Porsche 911 S/T review - is it Porsche's greatest 911 yet?

This is the new Porsche 911 S/T. And the good people of Porsche's GT division say that it's nothing other than the most exciting 911 they've ever made.
Which, given that even in recent history they've made the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 and the 911 R is no small claim.
On the face of the S/T is a 911 GT3 with the engine out of a GT3 RS, but Porsche being Porsche things aren't quite that simple.
A raft of tweaks make the kerbweight 1380kg, very similar to the 911 R. It loses the GT3's active rear steer, too, and there's a lighter flywheel and clutch.
This all places less demand on the 518bhp/525PS naturally-aspirated four-litre engine, so it spins and zings even more freely.
The bald stats say this car can do 0-62mph in 3.7sec and has a top speed of 186mph. But there is much, much more to it than that.
Join Autocar's editor-at-large Matt Prior as he drives the 911 S/T and finds out what makes it tick.

Another incredibly-priced 911, made out of unobtainium, already pre-purchased by Porsche's anointed customers 25 years ago during a secret seance, that no one will ever drive nor see as it will be bubble-wrapped in silk, hidden 3 miles underground in a billionaire's 400 car garage. If Porsche were really serious about wanting people to drive these cars, they'd make 19,630 of them - not 1963. The entire Porsche game is almost as farcical as Ferrari these days. So why even bother road-testing such unavailable things just to tease us into misery? This is akin to flaunting a stripper in front of convicted criminals. Never going to feel, never going to touch. Get back in your cell!

Beautifully worded, modern Porsche is a shell of it's former self, that weaponizes artificial scarcity to power a brand stretched too thin.

It feels like Ferrari and Porsche are playing the same cynical game. Let's see how much we can screw out of rich people. It's amazing how those cars are always all sold out, yet instantly dealers have 2nd hand examples for sale at a massive premium. You could say it's great business but don't kid us it has anything to do with a love of cars or driving

One day, hopefully you might be in a position to buy something like this. Then you’ll be told by your dealer that they have all been sold, but luckily, we do have one available at double list price…..Personally I think the 2017-2020 991.2 GT3 manual looks better and makes more sense.

@@ArtVandelayOfficial Because it’s already the legend, is more accessible and has a better looking front end. Plus it may be academic, but I prefer the idea of the GT3s 198 mph top speed, compared to the 186 of the S/T. Also I don’t know if I need a close ratio manual box, in a car that already spools up too fast for optimised gear changes.

Had you changed a car every week (or so) you would have been bored by them as well. That's a "dark side" of a car journalist's life... ;) Besides, I take their word for all these magnesium wheels/single flywheel inertia advantages and wonder how to make a safe but still blind test that would support these claims.

I suspect that the reason it feels wider is that - it is! While it may be true that at 1852mm wide, it’s the same or similar to the GT3 RS 4.0, I believe the way they measure this is from the center of the rim > to center of the rim. With much larger front rims than the RS 4.0, this way of measuring would actually hide a bit of the true width; if it was measured from the outer edges of the tires, I suspect it would be a noticeably wider measurement than the cars you’re comparing it to.

I'm strangely unmoved. You'd have to drive it to know for sure, but my sense is that a 991.1 R would be preferable from the really modern catalogue. And I have zero doubt a 996.2 RS is miles more engaging. That car is so hard to beat.

Yeah a few folks will get them. Porsche buyer royalty who have spent 10's of millions on their cars, or someone known by the dealer who agrees to sell it back to the dealer at their cost within an agreed upon date/mileage. Then the dealer will double or triple the price and market it as a CPO to for the pee-on regular enthusiast.

Porsche make me laugh with all the bla bla and the public laps it all up so more power to them. I will stick with my old Air cooled 911 for real driver engagement over real public roads.... it already has a slower steering rack that this car is trying to replicate, its far smaller so i can enjoy it on tight back roads and place it through lanes with perfection. And no need to wait and pay a premium for it, and I can actually use all of the engine unlike the modern cars.
