For a little over two years now, we have been the fortunate owners of a 1995 Porsche 993 Carrera Cabriolet - the last of the air-cooled Porsches; the “prom queen” of the entire 911 line. It is a beautiful car and an amazing drive! We will run you through the car and detail our experience and what stands out for us with the car. Come along on a beautiful day for a fall ride in the Colorado mountains for and some great scenery and a fun talk on what makes this car so spectacular!
We hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please give it a “Thumbs up” and Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos - usually Saturday mornings.
We do lots of types of videos on this channel: Vlogs, How To/Hacks/DYI, Travel, Events, etc. Check out some of the other videos we have on our channel.

Hi Everyone, Let us know what you think of this slightly different format - A little more "business" ;) (Drone is out for the count - AGAIN!). Let me know if you could hear us well enough and if it held your interest. If you want to learn more about 993s, a great book is "Porsche 993 Essential Companion" by Adrian Streather. A good friend loaned me the book and I read it cover to cover in a weekend. It is a tad pricey, but lots of great info. A must read. 993 is a big topic so there will be more on the way - oil change is next! Thanks, Franny

Watching all of the video AND reading the comments and answers. So much to learn. I understand your love for the 993 (as much as I have my reasons to dearly love my early (…) 964) congrats to your surpassing the 3000 !!!

I liked this video, the format seemed nice. The audio was fine and I could see the two if you engaging in the discussion. It almost seemed like I was there along for the ride. :-) I have owned and absolutely loved my two air cooled 911's over the past 40 years. My first Porsche was a 1977 911S Targa 2.7 that was like new when I bought in the summer of 1980, as a young engineer with a new job. That was a beautiful ivory colored car that I should have never sold. It was still like new when I traded it in for a new 911SC. You two own a nice set of Porsche's, the 993, the 996 turbo, and the 356. All you need now is a 914! :-)

Thanks so much! I feel like I left a bunch out! The twin windshield wipers parked on the driver's side to clear the driver's side first and double-cover 80% of the windshield! Airbags (and horn issues), power steering, central alarm, back seats don't go down on the cab, bla, bla, bla... :) More to come! Thanks, Franny

Great video. Sound is fine - no problem hearing you guys or that wonderful flat 6! I like the technical stuff. It's one of the reasons I love cars - their engineering. You guys certainly know your cars, something that is becoming rarer as cars get more complex and many these days sadly just don't care. So good to see real enthusiasts enjoying and understanding their cars and sharing that passion with all of us.

Your 993 is my favorite in your stable of amazing vehicles - it's a timeless classic with one foot (er, tire?) in the old-school air-cooled realm of yesteryear and one in the modern era. It drives amazing, sounds awesome and is built very, very well. I wish I could have stretched my $$$ a little further and got a 993 instead of our 997 C4S but just couldn't get there. Great video and very insightful.

SAI, secondary air injection on 97 993 An easier(?) way to clean the SAI ports on the exhaust port involves removing the exhaust pipes/heat exchangers and removing some components at the top SAI check valve. It is an involved task. But it does not require special Porsche tools or removing engine heads. There are several RU-vid videos to watch and learn. I have done it and you can get more info on Rennlist forum. A modified bicyle brake cable was a must for me. It had to be short enough and had to be tapered just right. Good luck.

My dad had skin cancer that was incredibly close to his brain, so I started a hat business. I am sorry you do not like our ladies style hats. There are lots of car events outdoors and I felt there were not enough women protecting their heads at this elevation. Colorado is well known for cases of skin cancer. You can see the hats on our website. I am very fair skinned, so I feel they have made a huge difference to me in my life. Heidi

Great video! Here is a maintenance tip. The secondary air ports are accessible for service by removing the upper valve covers and installing a drilled out bolt in the upper three valve cover bolt holes in the cam towers. You can inject solvent, and then blow out with compressed air. I cleared a check engine light on my own 98 993 using this procedure. It is good to remove the upper valve covers and blow the ports down once in a while for maintenance. You can hear the air at the muffler if the ports are clear. If the ports are not clear inject with solvent and let sit over night then try blowing with air. It’s best to remove the oxygen sensors temporarily when re starting the engine, as there will be a burn off of solvent which could damage the sensors. This procedure has worked and saved an engine tear down to clear the SAI ports on more than a few occasions, and is a good procedure to be aware of.

