Ron shows you how he wired his Portable Woodshop. It is very complicated, but he is such an amazing teacher; you will think it is simple by the end of the video.

I bought these LED T8 lights from eBay. You should looked into taking out the florescent tubes and adding the LED. All you do it take out the ballast and wire directly to the White and Black wires. alot less wattage and so much brighter!

As an electrician the only thing that I would of done different is remove the hardwired gfci and replace it with a in line removable one. The reason is if you are at a job and the outlets you hooked up to were gfci protected already you most definitely will have a double gfci nuisance tripping issue and that's not efficient. -regards

I am surprized to see an extension cord through the floor. I would have expected an R/V power connector with a three prong male plug on the outside.

+The Garlic Farm The method I use is more lean in two ways: 1. It is less expensive. 2. The 100' 10/3 cord is in place and never has to be moved; I simple feed out the amount I need. In the end it saves money, time, and energy.

+Ron Paulk I disagree. An R/V power connector is only $25 which is nothing over the life of the trailer. It's less expensive than a hose reel. There's no possibility of water splashing in through the hole in the floor. That can make a mess on wet or snow covered roads. It also lets me use a shorter cord on jobs where I can park close to an outlet. A shorter cord means less voltage loss which is better for the compressor motor and other tools. I will admit that there is minimal power loss with a 10 gauge cord but shorter is always better with extension cords. The time difference between uncoiling a cord and plugging in each end compared to unwinding it from a reel and feeding it through a hole is negligible. Either way is more efficient than most contractors who run extension cords all over the job.

+The Garlic Farm I agree, we both have a way that works for us. My goal for this channel is not to say my way is right, but that having a system and being organized is always better. Thanks for the feedback.

+Ron Paulk As a painting contractor who tends to be very organized one of my most frustrating situations is working for a disorganized general contractor. I should suggest your channel to them. It might make my job easier.

No issues popping a breaker in the home? Some of the homes down here are wired with 14ga with all 15 amp circuits. A good quality compressor alone will often trip a breaker. I carry around a hot lead with multiple 20amp breakers to temporarily tie into a breaker panel with a dedicated circuit for my tools. What do you do on jobs without electricity?
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop 9 лет назад
Ricky Mcgrath We use the same 14 wire and 15 amp here. I have no problem other than the compressor on cold days. The large wheel barrow compressors that are belt driven will work on the weakest power and not trip breakers. If you have room, the larger compressors are quieter, faster recovery, and just all around better. In all of my time building homes and doing finish carpentry, I have never worked on a home without power. In new construction, the electrician sets a temp meter before excavation starts.

I hope you have some form of lojack installed in that trailer, all too often trailers go missing.

Joseph Malovich When someone tries to open the door or tow it away, it explodes and destroys everything within 500 square feet. The tools and trailer are gone, but I have good insurance and there are 1 or 2 fewer thieves;0)

Ron Paulk I feel a secret knock or else flamethrowers would work, or high voltage on the trailer tongue so the thieve's tow truck bursts into flames.

Now that you have your trailer setup, do you wish you would have chosen a longer trailer, or does this one seem to have plenty of space for your needs?
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop 9 лет назад
William Todd William, I am satisfied with the size. I am forced to be very organized and continue to refine the storage, which in my " less is more " phase of live, is good a thing.

Ron Paulk Thank you for the quick reply Ron. I figured that the space would be adequate and quite possibly you chose a smaller size trailer on purpose in order to more appropriately make use of the space you have and use your organization skills to their best. The trailer looks great, and I can understand why you went back to a trailer after having the box truck for a while. Makes it nice you can leave the trailer at a job site and drive home, or run errands, etc. Thanks again Ron for your great videos.

Is the compressor outlet daisy chained to the GFI outlet like the outlets in the rear of the trailer? Or is the compressor outlet direct power from the extension cord while the rest of the trailer outlets are GFI protected?
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop 8 лет назад
The whole trailer including compressor are on the same circuit.

Nick B The ground-fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, is a fast-acting circuit breaker designed to shut off electric power in the event of a ground-fault within as little as 1/40 of a second. It works by comparing the amount of current going to and returning from equipment along the circuit conductors.

Thanks Ron. We call it an RCD in Australia, that's probably why I was thinking he's crazy not to run an rcd in there somewhere!

Love all your videos. I've got to ask though, this doesn't seem as efficient as it could be. Unless I'm missing something, the process is, walk to the back of the trailer in the dark, open the floor gate, feed air and wire through hole, exit trailer, pull line to power, re-enter trailer in the dark, plug in pigtail in the dark, flip switch for lights. You're effective use of space and efficiency on the job seems lost a bit in this process. I'm willing to be wrong if I've missed something.
