Two and a half years ago, when I went on a first date with my now boyfriend, I wore minimum makeup, powder, lipstick, light mascara. On our second date, I wore zero make-up, and I explained to him that I wanted him to see my face without any makeup. We have the most beautiful relationship. When I'm with him, ninety-five percent of the time I'm make-up free. Also, I'm black, and my hair is natural. At times, for a change, I'll blow it out straight, but I mostly wear it natural. I'm black, from the Caribbean, and my boyfriend is Italian American. My mother taught me to love myself, and in turn, I taught my daughter to love herself. Ironically my daughter is a professional make-up artist, and she goes make-up free a lot. She's comfortable with or without makeup. She cares for her skin, which is more important than the make-up. To each his own, I prefer not to condem people for living their life. Everyone walks different paths. We choose what we want, and keep it moving.

I am in agreement with everything you say here and everything you did when dating your boyfriend. I have always been makeup free with my husband (together 30 years) and on the rare occasions I wear a little bit he is completely thrown. lol He likes my regular face. My regular long, undyed, curly hair. My jeans and black tank top wardrobe. I agree with the importance of still caring for your looks in other ways. Taking care of your skin, keeping your hair in good condition, wearing clothes that fit nicely, all of those keep you looking your best whether you decide do makeup or not. SIMULTANEOUSLY, we know tons of done-up women and they are beautiful too. I know stylish dressers...good for them. Being a makeup artist is a cool job...so creative.

As a biracial girl with genetic dark circles, for me makeup was a way to not look like a raccoon 🤣 Not wearing makeup would raise questions like “Are you tired?” I would wear a minimal amount, just enough to look fresh but not a cake face. My gf right now won’t even let me look at her face when doesn’t wear make up. I’m not trying to brag or nothing but objectively she is very beautiful. Towards the end of high school, I had mild acne and I had to stop trying to cover it up. I would cry every night because I didn’t look the way I did with makeup on. So I decided that I was going to force myself to get used to how I looked without the concealer. Im thankful I did. Makeup is really cool and an incredible art form, but so many of us aren’t willing to admit that it really does damage us to wear it daily and rely on it so heavily to feel confident.

I find it so creepy too, not exactly sexualizing them but something in that realm. Of course just playing around fine, but kids with a full face going out and about is so weird. Maybe it’s because beauty and insecurity over it are more of an teen to adult feeling that kids don’t really understand yet. The way I've always felt about hair and makeup is as soon as you put it on, you're stuck managing it to look that way all day. With no make up and natural hair, you don't have to worry about that management, so yeah, I do think that make up makes women more self centered because the entire aspect of having makeup on and your hair done, makes you want to keep looking perfect because it's easy for that perfect look to get out of place, so you're constantly like, "Uh, does my hair look okay? Crap, I smeared my liner, I gotta fix it."There's something more freeing about not having to worry about that management. Going to a wedding, seeing everyone at Christmas, getting professional photos done where you want to look amazing, recitals, etc. I think there's tons of situations where it's worth it to get all dolled up but as far as managing hair and make up every day, it's a no for me.

@Zachary Lyons that’s not necessarily what she’s saying. In the past, i definitely used to not being able to go out without makeup because I thought I needed it. But now I go about my day to day without it and I’m comfortable without makeup now. I do on some occasions wear makeup for like a job interview and such but I don’t use it like I used to. And unlike before I don’t feel like I need it, it just a fun thing to do on occasions. Also makeup and being addicted to nicotine are completely different. You have to completely not participate in smoking if you want to stop using. But for makeup, a person can learn to control how they use it to the point where it doesn’t damage their self image.

To touch on the words "I do it for myself" if the person is ego driven then that statement is 100% correct for thar type of person because you do things to feed your ego and in return anything that feeds their ego makes them happy and that is a form of "self love" and "self validation" regardless of what it looks like to the world. If you are not ego driven receiving too much attention from wearing makeup doesn't make you feel good because it's not whom you truly are and you aren't going to feel comfortable having to keep it up for long periods of time and you end up feeling like "you're not your true self and you are living a lie"

Feel like I've experienced every side of this argument. I was never allowed to wear makeup so I started when I was 22 and no longer around my parents. It was really rough when I was a teen, struggling with acne and definitely insecure and definitely judged by other girls. When I did start wearing makeup I got a confidence boost, but it was short lived because I hadn't developed true confidence underneath. Started wearing too much makeup to compensate, and the. I realized what I was doing, cut back, and focused on developing true acceptance for my natural looks. That's when I started to feel - and therefore look more confident and beautiful. Now I am not dependent on makeup, but I do enjoy and women are still judged by looks, so there are certain situations where I know I have to wear makeup if I want to be fairly considered along with others. From the start, makeup has been a tool of seduction used by women. Seduction implies sexuality. So deep down, not wanting to have children using makeup is not wanting children to come closer to sexuality. To me, It sounds logical and has pretty good parenting behavior.