+1. .. Great approach to servicing the SAI emission ports. .. (Check idiot light found on ODB II 993's) .. My MY98 C2S check engine light will come calling one day, but for now . . . . With fingers crossed,,, servicing the SAI systems check valve every 25K miles has kept any vein clogs at bay. .. Starting at 11 delivery miles until today the coupe is at 82,000 miles. .. Would luv to understand more about the "drilled maintenance tip" in detail. .. Cheers, M/S

Well Heidi is not just a pretty face behind the camera most of the time. I've never seen her work on any of your cars but she knows a lot about them. Those sensors for the top and the ones for the windows that make them go up and down are a problem on other cars like the Audi convertibles. The ones on the windscreen for the top latch get dirt in them and mess them up. I remember Ed China fixing a vario-ram on one of these. The turning mechanism stripped out. Also the mechanism for the spoiler has a gear tooth thing just on one side that some of the teeth wore off and had to be replaced so it would function properly. Actually cheap and easy fixes. I'd almost be afraid to have an air cooled engine in stop and go traffic especially in hot climates like here in Vegas. I don't think they'd do well.

Great info … one to add … If you are not lucky enough to be in a warm country, keep an eye out for the rear heatshields behind the bumper causing rust issues in the rear chassis and bumper dumb irons. In wet conditions the heatshields cause crap to be held against the chassis and then dry/wet cycle it causing terrible rust attack on the chassis, protection there seems to have been poor from the factory. Similar sort of slow creeping issue as the lower windscreen surround, but much less obvious until it becomes very annoying/costly.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
+Craig Morgan. We are pretty lucky with our climate here, however the car was from Pennsylvania. I think we took off a heat shield because it was recommended. I am not which one. Thanks for the input. Heidi

You note the squeal on the CCU unit. Yes the little fan behind the unit can be dismantled and lubricated but I have found with my 95 993, that even after replacing that fan it still made noise. The sound wasn't the little air temp fan but the two blower motors behind the firewall. The spindles on these are sintered bronze (self lubricating). Over time they will eventually make that noise all the time and fail completely. About a 3-4 hour job to replace them. Not really as the fuel tank expansion tank has to be moved. Note, two fans, not the same size between the driver and passenger side.

I love the 993 and I’ve been waiting for this video. Great video as always. Many thanks for sharing. The 964 and 993 have indeed similar rear spoilers and HVAC switches. Gear ratios are a bit longer for 3rd and 4th on the varioram engines as they have more torque. Also they sound a bit different high up in the rev range.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Thanks for that! We have a friend who had a 964 and wishes he hadn't sold it. I wish I had gotten a ride before he did! I think of the 964 as the pinnacle of the G-Body and the 993 as a transition car to the 996 and beyond. Pretty different cars. The 964 is getting popular and is finally seeing its day. Thanks for the info on the varioram cars. It is a neat system. I love how Porsche will change the gearing for that. I hope to drive one some day! Our car has a distinctive howl at about 3100rpm. It is a little out of the blue if you sit there for long. Maybe I'll get one of those rings for the intake to enhance the sound ;) If we didn't have such strict emissions here the OBDII cars would be a first pick. Franny
@freerkderuiter8822
@freerkderuiter8822 6 лет назад
Might have been mistaken about the gearboxes. I think there were two types used for the standard 993, the G50/20 and the G50/21. Ratios were different. For the G50/20: 1st gear: 3.82 2nd gear: 2.05 3rd gear: 1.41 4th gear: 1.12 5th gear: 0.93 6th gear: 0.78 Ring and pinion: 3.44 And the G50/21 1st gear: 3.82 2nd gear: 2.15 3rd gear: 1.56 4th gear: 1.24 5th gear: 1.02 6th gear: 0.82 Ring and pinion: 3.44

