Feel the power of the drawbar! This one took a few redesigns, but the final product worked out well. Come along for the adventure and watch us screw some things up.

I remember a time when a poor, lonely lathe was given care love and attention, being fully restored, until it was discovered it had a crooked bed. Attempts were being made to prepare a machine to help the, uh, helpless lathe get straightened again. Please, if you see a lathe in need and give it all the love and it needs, to help it and you stay on that ONE path.

Side note: i went down the galvonic corrosion rabbit hole researching firearms grease with graphite in them . I think it was only a few seconds at the end where you showed the drawbar in operation. I found myself rewinding several times to try and get an idea how it all works together. Maybe an explanation of the junction block I guess you’d call it and the the rest of it etc

I rewatched your video partly for the heavy metal unicorn but mainly because it was placed in my feed again and I always enjoy them. However, when I first watched it, I did not realize you attempted to lever the air cylinder and gave up when you realised it would put pressureon the bearings. You could have a created the same or similar setup by continuing with the lever with an offset cam and connecting it to forks that would slide with the lever to grasp the spindle. Turn the air cylinder horizontal instead of vertical and when activated, it could slide forks to engage the arbor then continue in a pinching motion to release the colet. I doubt it would be less work and the solution you used is in and of itself fine. Just wanted to let you know you weren't entirely off in your initial attempts. You could have rube goldberg'd it together. Anyways. Thanks for the heavy metal unicorn!!! And thanks for the the awesome vids.
@robertqueberg4612
@robertqueberg4612 2 года назад
I really enjoyed the show on the linear tool release, but it seems to be limited in application to a “collet” for tool holders with a common shank diameter. This is similar to the retention knobs on Cat and BT tool holders. In a R8 spindle, there would not be any way to change out a collet, nor enough diameter for anything else. A NMTB 30 replacement spindle might give some chance if you could devise a working retention knob, collet, and closer ring, that would work inside the replacement spindle. If I have publicly shot off my big toe with these observations, I would certainly like to be enlightened, as it does seem to work well, and likely consumes much less air than a pneumatic impact wrench commonly seen on top of a Bridgeport. Thanks again for the presentation. It is a real mind opener for the person looking for a new method. I also like your 3D tracing paper for transferring contours to plate stock.

Had to watch it a few times myself. It never actually is coupled. The actuator rod just pushes down on the top of the spring loaded drawbar to release collet. When it retracts it isn't touching the drawbar.
@internettoughguy

This got me so goddamn confused. You said you used a 4" air cylinder. The part number shows a 2-1/2" cylinder, 1/2" stroke, 3 stage. That only does 1656lbs at 120psi according to Fabco's product documentation. It's '4.0" EQUIVALENT'. You have a 2-1/2" piston cylinder. You're not getting 2200lbs of force. Those max at 150psi which is only 2070lbs, and I doubt you're running it at that? Am I missing something? (and sorry to be curt, but I'm trying to understand all this myself completely before finishing a design & buying all the hardware)
