Portuguese vs Chavacano - Can They Understand Each Other!? 

Why did you say "Brazil" like if it was a Spanish word? That "z" is a real "z". In Portuguese it's "Brasil" but it's pronounced "z", as well. The brazilian guy should've said "Ricardo", not "Bracordow", like many americans say!

Actually it kinda felt like it's dying Most people flock here and don't speak chavacano mostly Filipino and bisaya. But no worries we'll keep it alive. And the part that i felt dumbfounded was when a Muslim here does speak chavacano.

Porque para mi concepto el chavacano parece más fácil de entender que el portugués de BR para una persona hispana que no habla portugués (en mi caso yo sí entiendo portugués bastante). Creo que es porque aunque pronuncian las palabras diferentes (más similares al portugués de hecho) el acento del dialecto chavacano suena más fácil de entender que el acento de Brasil para nosotros los hispanohablantes.

Acho o espanhol extremamente mais fácil de entender, mas achei esse idioma tmb muito similar

I'm Italian and I understand both French and Spanish,but for us Italians Spanish is easier to speak and understand than French.I understand Brazilian Portuguese.In a few words Italian is my first language after American English.Though Italian and Spanish are 'sisters languages' it's easier to make a lot of mistakes in Spanish rather than in English 'cause some words have a completely different meaning though they're written and pronounced in the same way both in Italian and in Spanish. An example is burro that means butter in Italian and donkey in Spanish

probably because chavacano sometimes follow the VSO sentence structure of tagalog and other austronesian languages such as hawaiian, but unlike tagalog chavacano sentences cannot be turned into SVO situationaly

There are many variations of Spanish around Latin America, there's accents in every country, also many regional and local slangs but it's all Spanish, to me Chavanco is simply Filipino Spanish since Hispanohablantes can understand it. Some of my Mexican relatives understand almost all of it and they have a hard time understanding Argentinians and Dominicans 😂

When I listen to Tetum it seems that I am listening to a radio that I cannot establish the tuning tune in, tune out, tune in, tune out understand, don't understand, understand, don't understand, understand, don't understand.

Tetum is only influenced by spanish like some of the filipino languages as compared to Chavacano which is a Spanish Creole.

maybe its because spain has lost of hold of philippines a long time ago than the Portuguese had on timor. im not sure im just guessing.its been more than hundred yrs since phils freed from spain and the US get into the phils and incorporated all their culture and influence including their language. the more filipinos adapt to the american language the more it loses its grip on spanish language. but im not sure

Spanish is very similar to Portuguese, you should try it some day. "Me puedo hablar tagalo y inglés y ahora estoy aprendiendo español. Deséame suerte." would become "Eu posso falar tagalo e inglês e agora estou aprendendo espanhol. Me deseje sorte."

Everytime a hispanic immigrant comes to my country we don't need any english AT ALL, and if we don't know a word, we explain the meaning of the word in our native languages, everytime i talked with a hispanic there was 0 need of using english, we just talk in a regular speed and it feels like we are speaking in the same language, but in the internet i only see hispanics saying that they cannot understand a single portuguese word and blablabla it's all bs

@@Hunchbackswift They are sister Romance languages, which is good, yet it diverged differently. Mentioning the obvious isn't hating one over the other. If a Spanish person wants to learn Portuguese, or vice versa, it's their choice. After all, bridging the gap on vocabulary, pronunciation, among other factors, still maintains their link among these two Iberian-based groups.

Portuguese didn't developed from spanish. They were born from the same mother (latin) and then they splited and evolved differently. 🤷‍♂️

The “Na” in Chavacano de Zamboanga most probably comes from Cebuano. It just happens to mean the same-ish thing. Just like “Mucho” and “much” mean the same thing but they are not cognates. It’s just a coincidence. Much is rooted in a Germanic word and mucho is rooted in a Latin word from which “muito” and “molto” come. In Spanish, “na” is “en la.” So unless Chavacano is using an older type of Spanish that uses “no” and “na” it probably comes from Cebuano or another Visayan language.

@@toiletholder The Spanish language of the early colonial period is not the modern Spanish language that we have now.. thanks to Cervantes. The proximity of Tidore and Ternate to Mindanao can explain such contraction because Tidore and Ternate were passed on back and forth to the Spanish and Portuguese until the islands finally fell to the VOC. The people of these islands fled with the Spaniards to the Philippines and settled in Cavite & Zamboanga.. Formal institutions were yet to be established in the early days of colonial settlement. There were no formal training to learn languages. It’s for sure a monkey do-monkey say way of understanding each other. I could be wrong or whatever read it in one of Isaac Donoso’s works.

Chavacano has some portuguese in it (the guy Ricardo even said it sounded like Portuguese) because of the mixed ship crew before --being Spanish and Portuguese. These are the ships in the 1600s that were based in Cavite and subsequently went to Zamboanga City to counter the local pirates. The fort that they've built then still exists today, Fort Pilar.

To me Chavacano is just normal Filipino Spanish with an accent with a few local native words same as in Mexico with Aztec/Nahuatl words, or any part of Latin American with infused native words but I've heard Formal Chavacano is simply Mexican/Galician Spanish from the 16th century.

According to the comments here there was also some Galician in the mix. Galician is the most similar language to Portuguese.

pretty much the same based on my first hand experience. chavacano speakers are having difficult time understanding spanish, maybe only about 30% to 40% but most spanish-speakers understand chavacano probably around 70% of the time.

O ghoverno español prefére unha gramática máis voltada polo castellano e o povo da Xunta pensa umha gramática máis aportughesada.