That was a good review - definitely enjoyed the exhaust view/sound on the windup! Unless I missed it (and could have) - did you discuss the brakes much? They must be pretty decent/transparent to use. Probably not as strong as the ceramic rotors on your 996, I suppose! :-)
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Hi Cam, I didn't mention the brakes, did I? They are really transparent I suppose. The Supers got a little bigger brakes and red calipers. Our car's are black, but they work really well. They do have ABS and 205 tires up front and 245 in the back on the standard 16" rims so a good amount of rubber on the road too. I am a little embarrassed to admit that I baby this car a bit because it is so clean. It is very chuck-able and no part of the car has ever really given me cause for alarm. Franny

Thanks, Franny - that does sound like a solid wheel and braking setup. I've wanted a 993 for a long time, but prices may be out of reach now. About 9 years ago just out of grad school, there was a '97 C4S with some miles on it (like 80,000) that sat around for a while at $25K. Every once in a while, I regret a bit not having gone for it. Who knows what condition it was really in. Still, I appreciate your reviews, and am impressed by your tasteful car collection. I probably wouldn't have the Mini, but the others are all great! :-) Cam

Franny, I am considering a 90 7993 with the RUF modifications. The check engine light does not come on with the key which to me is suspect… It does not have the standard emissions systems any longer. I wonder if you have any thoughts on what should be checked? PS, I love your videos. Subscriber.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 3 года назад
Hi Steve, a '97 993? That would be an OBDII car and should (is required) to have a CEL. You can't pass emissions here without it. As for thigs to check, you need the whole story on the CEL. In addition, pull all the codes from the OBDII and check those as well. The 993 has an issue with clogged air injection ports. That is a big deal on the II cars. The rest is the clutch, rust (shouldn't be any), body/collision work. Make sure both distributors are working. But I would want to know every detail of the modifications. For me, most modifications lower the value so I would need to know how much. Look for panel gaps - especially the bonnet to the pumper. It should be perfect. You need to know all suspension mods and are all the original parts included... If you have any uncertainty take it to a good shop that knows air-cooled to look it over. Good luck with it. Hiedi and Franny Would be great to know your thoughts on a 993 tiptronic version. I am looking at the 993 as my daily driver but the coupe is out of my budget. I can however get into a tiptronic based on my budget so what are your thoughts on this transmission.

I don't have any direct experience with it, but I believe it is pretty straight forward and works well.

Ok very nice review. I have at least minor one electrical issue a year: You get a ! for the belt sensor of the cooling fan. Then ABS relais replacement also comes with ! And the car eats light bulbs for the headlights lat least once a year... everything not a big deal but a little annoying
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 5 лет назад
I have heard that but our car has been pretty good. It did break its top latch motor and that was fun... I wonder if your voltage regulator is off a bit? once a year seems excessive...

What mic were you guys using to drown out the noise?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 5 лет назад
Hi, the mic’s should be listed in our video description, BUT the best one by far has been a RODE wireless mic. You have to have an audio mic jack in the camera to work (I hear some of the Sony’s do not have). We love the RODE wireless.

Currently shopping carefully for my first 911, dream since I was a kid. This is by far the best and most informative video I’ve found by real owners. Thank you! Can’t decide between 964, 993 or 997. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hi Don, They are very different! The 964 is the final incarnation of the "G" body cars (like the 3.2 Carrera). It is a bit rough and hard-core. A good place to start for a track car. Singer starts with a 964 for their cars. The 993 is more sublime... With that multi-link rear end suspension, it drives more like a 996, but has the drama of the air-cooled engine. Reliable and comfortable, it was built for a different market - Drivers instead of the 964's Enthusiast. The 997 feels completely modern up against the two air-cooled cars. Quiet, efficient, reliable, great accessories, lights, etc. Faster, handles better - in every measurable way better. But... less drama, history, panache, feel and more subdued looks. So, it comes down to if you want modern or classic and all that entails. Good luck with your quest! F

@@HeidiandFranny Great videos--very informative! I've watched a few of your DIY videos and wanted to ask which one (964, 993, or 997--and also 996) would you say is more friendly to DIY mechanics?

hey, cool video, very educational one. I have a couple of questions. 1. I found one from Japan, 1996 993, about 58k miles, Auto, red interior. They were selling for 50k usd CIF to my destination. Now is this price worth buying? 2. What is the common problem for this air cooled car, does it get overheat when you stuck in traffic? thank you if you could reply to me. cheers

@HeidiandFranny 5 лет назад
Here in the States the prices have soften a bit for the 993 - especially for a Tiptronic. You could get that car (dependent on condition) for the lower to mid $40Ks... That may be very different anywhere else. The 993 manages its temps quite well and has an oil cooler with fan up front. One suggestion would be to remove the bottom engine cover (if it hasn't been removed already). That will help with air flow. Our 3.2 isn't happy with stop and go, but we haven't had any issues with the 993.

