Pop Up to Micro Cabin: Our DIY Adventure

Happy Camper

About a year ago, we were gifted a pop up to use on our property in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. With heavy snow, oodles of rain, and little critters claiming residence, this camper was doomed for a slow northern death. With a simple design plan, some imagination, and a whole lot of winging it, my husband and I managed to create a cute little cabin to enjoy! We’re not architects, builders, or designers...just dreamers with grit.
Next trip...Outside awning, inside walls and ceiling, lights, shelving, curtains, etc.

Yes I do like the idea, however I can’t help but wonder about weight limit for the bottom of the camper. Originally had an aluminum frame holding up canvas, now lots of heavy wood with panels added to it.

Laurie Mashek Previous walls, while still not as heavy, were solid. The roof held a very heavy AC unit too. Hoping the new build (and the fact it’s not going to travel) will hold up fine. We’ll see. 😁

I'm doing a new build on a 4 x 8 trailer but mine will have multi-purposes from hauling my golf cart and other things as well as a camper with fold down beds, a bed area slide out, tables, etc. and the roof will be a pop top but with hardboard and poor man's fibergalass so I can lift it with my bad shoulders.It will also have a drop down deck that will be used as a shower room.

Just my opinion, I have done 3 of these and if you use the original roof it has steel poles in every corner. I jack it up and framed in between the corner poles. I also used 2x3s and saved a ton of weight. Plus all that lumber on the roof could make that very top heavy.

Our Family Camper since the late 90s has reached its end, It's a 8/10 Family: I was looking into doing something of this nature to pull up to Grandpas\Dads\Now My Property in Tustin until I can figure out what to build on the small property which had a single wide trailer since the '60s: its been vacant property for a while now.

How great is that! Know that we towed this pop up to our property, rebuilt it into a cabin and it hasn’t been towed since. We wouldn’t have it on the road, but it has certainly made for an amazing getaway cabin for about 5 yrs so far. Still as sound and sturdy as the day we built it. Good luck with your project!!

Love the way you reused all the windows and slides uncle mike I see where I get my ingenuity from! It must have rubbed off on me a little when we were kids! Lol love the videos keep them coming! Love the DIY stuff, you both are so creative so what’s the next project after you have your little Micro camper getaway done? We could always use a few extra hands on our bus build. Looking forward to some cooler weather so we can get back to work on our build. Hint hint... lol

E J A B xO It has handled ALL sorts of weather really well. Of course, we built it extra sturdy knowing we would NOT be traveling with it. It’s now a permanent mini cabin on our property. LOTS of updates on our channel, if you’re interested in more our shenanigans. We recently milled our own shelves from a pine tree that fell. SO MUCH LEARNING!! Good luck with your repurposing project. It’s so worth it! Let us know how it goes. 😁

This is amazing. It give me inspiration and hope. I’m looking fir a camper to make into a living space, I know that closed in campers can possibly be found cheap, but I’m just not sure if I could afford one. A pop up is a cheaper rout, but I totally understand that a lot of money probably went into converting this, but I think that I can take my time doing that. I would love an estimate of the cost. From the purchase to the materials. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jennifer! Building our micro (building materials, roofing, paint, lighting, solar, bedding, and wood stove), we have roughly $3,500 invested. (The wood stove being $1,200 of it). Lots of cheap/free finds and salvaging along the way to make this possible. Please keep in touch and let us know if you decide to build! SO WORTH IT!!! ❤️

As you guys had mentioned "road worthy" before moving it thru the yard, I had thought you guys had plans to take it on the road, and I cringed. Thoughts of what that axle was rated for and a good stiff crosswind were terrifying. Then I read the comments and thankfully found out that you guys had planned for it just being on the property. Whew! I felt I dodged a bullet there cuz I drive a tractor/trailer for a living and did NOT want to share the road with that! I enjoyed it tho! I hope to do something like this with my wife and myself soon, as I'm approaching the mid-century marker. Loved how you both had so much fun, and I'm certain there were some frustrating moments edited out as well! Ha! Thanks for sharing!

I like it. I would have kept it lighter weight by reusing the old roof on a new alittle less weight frame... an found some tent canvas to redo that on the sidewalls like before halfway up to the hard fiberglass roof...
@SS-bz4ze
@SS-bz4ze 4 года назад
Zipper on... An cover wheil driving... but that would still suck if not covered right in the rain an the wind drag with a permently mounted roof would be reason for pause an consider a fold up system like was in place before..

A front wall for a wind break for driving would make it simpler..

Hello! I just bought this pop up and am wanting to do the same thing. I’m curious, did y’all reinforce the existing steel trailer parts, or just built on top of the existing one. I’m wondering how much weight I can put on this thing, I have a lot of crap lol 😂😂🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ I’ll be living in mine full time with my service dog. Great video thanks!!!

This particular pop up (Palomino) didn’t need any extra support for its frame. We have another (Coleman) that will most likely need reinforcement. It just depends. 🤷‍♀️. Please be sure to share your journey with us. Best wishes on your new adventures!!! 🥰

Thanks! We used 2x4 pine (sideways) for the structure. Sideways so we could maximize the space and have 1.5” think walls. 2x4s because we knew weight didn’t matter since we wouldn’t be traveling with it. It also needed to be sturdy enough to hold up to heavy snow loads in the winter. Four winters so far…PERFECT! (If you watch any further on our channel, you’ll see the adorable woodstove we’ve added too!) 🥰

@@happycamper1243 this is simply amazing, great work you guys 👌. Yes I'm thinking road trips.. more practical when staying on land. Would you happen to know if it's legal to drive around with the top up (if remodeled) ..would like to remove the tent. But I was told I won't be legal on the road if so? Or was that a missinfo? I have a jayco 1992.. and am dying to rip the tent out and build...but I also want to be able to go on the road without getting pulled over. Any suggestions? Thank you Will definitely check out the Woodstove video. I appreciate your reply. Have a blessed one 🌺

props to you guys on a great looking build. i wish you didnt edit the loud music in. i had to turn it down every 5 seconds then back up to hear you talk. :( oh well to each there own, shes probably overweight but if your not touring the country you'll be fine.i like the way that you used the 2x4s sideways but structurally i would think it would be wobbly but it seems actually pretty heavy duty :) very creative and inexpensive build, question : without the plywood sides giving rigidity do you think it would be strong enough to have the roof on it? why ,because to keep it lighter i would want to use my rolled 4x8 sheets of thin plastic(white) but this would add 0 strength to the sidewalls. do you believe without the plywood it would be strong still???
@happycamper1243
@happycamper1243 4 года назад
Trucking 101 sorry about the loud tunes🤪. I’ve never made a recording like this and just used a fancy ready-made template from an app I found. I’ll get better with practice. As for the build, it is super sturdy. Heavy yes, but it’s not going on the road and will be on blocks. 2x4s were perfect for the heavy snow load we get and probably didn’t even need the plywood for its support.

Incredible build. I just went and checked ou my pop up 2 weeks ago and she's been tore up. Mine is at my hunting property. Now that ive seen your video i having a difficult time deciding on building a cabin or doing something like this to my camper. Depends on price of both. Im curious as what you spent just in lumber. I understand if you dont want to say. Just have a tight budget.

Steve Barton We know that feeling when you find your camper has been destroyed. Because our inside was seemingly ok (furnace, pump, electrical), it was easy for us to decide on the repurpose. Lumber (including the steel roof) came to roughly $1,200. Steep maybe - but sturdy...and we were learning along the way. We LOVE this micro-space and plan to stay in it when we’re ready to build a cabin of our own. Great practice....and an awesome space for family and friends to stay later on.
