This is a later 1978 ultra-linear (UL) 135W Silverface Fender Twin Reverb that has extensive servicing and mods done before me, but customer complaining of noise and "glassiness" in the tone. We'll open it up and look at the mods done, and we'll eventually diagnose the problem down to bad output tubes, listen to one of them squeal like a tortured primate on command, then change tubes and rebias.

Personally I LOVE having that master volume there... it means you can drive the absolute hell out of the primary stage and not bring down every building within a 30 mile radius and have multiple nations filing noise complaints to do it.
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 7 лет назад
...and know something else...I was toying around with the pull boost on this example and was getting some really nice overdrive out of the amp. It took a while to EQ it and dial it in, but it did a half decent job of breaking up.
@DigBipper188
@DigBipper188 7 лет назад
That's something a lot of Fender's amps were renowned for (and still are)... amps like the BluesBreaker, Bassman, Champ and the twin 'verb can make some super nice drive tones when you dial them in with a super hot signal!!

Bruce Gerard Is it true though, as a rule of thumb, a master volume feature is more effective in lowering the output level than the attenuators dropping the overall wattage??
@NicholasGreen91
@NicholasGreen91 5 лет назад
I love it too. You can't practice pedal steel guitar on one of these with your highs disappearing. The Master Volume on this basically also serves as a treble bleed. Its wonderful for getting some harmonics at a lower volume. Lord forbid :) Just don't pull the volume knob outward ! lol!!

You can't use it on small gigs, i tried for years, the tone just isn't the same as my deluxe opened up, doesnt project or scream, this amp needs the master on 4-6 to sound like itself, which on a big gig, bar full of ppl, but don't think you can go tp a coffee house and put 1st stage on 10 and master on 2, it sounds terrible like that. Back in the seventies and eighties they used to do a gain boost where they essentially take the knobs for the speed and intensity and make that into Volume 2 and master and so it's like a boogie that one you can get a decent tone but it's still not with a twin sounds like a twin needs to be on 4 to 6 to really bleed and sound good

I own one of these. Bought it brand new and still have it today. I did go through speakers in the first few years. Finally put EV Force speakers in it. Now it's even heavier. I had to put bigger wheels on it. The amp still kicks butt. I never turn the master past 5 and it's still loud as hell. My favorite amp.

Another great vid, dude. I had to downsize in the late 90s from a Marshall 1959 to a combo. Got a Twin blackface reissue and never regretted it. This amp brings out the character of any type of guitar you run thru it.

I'm with you on the silver face master volume thing.. As well as a lot more along the lines of musical gear snobbery. The tone differences in some of these amps (vintage, late vintage or otherwise) is often so small (talking expensive amps and vintage) that how much is really discernible by the human ear??? Think about why we musicians have these tools? to make music!! Do any of us think that our audience while listening to us play make comments to each other such as "Oh my god, listen to that guitar players 78 silverface, that master volume is really negatively affecting his tone!" LOL

I don't know how the whole SilverFace hate started. Was it in the 70's, when the Blackface era amps were still pretty fresh of the factory? Or in the late 90's - early 00's when people started buying these heavily modified SF, nowhere near the original state and passing the word on the internet of ''how bad they sounds'' ? The biggest mistake you can make with a Silverface Fender is to compare it to a Blackface. It is not the same amp hence the different EQ, hence the different Tone. I own a 1977 SuperReverb with Master Volume and Ultra Linear Schematic. Even if this is considered an ''inferior'' amp in the Fender legacy, I still dig it a lot an play it much more than my other Blackface. You can dial really great tone from it and the Master Volume is pretty useful for late night practice.

I had one of those when it was new, AWESOME AMP! It also had some kind of push pull knob that I don't remember what it did. Only reason I ever got rid of it, was it weighed A TON! One time dragging it to band practice and I was done with it. Regret it now.

The Guitologist - I second what Lindsay said. I'm instantly turned off by gear demos that become wanking sessions/shred-fests. I want to hear the pedals/amps/guitars, etc., and it's easier on the ears when there's some space in the playing, and when one doesn't have to hear the same over-played guitar cliches over and over 😁

Great vid Brad! This one reminds me of a late 70's Silverface Twin MV that came to me many moons ago for a tube change and bias. Had the same type of cap changes and the use of snot in various places. Only difference is it had two EL 34 power tubes. All I can say it was a screaming banshee of an overdrive amp. Sounded like a cranked Marshall JCM 900 when the volumes were only at 9 o'clock. Always wondered who the mad scientist was who did those mods.

There must be some good sounding SS/modeling amps out there. There IS a difference between tube amps and SS! Whether they a MV or not. The main thing is that signature sound they both make. Tube amps sound much more musical by nature. I have a Marshall, a Silvertone, a Pignose, a Crate, and a 1957 Deluxe, all tube amps, they all sound different but they all have the tube amp tone! Even Vox's new $200 micro amp with a mini tube preamp has some of the tube sound. Tubes + guitar = tone! Thank you for listening to my rant. Thankz

Dang! Never seen a silver face with that many replaced components. Got that right about soldering in cap with value not facing up. I have many mid 60’s fender heads, most aren’t working any more. Got a lot of work to do resurrecting them from the dead. Use to have all 60’s hi-gain RCA 6L6’s, but the wife knocked the box of them over onto a time floor. 😫 I’m thinking my 4 Dual Showman’s & Vibroluxes have 2.5 or 3amp regular fuses. I definitely power up my old amps with a variac while monitoring the current. I have opened up a blown transformer and luckily fixed it because a melted wire was visible.