New York City's island long traffic jam's,, on a hot July summer's day will expose the weakness of any cooling system. .. My otherwise Colorado-based '98 993 C2S spent a few days in the cities hot-N-humid midtown jungle once. .. The 993 handled the torturous turtle crawl conditions with ease. .. The 3.6l oil fill was/is M1 - 15w-50 with standard engine cooling; There is the factories optional cooling system enhancement if desired . .. Its an addition of a 2nd (small) oil cooler w/o fan assist. .. Didn't see the option's need or value when ordering my '98 coupe, however throughout the years I've installed this additional oil cooler on a few buddies 993's. .. Still, don't understand the option's need on a street coupe. .. P.S., by all means, remove the engines undertray if it's present. .. A function of the undertray is engine noise reduction by way of encapsulation. .. Cheers, M/S

If you could only have one, either a 993 c2 or a 996/997 turbo, what would it be and why?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 года назад
Ah, an easy question... NOT! Lol. Gosh... Um... Uh... I think I would go for the 993. I love the sophistication, the ride, the old skool look and interior and it just feels smaller and more intimate. The power of the TT is really alluring, but hard to actually use. Although, it is a great highway cruiser though and great for long trips. LOTs of confidence passing on the highway. You get modern controls/heat/cooling, etc. The top is MUCH easier to work with and it is an all-around safer car. There is just something to driving a piece of Porsche history. It is a really hard choice. I think Heidi would go for the 997TT ;)

Great videos ladies! I too have the pleasure of owning an 85 3.2 Targa Euro and a 96 Carrera coupe. I enjoy both cars immensely but found the 993 in stock form.......not quite "edgy" enough for my expectations for a 911. Consequently, I have lowered to Euro height, installed Bilstien coilovers, and replaced the stock shift linkage with an RS shift rod. For my tastes, the car is now a lot closer to an ideal air cooled 911. I have done many 600 mile days in her and I can safely say that it is not a car for listening to the stereo and watching the miles go by, but more a car where when you get out after a full day, you wonder where the hours went.

Hi Brunner, I think you are correct. The NA 996 base Carrera is lighter than the 993 (but not by much). I think you are right that the 996TT is heavier (my bad). Thanks for the call out. Franny

Someone told me that 95 was the best year for the 993. Is there any truth to that?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
That is an interesting question! So, the '95 is an OBDI car and the 96 is an OBDII car meaning that the '95 does not have a check engine light. Very nice for emissions if your head air ports are even slightly clogged. Also, the later models have an "immobilizer" which can be a pain if the remote isn't working properly. But, the later cars get a HP boost and the "Varioram" intake system for their troubles... There are also some styling cues with that "basket handle" on the Cabs and Coupes. I'm really happy with our earlier car if that helps :) F

No wonder that you think the 993 feels lighter, as the model you're in typically weighs less, typically 1370 - 1420 as a manual, while the 996 weighs more in the range 1650 - 1700 kg all depending on equipment of course.. The turbo models are always heavier, and the automatics even more so. Where did you find the weights you're showing in this video? They're off quite a bit on the 996 TT.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Huh... That is a bit screwy. I went back and that 996 number came from Wikipedia. I should have labeled it as 996 and not 996TT (it is a bit more) - my bad. The 993 number is pretty close for a Cab. So, if that 996 (NA) number is correct, then the 996 was about 70kg lighter than the 993. Would you agree with that? Franny

Everything fine but one thing : Your 996 has more weight than this one.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 6 лет назад
Yup! You are absolutely correct... I totally mislabeled that. That weight (and I still think that is optimistic) is for a bare bones 996 C2 coupe. Part of Porsche's marketing was that the 996 was lighter and more powerful than a 993 with a drop in displacement and increase in fuel economy. My bad on that. Thanks for the correction :) Franny