Aba, that shirt in the beginning is fly 💸 Edit now that I've watched the whole video: I'm a woman who really is on both sides of this and it was interesting hearing both perspectives. The perspective I feel like seemed to be missing on the "pro-makeup" side is the one that I (and many others) share, which is that doing my makeup is fun...like it's a way to spend time with myself and be creative on my face. And I have no issues with my natural bare face, I take good care of my skin and I'm perfectly comfortable to go out or even to work with or without makeup (and I, too, adopted a personal policy of no-makeup first dates because I just wanted to feel natural and comfortable). And sometimes I will do a full face at home alone with nowhere to go because I'm bored and I like playing in it (and I don't even take pictures for social media 😱). I just wish that even one of the people on the pro-makeup side would have said they do it because it's fun.

I'm glad I was though in hindsight.. early formative year and I think while any kid is still developing they should be taught to be comfortable and confident in their own skin as is, I learned that through the good and bad of those times in my younger years and now as a 24 year old woman I feel as comfortable and confident as is with makeup as without and when I do wear makeup it's more to compliment my features not to completely cover and reconstruct my face or appearance to something off the walls different

This was hard to watch. They basically all seem to acknowledge that unnatural beauty standards can be harmful for people, and they didn't waste any time pointing out harmful beauty standards in media. Then they flaunt the fact that no one on the internet has ever seen their actual face, and how great it is to be able to smooth out blemishes with a filter, or how depressing it is to go out and not have the "star power" and glam that makeup provides. Really disturbing imo, they're obsessed with image, recognize that is a result of false imagery they've been exposed to... And they go out and perpetuate that exact standard among their own friends, community or online group. It makes my head hurt that these people blame Hollywood's standards of beauty and yet they themselves are likely contributing to the issue even more, because they ARE the average person that another nobody is going to compare themselves against, and they're not able to be honest about their appearance.

I think it's very easy to lie to ourselves about why we wear makeup. In my early twenties I truly believed that I wore makeup because it was an artform and a form of self-expression. Then I was cast in play where the director insisted on no makeup for the show, and no makeup in rehearsals so we could get comfortable with it. Going from full face everyday to suddenly wearing no makeup for weeks, I realized very quickly that the true reason I wore makeup was because I straight up didn't like what I looked like without it. I was just lying to myself about why I wore it. I also found that even though I'm a cis woman, I felt less like a woman without makeup on. I found myself compensating by doing things like painting my nails more, or wearing more stereotypically feminine clothing. Definitely a great learning experience for me!

How do you know that your dependence on make-up didn't come about as a result of you using it for a prolonged period of time? That's to say, maybe when you started with it, you genuinely did it as a form of artistic expression, however, the more you used it and the possible confidence boost it came with, the more it shifted you acclimated to it such that the sudden shift back was jarring. I'm sincerely curious.

Interestingly, "The Lipstick Effect" was coined during the Great Depression coz wearing something trivial like lipstick really boosted women's moods and self-confidence at such a difficult time. Psychologically, wearing make-up can have that effect on your mindset, the same way a nice outfit or fresh haircut can enhance the way you feel/think. Your self-worth shouldn't be dependent on make-up (or anything else external that make us more attractive), but it can definitely be an asset to those who know how to wield it's benefits.

I didn’t “ wear” makeup as a kid but I played with it experimented with it. My mom probably bought me play makeup when I was 9-10 but before that I had access to makeup because I had older sisters so I probably used their stuff . I don’t think there is any harm as long as it’s not an obsession and the kid doesn’t wear makeup to get ready and go somewhere out in public. It’s a play game. Just like dressing up . We had many costumes at home princesses dinosaurs etc and I liked to play dress up it’s a creative outlet . And guess what I grew up to be a girl that barely wears any makeup because my mom barely wore if not any and she’s always reinforced to me that natural was always the best pick. So It stuck to me. I wore for the first time 14-15yo only mascara and concealer under my eyes. I tried 1 time in my life foundation and didn’t like the feel of it . Now I’m 25 the most I ever wear is mascara and concealer under my eyes. I keep my face bare but mind you, I do Have nice skin and always have had. I know I’m lucky and I am aware that some girls struggle with acne and blemishes. I would understand that they might want to cover up as adults to be seen more professional at work etc versus looking like a teenager. Like they said, it changes the way people treat you. But yeah I don’t see the problem with kids as long as it part of a healthy play dress up/makeup game. With my kid it’s a different generation nowadays but I plan on probably letting her wear mascara around teenage years 13-15 depending how she presents it to me and as long as it’s tasteful for her age. No foundation I’d rather enforce healthy skincare and try out importance on taking care of skin vs covering up if she does struggle with normal hormonal acne. Then when you are 17ish do whatever you want. Most of the time girls with really nice skin rarely feel like putting much on.

