore grinders repairing/polishing plastic injection molds for work and doing some occasional port matching for my need for speed. I can't really say i miss it, LOL!
🎉🎉❤ IT SOME PEOPLE DON'T HAVE MONEY FOR MBE STUFF, BUT ( 8 ) hrs AND A BIT OF POLISHING A TURD FOR THE POOR GUY WILL MAKE HIM A LITTLE MORE COMPETITIVE 🎉🎉
I know when I found out about porting stuff I ripped the top end of my daily driver and went to town gasket matching the ports and that was all cast iron. I think I spent a ton of time porting the cast iron heads LOL!
Another great episode! Yeah hogging out all of that aluminum is a tedious job. But, it gets results! Nice job on that work too. “I can’t wait” to see how much power you gain.
This answered one hell of a question I had, I have this same intake and im a fab guy not a motor guy but I didnt want my intake elbow sticking out my hood so I milled the carb flange off my intake down 1.25" and make a sheet metal elbow I welded onto the intake to keep it lower. Before I did I cut those webs back identical to how you did those and was curious if it would hurt or help. Its just a 370 cube sbc with a big single turbo. Awesome video pete! And as always. China sucks.
I can't quite figure the drumming out. The beats are advanced. In some cases quite advanced. But the timing is off a bit some times. Are you playing the drums as well Pete? When I say off, I am not being negative, just pointing it out since the beats are nuts, it's weird to hear that at the same time as bad timekeeping. Just an old drummer watching an old do every stinking thing under the sun guy polish turds. :)
Pete, i don't know if you have or have used a flow bench, but either way im sure you have a answer, when you cut back the runner edges, Im curious on your reason as to why you round the front edge vs knife edging. Does it help promote airflow? Does FI vs NA change the reasoning?
You are awesome sir really respect all the hard work you put into this. It’s really enjoyable to watch a professional and you’re really good at explaining things. I appreciate it. I may never build an engine like that but it sure is cool to watch. Thank you for all the hard work you do, really appreciate it. Thank you, sir.
I’m sorry but, it’s hard to imagine you not being real good, and just pretty good at doin’ stuff. My Dad always says, “you either got it, or you suck”.
I hate modern times port work, especially for boosted engines. A blower will not push past your shit ports. All your blower is doing is changing the density of the intake air, but it still flows the same as N/A..
Great content. I have thought about doing some more port work to my Sullivan intake on my 4.6 mod motor. I did the gasket matching but feel like after watching the video I need to do more on my plenum volume. Love the channel Pete keep on killing it my friend 💪
I had no idea that when I was voting for the new theme song that Pete actually wrote and played that shit on his guitar! It's so cool to watch you play in the inset picture. I am impressed Pete!! Keep up the good work and I'll keep watching lol
