Benjamin was rescued from auction, and he developed the biggest abscess anyone at our shelter has ever seen on his neck. In this stomach-churning video, Dr Nancy relieves his abscess and treats him medically.
He stood for that very well, almost like he knows you're trying to help him. I hope he heals up and makes a full recovery because he seems like a total sweetheart.
A skill you learn is to breath through your mouth on those cases because the smell of muscle tissue or any tissue that has rotted is. . . . something you never forget. It's not the animal behavior, but the smell that triggers a human to not come into contact with it for our survival.
Abscess can stink and I mean stink (think of the worse smell you've ever smelt and some abscess can be worse, especially if it's a bacterial infection in there), think worst one I ever assisted in was a infected anal glad abscess (I was a vet nurse and it literally had us gagging and normally me and another nurse used to fight as to who got to clean out abscess etc as we were both huge popaholics but this one was really really bad).
@@emily.letsendbslintheuk554 I mean when you have tissue that is necrotic in the abscess that has not been drained, it is in a location that is likely to be exposed to bacteria (anus or animals who walk in mud, swamps, unclean areas, etc) or is in an area or on a gland that already produces an unwanted smell (depending on the animal this can be many from preening glands to scent glands on ferrets and more to dog anal glands listed above) an abscess can smell like actual death as it's necrotic tissue from some abscesses to being easily infected with very strong smelling purulent fluid, kinda fluidish? "stuff" that comes out. Infected scent glands or glands. . . .if you didn't like the smell before hospitals have not been able to get the smell out and closed an operating room for two days because the smell was that bad even after the room was scrubbed down. It just stayed in the air and went down the hallway. This is when that tub of vicks, a vicks inhale stick, or pure peppermint oil is how you get through a procedure.
Oh how I love "horse plus vets" and love love love Dr. Nancy ❤. Poor little Benjamin has to feel so much better, finally having that abscess lanced, and getting all that nasty puss out of there. He is by far the sweetest little donkey y'all have ever had at HPHS. Again, great job 👍 Dr. Nancy and Kimberly. I don't think Ive ever heard Kimberly say the word "disgusting" sooo many times in one episode 🤣 I bet she said it at least 20-30 times 🤣!! Praying 🙏 little Benjamin makes a speedy recovery. He is so precious, I wish I could adopt him, but 1( Im old, 2( I live in AZ, and 3( I live in a senior community 😢. Otherwise I would!! Love and Blessings to all at HPHS ❤️🙌 Jennifer
I’ve never seen a vet open up such a big hole especially not shaving all that natty hair around the wound first. I know that everyone has opinions but it’s just seems like the bigger the open area the bigger risk for it to get infected. With tons of farm animals our vet just opens up the abscess at the bottom drains it and rinses it several times and then puts meds inside the area and injection of antibiotics but always shaves the hair first ! We rinse the wound out a couple days but they heal up quickly!
@@lisabarrett219 the biggest problem I see is not shaving the hair around the wound. Big clumps of hair are just falling in there, introducing bacteria. It’s just a very strange way to treat a wound all around.
Poor little darling! Jeez it must have stunk badly. He is is the best of hands now. With your tender love and care, I'm sure he will grow into a healthy and happy wee fella in no time. He is a real cutie and has just as much right to a decent life as any of us. I thank you Doc Nancy for all you are doing for him. He will look a lot different in a couple of weeks and will feel so much better. 🐎💕
I’m so glad the problem declared itself, love how Dr and Kieth are the only ones not grossed out by the smell, they clearly have seen/smelt it all before
You know, I grew up around horses all throughout my childhood and our family knew several old-timey horse traders and cattle ranchers, yet I never heard of that corn starch trick before. It's ingenious. Thank you for teaching an old dog a new trick!
I know that cornstarch is difficult for some creatures to grip on if they're usually able to climb vertical surfaces (insects, reptiles, etc), so I'd that's part of why it keeps flies from laying eggs! Hard to land on and sit for the necessary time. What a neat double duty trick.
I always felt there was 'something' about vets. The cry of triumph when that abscess started to exude, that joy is always a 'vet' sound. This weekend it will clear up.
This is such a real shame! Previous owners allowed this poor donkey to suffer in this way. Please show progress Dr N, Keith and Kimberly make with this sick little guy. Thank you for sharing. 🐴
Oh bless his little heart, he must have known you were helping him, he stood quietly for all that treatment. He must feel so much better. All that infection must have been making him feel so so sick. I'm looking forward to watching his recovery. ❤ Thank you Dr Nancy for helping this beautiful boy. 🙏🏻
Dr. Nancy, you are The Best! I love how you show affection to your animal patients, even feeding and watering them - all while talking sweetly to them. You are special! 🤠💯💢💥
I love horses & and donkeys. He sure is a sweet natured fella. I hope he will be loved & cared for throughout the remainder of his life. And i hope he heals 110%.
Awe bless lil Benjamin!!! 🥰Thank you Dr Nancy for how kind and caring you are to these poor babies!!! 🤗 I have horses, so thank you so much for the cornstarch trick!
What an exceptional animal. Stood there and gave you absolutely no problem the entire time....I know the relief was great. Thanks for fixing this guy up. Watch his character completely change. Hes going to be running around with a happy fun attitude before long.
I just love little Benjamin!❤ He has got to be one of the sweetest donkeys ever! Wish I could just take him and give him all of the loving care he should have! Y’all do such amazing work, I hope all of you are blessed with goodness in your lives! ❤
Oh poor lil Benjamin. .he is such a sweet boy ..I remember when they got him at auction that he was sooo weak even walking to the transport did him in. . He was in with the other donkeys and they can be a bit territorial and he is such a lil guy...so as the brilliant Dr Nancy says its probably from a bite but they've been watching him closely ... I'm positive under Dr Nancy's care he will get better..but definitely needs to put on weight..just shows you how bad he is when she couldn't find a muscle to put the injections in...I've seen a lot of abscesses broken over the yrs but that was the most I've seen come out..including dead muscle...!!!! This lil fella needs some good luck for a change..shame they can't keep him as a mascot along with Cowboy the pony..hope we get lots of updates on this special boy.. what a fighter he is. Donkeys are hardy but this one is super hard..no flinching throughout all of that and he wasn't sedated...whoever adopts Benjamin will have one VERY SPECIAL DONKEY....🇬🇧💞✝️🙏👍👏👍👏🐴🇺🇸
I like watching the vet procedures & Dr Nancy explaining everything but the procedure on Benjamin is making me retch. Just so glad it's being sorted Penny GB
Wow, that darling little donkey took it well - disinfectant stings like hell. Hope we get to see him healthy and homed! Thanks for looking after him and saving him
Thsnk you for saving this little donkey!! Your a really Great Doctor. You guys are amazing 😂 and that Little Benjamin is so sweet and cute, he stood there like a real Prince!! Love you Benjamin 🫏🩵🫏🩵🫏🩵🫏🩵🫏🩵🫏
Thank goodness, we do not have smelly vision. And poor Benjamin you know he has to feel somewhat better. I got a feeling it’s gonna leave a big hole but he’ll get well for Benjamin. He’s gotta feel like crap but the vet is gonna fix you up.
I can handle draining stinky abcesses, but castrations make me cringe! I worked at a horse hospital, so I always got nominated to assist the Vets. I was happy to help! Glad you were able to help this little boy.
This was the first video I saw from this channel and I have to say I am HOOKED!! I love how you don't just do a pop the bump and cut the video, you actually talk about treatment and check in the next day or so. Just the best video. And what a good little guy!!