Hi, just wanted to ask you a question. I have a 1965 Fender blackface amp that has a plate voltage of 684 volts on the plates. The AMP plays alright, but I am concerned as to why the plate voltage is so high. I have replaced the output and choke transformers. I've cleaned all the pots and I have changed all of the sockets for the valves to high quality components. Don't know though about the high plate voltage. I'm wondering if I should just get a whole new board. This board is very warped. I Don know if that is a problem as well.Thanks Michael Newell from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

This video brought back memories for me. I had a '78 Twin Reverb with orange frame JBLs back then and tried so very hard to like it. When Fender went to the 135W output and master volume the tone just wasn't there at usable volume levels. I used it on hundreds of dates, finally tried a Lab Series L5 amp, sold the Twin, and never looked back. Actually, the Twin did make a pretty good bass amp, especially with those JBLs.
@edwhite7475
@edwhite7475 Год назад
I had the same amp...i hated it...so damn loud and ice picky clean. The master volume didnt work for me either...at all. This one had had an ungodly amount of roaches living in it from the previous owner...dis- gusting. I kept the speakers, one for a bass cabinet , lol, and the other for an old Leslie...and put some old Celestions in it...which made it sound better. I finally sold it to a pawnshop for $ 350 just to get it out of my house. My 2204 Marshalls are so much better for me.... That Twin is more suited to a pedal steel player. I took a loss on it...i think i paid $550 for it, and about a year later i bought a Kustom, late 80s era, solid state model Twin Reverb style combo, way used, for $35. 110 watts 2x12s, reverb and tremolo, and way more suited for me. I just wanted that tremolo sound.

I have a '81 twin, the speakers been upgraded from the original but don't know if anything else was done I will have my amp tech analyze it. All I know right now is that this thing is extremely heavy and powerful. Are the early '80's twins really that much different from the late '70's?

I just came from your recent Mesa video. First thing I notice when I see inside these old amps is "Damn what a rat's nest". People talk down at PCBs, but they sure do make life so much easier. I'd take a good, well laid out PCB over this mess any day. Sometimes I think people like things just because they're old. That said, to be fair, if I wanted to mod a circuit, point to point is preferable.

LOL Please tell me I'm seeing things. I'm at the 16 minute mark and seeing the the second time what looks like a cut black wire. If you see the black and white twisted wires (2) in the center of the screen, it looks like the right side (on the screen) of the black wire is cut from its connection point on the board. Does this get addressed later int he video? I saw it on the first go through of the board as well. LOL Love my '74 Twin Reverb!

Brad, I have a question for you. How do you tell the dates on tubes, transformers, and things like that? You was saying 1978 and 1977 and all I saw was a 7 or 8. I mean, wouldn't it be possible for it to be out of the sixties? I'm wandering, am I missing something?

Oops. When you did the second calculation, you forgot to divide by 2. The power for the 34k resistor was about 8.25W. This should have become clear to you when you settled on the 20k value - you lowered the resistance from 22k to 20k and increased the wattage from 17W to 19.6W. HTH

Just saw this and yes! You are correct! Nice catch! So that original resistor was obviously there for the original UL strapped OT config, because it was WAY cold biased in this operation.

Wow! Very interesting! That resistor sub box is so valuable. Did Fender alter all of the amp line after Leo sold out and were there any that was altered the least? Like the Twin? Thankz

The least altered amp from the BF to SF era that I know of is the Princeton. Very few changes on that amp from BF to end of SF era. Most bigger amps had many changes including the UL operation which came around 1977 or 1978 and most players say they hate. A previous tech had removed the UL leads and rewired the screens on the output tubes in this example.

When I was a kid the goal was to keep your amp from distorting. That seemed to have been the goal of the silver face to stay clean at loud volumes That's why Fender missed the boat. I remember when Mesa Boogie came out. Fender was late to the Distortion game. Seems they never caught up. But they kept making them crappy silverface amps till finally somebody woke up at fender LOL

I've got a 69 Twin Reverb that I absolutely adore. It's one of my most prized posessions. It's pretty beat up, too heavy to gig with, and too loud to play at a reasonable volume at home, but I'll never part with it.

Do you ever do videos of bass amp repairs? I would love to see the inside of an SVT

Yeah, I sometimes look at bass stuff. No SVTs yet.

One of the best investments I made for my shop is the Orange VT-1000 Valve Tester. Get some better 6L6's and convert that O/P tube balance into a real Bias control. When that Balance control was used, you could get a lot better quality U.S. Made tubes vs that Ruby stuff.

Hey Brad!! Thanks for awesome videos as usual. BTW, looks like someone intentionally cut navy blue wire at 3:05 in video. Lol Maybe someone was trying to isolate ground loops?

Great video. Very interesting 👍🍷. I know very little about amps and their electronics so most of what you said went way over my head. But I do have a similar amp….except it has “Pro Reverb” on it. I bought it second hand over 25 years ago and have played it at home ever since (using my Gibson LP and G&L ASAT). I’ve always loved the sound quality and have had no problems until recently when a loud hum/buzz sounds when I release the strings of the guitar. Unfortunately there are no amp repair people anywhere near me…..and now I’m so old I can’t move the thing! I don’t even know if it’s possible to buy tubes for it any more (if that’s the problem?) and if it’s possible for a complete amateur to replace them…..