Yes I'm doing it to express myself in a way that makes me feel good about myself, but I am expressing myself to other people. I didn't spend 10 or 20 minutes every morning backcombing and spiking my hair for nobody to notice it. I'm going out of my way to present myself in a certain way. Hey Aba, here's my take on the first minute about makeup and womanhood: To me, it sounds like Makeup allowed Her (specifically- probably pre-trans) to physically/visually present as the woman she always felt she was on the inside as he was still a man. I don't think she meant it any deeper than that. However, as far as makeup being inherently feminine... there's a strong correlation suggestion this stereotype is true. Though makeup has unisex applications in media industries (tv, movies, music, news anchors, etc), in everyday life, makeup is usually utilised to enhance feminine features (eg. men transforming themselves into drag 'Queens'). Hetero-normative men do NOT wear makeup in regular, everyday settings while doing their blue or white collar jobs, during sports, buying groceries, going to the movies or amusement park. So Makeup is attached to women, transwomen, gay and effeminate men (previously rudely called 'girly' men). So... *shrug* -- just my 2c

Very strong in saying that kids should never be introduced to suggestive clothing or those that have no difference from what provocative adults wear. Lets let kids be kids and keep their innocence and this can well be displayed by clothing them appropriately. I think people think they do stuff for themselves, but actually it's because they want to feel accepted. But most people don't realise this is why they're doing things. You can say the same for many things e.g. you might think you're studying and working hard "for yourself" but actually it's because you want to be more socially accomplished so you can reap the social rewards of that and be admired etc. You might think you're painting for your own artistic pursuits, but likely you hope to share it with others and receive feedback or compliments. Similarly, someone who does makeup in their room and doesn't show anyone may be doing it simply for the artistic self-expression, but if it's to make themselves look more attractive, they're probably doing that because they've subconsciously assimilated messages from society that being attractive leads to greater social success. Even people who seek riches often are doing it for social reasons. We're social animals after all, we just kid ourselves into thinking we are independently minded 😬 Being accepted by society is basically about having a sense of security, the same as having money is. Having social connections can be more powerful than having savings in the bank. There's little difference really between people who do things purely for the money and people who do things purely to gain social status. Money and social status are two sides of the same coin (money is a social construct after all).

Jordan Peterson discusses the intentions behind makeup (when discussing the me too movement) and he says that the intention of makeup is to mimic the sexual arousal eg how blood travels to particular areas in that circumstance flushing the cheeks etc. So on those grounds I agree that children should not wear makeup. It’s not a good idea to give them the impression they should wear makeup from childhood. Perhaps it could have an impact on self esteem later on, also children should not be sexualised, they should be kids. If a child is “putting on some lipstick” like mummy because they want to be like her then I think that’s harmless, just as they want to help vacuum and other things they see a family member doing. They should not be encouraged to hold the belief that their esteem is related to the way they look. Be healthy and your skin will glow and you won’t need makeup. 👌🏼💕 I had bad acne as a teen and I wish I hadn’t been placed so much importance on my skin.

The saying “I wear makeup for myself” is genuinely true for some people and not true at all for others. There’s times when I don’t wear makeup for a week cause I like my bare face. Then other times I want to wear makeup for the sole purpose of just wanting to wear it because I like it. I’m constantly seen going out with a bare face and going out with makeup. I feel as though social media has a hold on a lot of people where they feel that they have to have this unrealistic appearance of themselves to be beautiful. All the makeup and all the filters are causing gorgeous people to doubt themselves because they're not 100% flawless. Flaws are wonderful because they tell a story about who you are. My stretch marks may not be attractive but they tell a story of who I am and that I am a mother. I may have bags under my eyes because I was up all night with a sick child. My hair may be turning gray but that's just because I'm aging into an even more beautiful version of myself without filters needed. Be proud of you. Easier said than done but it's possible.

I personaly see makeup as an accesorie and something relaxing to do. It's like getting a hair cut, doing a different hairstyle, getting a piercing or tattoo, or choosing my clothes. I don't wear makeup because I don't like myself but because I like makeup itself. But there are women who have insecurities or are even mentaly unstable and wear makeup to feel better about themselves (I don't see that as necesarily bad, because makeup can be a little help for self-esteem and maybe in the future you won't feel as bad). Like when you have a red af pimple and you don't feel good looking like that and just prefer to hide it until it goes away. Makeup itself has nothing negative, what can make the situation look bad are the people who wear it for their reasons behind.

