Power steering high pressure hose replacement - 2 to 4 hours.
This video will guide you through the process of replacing the high pressure power steering hose on a 6th generation Nissan Maxima. That should cover the 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 year models. Both ends of the house are visible from the bottom. One side just inside of the passengers front wheel, the other side goes into the rack on the drivers side. If you have small hands and arms, you can do this job without much frustration, however, if you have larger hands and arms, it will be quite a challenge.

Thanks again Robert DIY I took my pops and I about 3 hours with lunch. Taking the air cleaner off helped to see and maneuver the hose out and the most difficult part was bolting the top bracket as the space between the firewall made it tricky to get it on. Outside of that, my car and my pocket book really appreciated the DIY instruction. We owe you a beer!

Replaced my line today. After taking almost all day here is some tips that might work: Remove Airflow pipe that is connected to the air filter, remove the black hose connected to the engine by a clamp (radiator fluid), This gives you complete access to the power steering line bracket, and connection from above the car. Eliminating how much time you may have to spend under the car.

If you are going to change your own P.S. hose, THIS is the video to watch. Two things I think will help is to understand the routing of this hose, and do a dry run to recognize the parts in the video. Simple but tedious after that. The routing of this hose is shaped like a roller coaster. From the 24mm bolt under the car it goes UP the back of the motor to the 12mm manifold bracket, then DOWN to the center/bottom bracket on the backside of the engine and then OVER to the drivers side steering box. You can only see it from under the car. Once you watch the video and get under the car it all makes sense. Something else that makes this job a LOT easier is to remove the plastic/rubber intake boot that is clamped on between the air filter box and manifold. You can put your arm WAY down between the engine and firewall to access the hose brackets behind the engine. It makes seeing and routing the hose 100 percent easier too. Great video Robert.. Love the way you pronounce hose,,, "heouz"...

Robert, I did the same job today. I did not watch this vidio until the job was complete. It is my opinion you did a fine job explaining every aspect of the procedures. I did the job on a Nissan Quest. The only difference between the two is that you cannot see or access the bracket holding the hose from above. Removing and reinstalling this bracket is next to impossible. Fortunately I am a slim man with long arms so this allowed me to get the parts out and back in. Thanks for what you are doing.

Robert, I have a 2005 Quest, the set-up looks very similar only less room to work. I'm sure it is going to be a real PITA. I would like to thank you for making this video, it really helps knowing what you are going to be getting into before you start. I have always thought about making these types of videos but it seems like I never have the time or the patients, and again I don't know how G rated it would be either. If I notice anything different doing a 2005 Quest I will report back. Again SUPER job on the video and many thanks!

Another tip: I used a RUBBER BAND to hold the bolt and washers on the banjo. After getting the bolt and washer on banjo, wrap a rubber band around the bolt and the metal stud. This held the washer in place and allowed me to manipulate the hose enough to get the nut in place and hand threaded. I spent a good amount of time trying to get the bolt seeded with the washer using only one hand with access from underneath the car. As soon as I used the rubber band it only took a few minutes.

I just did this work with the help of this video (2002 Nissan Altima 3.5). It took 4+ hours. I did the driver's side from the top (remove the rubber air intake from the air filter to the exhaust manifold), the passenger side from the bottom and wheel well. Getting the old hose out, sliding the new hose in (from the driver's side top), and reconnecting the driver's side wasn't that bad. Reconnecting the passenger side of the hose SUCKED, however. I left the old top bracket attached to the exhaust manifold because the old 10mm bolt attaching the hose was missing, but the new 10mm bolt/screw to reattach to the bracket was damn near impossible to get in and tighten. Also, the new hose would just NOT line up with the power steering pump connection (with the 24mm bolt) while trying to hold two copper washers in place - all with one hand. Getting both of your hands in there is impossible. (It took two right hands - my son helped out). More tips from my rookie experience: 1) Have a 17mm wrench on hand to separate the pressure sensor from the hose AFTER you pull the old hose out (forget about disconnecting it in that tight space). 2) Don't try this job without a really long, snake-like funnel ready for the passenger side. Regular funnels can't get into the tight spaces and the fluid runs everywhere. 3) Get a good metric ratchet wrench set for tight spaced jobs like this one. A long 10mm (and perhaps a 24mm?) ratchet wrench would've been really helpful. 4) Have a helper to give you a 2nd right hand on hand? :)

