Porcupine Tree - What Happens Now - First Listen/Reaction 

Richard's atmospheric pads on this track are sublime

Such a great band. They were what led me into listening to Opeth. I can't imagine life without these two bands anymore.

Colin is the backbone of this song, yes. But Gavin’s snare is keeping the beat with the bass while his cymbal bell is playing along with SW’s guitar and Richard’s keyboard in a completely separate beat…...

Ah, another from the live "Anesthetize" DVD - must say I do like this one a lot. Only heard the live version before - and probably prefer it - but this was cool too. Great playing from the band. Looks like I need to check out more, so I will.

So this Beggs the question, who's playing bass live if not Colin? Nick would probably be my first choice, but maybe Gail Ann Dorsey? Levin?

1. Neil Peart was a fan of Gavin Harrison so that seems perfect. Gavin with Getty and Alex... that's too much. 2. This is one of their songs that is equally good live or studio version. 3. This song does a lot with very few words. The first time I heard this I was sure there was another verse coming. It does reinforce with me that this amazing band is 90% about the music (musicians/composition/sound). The lyrics are often an afterthought for me. I normally don't pay attention to the lyrics much until the 3rd or 4th listen. 4. There are a few reasons why I believe they are generally better live and those reasons vary from track to track. The one consistent difference in favor of the live versions is Steven Wilson's voice. I prefer his voice live. It's normally the other way around. On so many tracks, he seemed/seems to go for an ethereal, almost delicate sound with his voice in the studio. His voice sounds more natural and substantial to me when he's on stage.