On the question about kids and makeup : Im 30 years old so i have been around some time and ever since even i was a kid there were ways to support but at the same time defuse the need of using makeup for kids. What i mean by this is that there are even to this day things called 'kids makeup' which is a less pigmented but a bit glittery version of cream makeup. I think there are stages you can take to let them experience it if they are interested , for example some of them are already getting excited if you paint their nails once even if its a barely visible color. or just buy clip in hairlocks. Generally i feel like kids already have enough to experience and enjoy without makeup and even for myself the idea of makeup or shaving, getting better looking eyebrows first came from seeing my classmates doing such things. The crowd they are in as children is very influential, they look at friends , parents and teachers, combine it with their own few views of things and decide to do some of them. I dont think its healthy or unhealthy to experience makeup i think its just a stage in a life which generally should come at a later age, because one thing brings about the other, and for myself, the age of makeup, getting new outfits and putting punk rock bands on my walls was a very different time from being a very young kid learning the secret about Santa Claus.

Hey recently former kid here, being in middle and high-school was a struggle. The girls there were all wearing suggestive clothes just tame enough for the dress code 2 not be violated if not just saying fuck it and doing it anyways which did happen.

Especially in today’s society.. we didn’t have social media when I was a a kid. I was like 16 when MySpace became relevant. Yes, back then we all still had insecurities because we would point out our own flaws and compare ourselves to other girls we knew. But now days... these kids are growing up with the internet and they’re exposed to so much more. They see all these influencers that look perfect and they want to be that way. It seems to be a lot worse for kids these days than it was 20 years ago and I think there are a lot of adults who don’t really realize this. Most things these days are extremely contradictory though lol

What exactly is perfection in terms of beauty? I think each person has their own opinion on the type of looks they find attractive. And remember, good looks don't make up for a horrible personality.

if you need to do something in particular or change something about yourself in a drastic matter to "showcase" anything... then you're not really that thing, are you. You just want to be perceived as such. Because you feel as if you are not good enough the way you are and through validation of others, you get the boost in confidence that you yourself lack.

Make up sometimes is used to sexualize young kids. Playing with makeup is fine. I played with make up as a kid, but my parents were very conscientious of what makeup I was wearing and I wasn't wearing it outside of the house. Remember, a child's perception is very different from an adults. I wear makeup when I want to look a little extra, but I don't need it and I don't want my daughter to think she needs it.

@Sleepy Celeste It's because they're on the stage. The lights wash out your face, so if you want to be able to see someone's features from the audience, they need to be wearing makeup. It's not about making them look like an adult or sexualizing them. At least that's the original intent. TV/movie makeup is very different from stage makeup. So when they put these kids on TV in stage makeup it looks suuuper creepy. I also agree that in some cases it's lost it's original purpose and really is just used to turn them into baby barbies.... Though after watching this video and reading a bunch of comments I'm starting to think wearing makeup at dance recitals may be part of why I don't feel the need to wear it now. As someone else said, to me makeup is a costume. And that's how I always saw it when I was a kid. At dance recitals or at fairs/parties with face painting, makeup was always presented to me as something you did for fun or for special occasions. Not as something that you need when you're just being "you".

My mom is very traditional the only time I was allowed to wear make up was my matric dance "prom dance". Sometimes I feel like I'm doing something wrong because all my female friends know about concealer and all these other stuff and i don't. Sometimes it makes me feel like I'm not woman/girly enough cuz I'm not obsessed with these

the reason i never got into makeup was because of all the jokes i saw about women taking off their makeup for the first time in front of their boyfriends. i never wanted that to be me so i just kept it to a minimum and cleared my skin.

I wore makeup maybe 4 times in my life (only 20 though) and I hated it everytime. Feels like a mask and family members said I looked better with it, which was hurtful cause I felt like I wasn't enough without it. I also don't think kids should wear makeup but that's just me.

I've never liked the look of makeup on most people (only when it's done so well I don't even notice it... But then you get close and see a fine layer smeared over everything, yuck). I'm a sucker for a bit of eye shadow though to be fair. My gf doesn't wear makeup either and I swear she has some of the most vibrant healthy skin I've ever seen, it's soft and smooth and has a nice rosy color around the cheeks. Meanwhile to my horror it seems like many of the people wearing makeup regularly have AWFUL skin that's rough and cracked and all pock marked. I assumed that was the reason they wore makeup in the first place, but my gf says it's likely the makeup that damaged their skin!? What the heck are people doing to themselves if that's true? Covering up nice skin with gross products that leave you horribly scarred by age 30..? Is this even true or just something she says to justify no makeup lol? Not that she even needs justification, but it just seems crazy to me that the makeup itself could be so damaging!
