Gary Cotton I just bought a '76 2.0. It was a barn find. It had been stored for 25 years. Rust is minimal. I don't know if it runs because the previous owner removed the transmission to replace the clutch and never finished the job. The Haynes manual says that the engine and transmission must be removed to do said work. The engine in my 914 wasn't removed during the attempt to replace the clutch so I'm prepping the car for removing said engine. Got any advice on what I should be careful of when I do this?

dewder74 I did my clutch without removing the engine. It was pretty easy but moving the car with the trans out and the engine still in is near impossible because the engine is only supported by the cross bar. You will need to pull the motor or find a way to safely stabilize it. Dropping the engine isn't hard. If you have carbs there's nothing to it if you have injection make sure you tag all hoses and wires so you know exactly where they reattach. Take plenty of reference photos also. They help on reassembly. When you reinstall the engine do it with the tranny attached as one unit. If you are on Facebook p.m. me. I'll give you my number and you can call. I'll be glad to assist.

Gary Cotton I tried looking for you on Facebook. There are a lot of Gary Cottons on FB. I found one who posted a picture of a Porsche warehouse and commented that there has to be a 914 in there somewhere. I sent him a message; hopefully, him is you. :)

I forgot to mention that my 914 still has the original fuel injection. I'm confused in regards to how this engine was configured. I found a factory sticker in the engine bay that says that anything related to emissions wasn't installed, all related hoses have been plugged and the car doesn't have a catalytic converter; and it won't pass the CO2 test for California in 1976. Here's the confusing part. The engine plate number starts with "GC". Everywhere that I've read suggests that that engine was built for a California car. If I understand, 914's that weren't sold in California had engine codes that started with "GA". So it makes me wonder if my 914's engine is original or if this is its 2nd engine. Or considering that mine is from the last year of production, maybe Porsche was trying to clear out their parts inventory and simply built 914's with whatever parts they had laying around. They didn't have any "GA" engines so they built mine with a "GC". But that's all speculation. I'm rambling. Thanks for your time. Hope to find you on Facebook.
