It is an exaggeration to say that Prague is the third largest Slovak city. However, more than 100 thousand Slovaks live here. What brings them to our metropolis and why do they stay here? That's what we found out in this episode of our Living Prague series.
Historically, Prague was the capital of the common state of Czechs and Slovaks. And the proximity remained even after the division of Czechoslovakia. The fact that Slovaks are the largest community of foreigners in the metropolis proves it. What attracts them to Prague?
Three reasons to move here
If you ask local Slovaks what brought them to Prague, you will most often get three reasons.
1. Education: the largest group of foreign students at Prague universities? Yes, Slovaks. There is no need to pay tuition fees, the quality of education is top-notch and the language barrier is almost non-existent for our eastern neighbours.
2. Work: Lots of opportunities, often better paid positions than in Slovakia, more possibilities to build a career... And again, virtually no cultural barriers or prejudices.
3. Relationship: Many Slovak citizens who study and work in Prague will logically meet their life partners here. And so they will stay here permanently.
Besides, Prague attracts not only Slovaks because of its stunning architecture, friendly atmosphere, one of the best public transport in the world and many other things that make life in the capital city more pleasant.
What about halušky?
There is, of course, a large Slovak community in Prague, which, for example, regularly organises various events under the banner of the Slovak Institute.
However, what the metropolis lags behind a bit is Slovak food. It is not easy to find really honest food that would make representatives of our eastern neighbour feel at home under the Tatras. But there are honorable exceptions. If you get a craving for halušky, go to the U Skřetů restaurant on Letná, which specialises in Slovak cuisine.
And finally, a question for Slovak viewers - what do you like best about Prague and why did you choose to live in this city? Let us know in the comments!