Yes that is to much. I believe my friend ended up getting his line for something like $45 or $65. The retail cost was about $115. You can get a new hose from the dealer, a new hose from an after market store, or you can also remove the hose and have it rebuild at a hydraulic shop. My opinion is that it is always best to get the OEM hose. However, at the rate they are failing, there may be better options. You can check other dealers around the country, they will ship the part to you.

My O-ring kit came with two washers and two O-rings a big one and a small one but my original banjo bolt only had two washers on it no ring. So does my 05 Altima not need a oring on the banjo bolt? And also out of the two o rings I got in the kit, which goes on the driver side end? Or do both?

I'm in an 06 Maxima sl. I have a leaking problem, but I noticed in the reservoir on the bottom right third of the cup, there is a tiny space like it separated. I didn't know if that was just a little strainer kind of thing so nothing harmful gets in or if that was actually broken. It wasn't leaking too bad. I would go through maybe a quarter every week and a half, but starting today I had to fill it up twice! Any info you have would be great. Maybe if you could look in your reservoir and such? I'd appreciate it, but great video. If it is indeed the high pressure hose, then I will definitely use this video as a guide. Thanks again.

If it is the power steering system leaking I'd say it is the high pressure hose. Also, any leak that consumes over a quart per month is bad.

The easiest ps pressure hose you'll ever replace is on a Chevy pickup...having said that, imports with rack and pinion steering is always a challenge, dang hose starts at the pump and travels back to the rack...once I opened the hood and couldn't even see the hose, I knew I was in for a challenge....good video just the same, I'll take off the intake hose as one commentor suggested and see what this hose is about that has radiator fluid running thur it that you didn't remove.

Having spent a fair amount of time under the car and limited to only using one hand due to space limitations I am wondering if the entire project can be completed from above the car. Instead of putting the car on ramps, access to the banjo might be easier by just jacking the passenger side up, and removing the tire. This may give the necessary room needed to work with both hands and the needed space for the wrench or socket.

hey robert i did this job myslef thx for the info, i had one problem tho, i couldn't figure out how to get that rubber gromnet with the metail hook back on the line at the bottom, it seems fine without it, is it a big deal ? should i get help to put it back on?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 лет назад
I usually put stuff back the way it's suppose to go. I think it is there to avoid the line from rubbing other things. If you do NOT get it back on, make sure you check the line from time to time to make sure it is not moving or rubbing anything.

Thanks. I had a hard time finding any instructions on doing this and the shops want a pretty penny for it.

Seems all I need is a bit of patience for this diy fix. I'll be spending a few hours doing this today. I'll keep my tablet handy for reference. I did see another video where the tech showed where it was leaking on that high pressure hose. Out of curiosity, was it leaking from the crimp under the heat shroud? Great video Robert. Thank you!

Aldo Parenti Man, that was yesterday, I don't remember. They usually leak from the crimp seam. Always the high pressure hose.

Robert DIY This would be the 3rd such leak right around the 110,000 mile mark. I have two friends where that's where it leaked and coincidentally, it looks like mine is leaking from there also. I'm glad I caught it before my driveway paid the price.

Hello Robert, quick question just wondering hoow long did the project to change the hose took you?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 9 лет назад
Steve DeLeon In the about comments in the video it said 3 hours. If you know what you are doing, likely 2 hours or less. If you don't know what you are doing, as I did NOT, longer. It should not take you 4 hours.

Why is it that i have to wait 30 minutes to an hour before it stops whining? All the levels of the power steering are good. Do you have any ideas of what it could be?
