I was 18 the first time I got into a relashionship. I was a freshman at my university, she was 24 finishing her major. All good, she was a little more mature than me, sure, but everything was nice. In pre-school I had a male professor. My mom told me recently that many of the parents at the time were against having a male pre-school professor because it looked creepy. End of the story, he did nothing wrong and the parents no longer thought it was creepy.

I really find it interesting with the idea that even if people are uncomfortable with something, they're unwilling to say it. I remember reading an outstanding line about this in the book The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo which was said by the villain and it's honestly a great summary of a lot of people's mentality towards these things. The quote was: "You knew something was wrong but you came back into the house. Did I force you, did I drag you in? No. All I had to do was offer you a drink. It's hard to believe that the fear of offending can be stronger than the fear of pain. But you know what? It is." I think it really says something that some people would rather just deal with things or go along with something because they're afraid to offend someone they don't even know.

I've commented on Aba and Preach videos before. I'd like to reiterate a point I made previously. You know those conversations that hashtag activists are always talking about starting but never follow through on? These guys are having those conversations. This is so true. I began a relationship with the owner of my store. the first time in my life I approached a man, him being the owner had nothing to do with it, him being in “power” didn’t mean he took advantage. I Initiated It, and in the beginning he was very very hesitant. He was worried about how he texted me, how he spoke to me, everything. When he asked me to sign something to show consent, at first I was pissed. But after I had time to think about it, I understood, for all he knows I’m just trying to get him, sue him, use it against him. And that’s so shitty people have to worry about that simply because they aren’t attracted to someone who is on their level when it comes to employment. Or anything really.

Age of consent... I joined the Navy at 17 years old and turned 18 on my way back from the Persian Gulf. I was old enough to die for my country and pilot a 58 thousand ton Warship into combat, but not old enough to drink a beer Stateside? Also, I've met plenty of folks who were in their 50's who have less mental maturity than many 20 somethings; a test for mental maturity and aptitude would be great! When my son was a Senior in HS, we were at a recreational area and he saw some kids he knew from school, one girl who saw he and I talking approached and initiated conversation, when she found out I was his father she stated "I haven't seen any dads who look like you" with an expression which was difficult to take out of context... while flattered, it made me feel very uncomfortable; she was 18, however, not a road I had any desire to travel down, regardless of looks. Power dynamic... I used to know a guy who was in his 40's who seemed to be focused on 18 year old girls, and it was primarily about power; he often cited the Bible... out of context. With that said, growing up, there were many girls in their early to mid-teens who actively perused guys in their mid 20's to early 30's... and older; obviously for sex. Those females were thoroughly used by the time they reached 20 and those fellas were no where to be found. When I was in my early 30's I dated a girl who was 22, she had already graduated from college, yet had no world experience, we had nothing in common and it was difficult to have a functional conversation; she viewed the world through a completely different lens. She would do most anything I asked, and such could have been easily exploited. Grooming... I again reference the fella in his 40's who was focused on 18 year old girls. From what I understand, based on his own statements, he met these girls while they were under 18 and actively engaged in conversation for a year or more... essentially waiting for them to turn 18, so they were of legal age.

All I know is that when I'm speaking to my teenage little sister it is painfully obvious she is still a kid, she lacks the wisdom that comes with experience and age & all the shit that life throws at you because she's barely going to leave high school where essentially she has been protected and has zero real life responsibilities. Yes its absolutely bonkers that she can vote soon and go into student loan debt, but those are the things that forced me to grow up among other things that have happened in my life and family that we have all sheltered her from. You become an adult when your parents let go & you become aware of all the loss and pain you've been shielded from, when you have to work hard to obtain a degree/ career/ skill & you start paying your own bills, struggle financially or emotionally, its during those years that people start to come into who they are & where they stand spiritually or politically. I feel like I'm at a point in my life where I have gained the wisdom and knowledge to recognize toxic narcissistic men. I know what to look for, I can smell bullshit, see the red flags, she doesn't have that yet. I'd rather she grow up and gain that experience with people her own age rather than someone who is much older, has been hardened and matured by life and knows damn well she ain't there yet and will take advantage of that. Someone her age can hurt her too, but the difference is that they'll be growing up and learning about themselves at the same time, if they go in different directions more often than not they'll grow apart, like I did with my teenage bf during college. I'd assume a grown 30+ adult has a more concrete understanding of who they are, why would someone this age want to insert themselves into the lives of a barely legal young adult who has zero clue what the real world is like, who is still trying to figure out who they are, I know I wouldn't.

