The goal of The Wilderness Living Challenge Season 3 survival series is to GAIN or MAINTAIN body mass living only on 100% WILD FOODS! In this episode we cook a possum using primitive techniques.
Woodobo SPICE (FOR SALE): tinyurl.com/y7s5cnoo
BOOKMARK THE FULL PLAYLIST (2 Episodes per Week): • Season 3: The Wilderne...
Episodes will run every TUESDAY and FRIDAY 10 a.m. EST.
Bob Hansler: / horsebackbob
We weight-in and weigh-out and if we lose any body mass at all, we have FAILED the challenge!
Paypal Donations: www.paypal.me/TheWoodedBeardsman
t-shirts: shop.bonfire.com/twb/
In this episode we show you how to pluck the hair off a possum and then cook it primitively using just a few sticks. The hair is plucked using a wet rub over a hot flame to loosen the hair. This helps preserve all the fat and moisture in the meat. Find out if we prefer this method over the standard dutch oven for flavour and nutrient retention for wilderness living and survival.
Unlike Naked and Afraid, ALONE, or Survivorman, there is no limit to the tools we are allowed to use. Living off just WILD foods is harder than you think!
In this episode we set live traps for nuisance and fur bearing mammals which are legal in Texas including possum, raccoon, rabbit, skunk, armadillo, feral hogs, javelina, badger, fox, porcupine, bobcat, coyote, gopher, ring tailed cat, soft shelled turtle, red eared slider, rattle snake, water snake.
We hunt FERAL hog too!
We fish for catfish, alligator gar, long nose gar and drum, crawfish, crawdads, or yabbies, ghost shrimp, bluegill, rio grande perch, armored catfish, flathead catfish, blue catfish, alligator, freshwater clams, leopard Frog.
All wild foods are on the menu!
We seek out wild edibles including prickly pear cactus pads or nopal, cactus fruit or tuna, wild onions, mulberries, wild grape, Texas persimmons, pecan and anacua, mulberry, tasajillo, turks cap, yucca pods, cats briar, oion, chili pequin, duck weed, ground cherries, desert hackberry.

Finally got time to watch👍 Spit roasting is tricky Here's a tip. When open flame cooking don't add spices until final ten minutes. Spices will draw out all moisture and fat if applied before hand. Another thing is maybe pack cavity with prickly pads to add moisture and steam to the meat as it cooks . I'm not speaking blindly either 👍 Great job

Good team. Eating a possum reminded me of a fellow soldier who'd grown up very country poor. We'd just pulled into a liquor store... & he whipped out his pocket knife to dig a penny out of the hot tar of the parking lot. He grinningly held it up for me to see & declared with all honesty - you know... the feller who'd seen, and walked over this here penny, and didn't pick it up... never had to eat a possum or armadiller in his entire life! 72518

@@lylianx4209 In germany we have a saying: Wer den Pfennig nicht ehrt, ist des Taler nicht Wert. To be honest, i dont know if it makes sense for you if i translate it, but here it is: A person who doesnt honor the penny, is not worth the talers. Or: A penny saved is a penny gained. Or: Take care of the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves.

In Scotland we just burned the wool off sheep heads with a red hot fire poker or a blacksmith's torch. No need to get it wet before singeing. One additional step involved soaking it in cold water overnight before scrubbing the burnt wool off.

Great video! Catch & cook videos of a new species is what I enjoy most on this channel. But this beats all. I’ve scoured the internet for info on eating possums(which are plentiful in my area), to no avail. Not only that, but the fact you demonstrated how to keep the skin on is fantastic. You’re a trailblazer for those of us who want to try new foods and ways of doing things.

Cactus pads are delicious. I'm surprised you are passing them up and there are so many of them threre. They are great pickled or stir fried and are much better than green beans. Milder flavor and not as slimy if you cook it right. The cactus fruit are far tastier when they're red and ripe. They are a natural source of anti inflammatory juice. Look up nopales to find recipes for those cactus pads.

@johnbarton9128
@johnbarton9128 5 лет назад
I can't believe how unfriendly RU-vid is to channels that just show an example of the human experience going back to the early species of hominids. You can have a typical cooking channel where you prepare meat that's already been butchered, but the moment you hunt and clean one yourself you're deemed advertiser unfriendly. Another channel I like called Forgotten Weapons has a dude simply showing off historical firearms, taking them apart and explaining their circumstance, and that channel also experiences negative feedback from RU-vid. It's real fucked up that any channel that has anything to do with something political or have to do with a weapon, even safety videos, is shunned from the platform. I mean, Townsend and Sons is an extremely tame and wholesome channel about 18th Century living and it experiences the same thing.

Lol. I loved the last segment. Had a really cool astronaut vibe. I hope you do more segments like that in the future. Whole video was awesome as always but I think that was the best part.