As a human science major, I have a lot of thoughts, data, and research on sexual exploitation, age, etc. My stance, I believe that 18 years of age should be mandated nationwide for both sexes and that no marriages between individuals under that age should be allowed (having grown up in a conversative community and seen the effects outside of research). Beyond that, understanding the age and developmental gap, unless there is an ethical power dynamic issue that would be of major concern where that individual that has control over a certain area of your life (ex. professor), they are free to sleep with any consenting adult. Part of being an adult, at 18 years of age, is that you are allowed to make what society deems to be "mistakes". You cannot build a society where you or public opinion determines what is best for another person who is an adult as they alone have that freedom (unless they are deemed incapable by the state due to their mental facilities).

I always took the low ages of consent as the state recognizing the fact that 16 year olds are having sex with EACH OTHER. I never took it as giving permission to older men.

I remember when I was a young boy in the 70's it came to light that my older cousin who was in high school was in a relationship with her High School teacher. They eventually married. Her mother flipped out and they didn't speak for a decade or more. As it turned out my cousin and her husband went on to have children, a family, successful careers each of them and just a couple years ago my cousin buried her husband of 40 years. They loved each other. Death was the only thing that parted them. So you can say a man in his late 20's or or in his 30's shouldn't be having a relationship with his 17 or 18 year old student, I would agree but if it happens and the motive is true love then who am I to knock anyone for being in love and having a healthy life long relationship.

I was in high school when I met my first husband. We talked to my mother and it was weird for her that I wanted to get married at 18 to someone who was 10+ years older. We were together for a decade until I divorced him. I wanted to get married so young because I wanted a family and career at a young age.

I work in daycare, and I wish it was more acceptable for men to work in childcare. I've had a hard time controlling my class, and a dad will walk in and immediately get them under control.

Although it is true that many countriees have an age of consent that is lower than 18. Those countries often have also a law that forbids sexual behaviour between adults and minors. The consent law than only really counts among minors.

So to put this into perspective- I was in a relationship with a girl who was 23 ( 22 at the time and I was 24) and the level of immaturity that was experienced from that relationship at the time was pretty astounding. Sure there were moments where I could have done better in some aspects but a lot of the things I saw I had never been exposed to before. Now I'm with a girl who's just turned 22- completely different walk of life and ideals to my ex girlfriend. I am now 26, almost 27; while it may not be as big of a "gap" as if I were 28 and she was 18, she is far more aware of herself and what she is driven by, she's maturer in comparison despite that everyone has their own map of reference. My point is, it doesn't matter about their age, it's about their experience of life and how they grow into the various responsibilities that they take on.

If you actually look at the study, it says that although men are most attracted to women in their 20s, they are less likely to pursue / be in a relationship with someone significantly younger than them, and are still more likely to be with someone around their age range. I feel the women answering were being considerate and more realistic about their answers (maybe reflecting on what they perceived to be okay to say, as it has long been a stereotype that women lose their 'value' by their late 30s and are less likely to be seen as attractive) because I highly doubt majority of women think a 50 year old is better looking than a man in his 20s-30s..

Yes, younger people can be more mentally mature and older people can be less so, but regardless of the maturity of either individual, the legality of the situation, and each one's ability to consent, if you as an adult are specifically seeking out minors it shows you are looking for someone more likely to be pliable and manipulated and that is predatory behavior. It's also probably the case that you're unable to mentally connect with people your own age because they see through your manipulative tactics.
