Kevin Peter Hall deserves all the respect in the world for his performance as the Predator. His movements became the norm and he essentially helped create this awesome creature that we all still love to this day.
By far the best version of the Predator. It's movements were perfect. Such a sad story on how he died. He should be still playing the Predator to this day.
Such a tragic story but I remember being TERRIFIED as a kid watching this because of his human like movements. No cgi. Just a big dude in a scary costume. RIP buddy
The Predator was getting a taste of his own medicine from Dutch and knew he was a worthy opponent so he gave him a fair fight as an equal by taking his weapons (except the knives at the end of this clip) and mask off. It added more to the Predator as a character and the morals of his kind rather than as another villain who mindlessly killed everyone.
Good point. The role reversal where Dutch becomes the invisible hunter and the Predator becomes frustrated and a little scared shows how good the writing is in this film. Even for such a simple story.
Predators do have a sense of honor for worthy prey. When a Predator claims a human's skull and spine, it may be because that human proved themselves a capable adversary. Billy, King Willy and Lambert all faced Predators in hand-to-hand combat and had their spines taken.
I imagine that people who saw this in the theaters when it first came out were freaking out over the reveal of the Predator's face. I mean, what a face!
My dad saw this on theaters back then and when the predator unmasked he said he thought the predator's face looked like a crab's face and that he suddenly craved crab's soup at that moment lol. One of my dad's favourite films till date.
They did one thing wrong, in the theater version at the beginning of the film, a space ship was shown entering the earth giving the information that the Predetor is an alien
I love Dutch's reaction he's literally, unwittingly and I dare say unwillingly, made first contact with a being not of this world and his immediate reaction is to call it an "ugly motherfucker" which is quite frankly brilliant considering this thing only travelled here to kill people and nothing more. I love how he doesn't beg, nor does he back away from it even though its a foe he has zero chance of beating in a fair fight.
Gotta give the writers props for giving the villain an actually believable reason for not just blowing the hero's head off once he's at their mercy. Most of the time it's just plot-induced stupidity; here, it's simple honor.
0:47 this is the best Predator design of all. The lip movements are extremely fluid and organic looking. All predators after the 1986 classic looks very stiff and robotic in their mouth movement. The side cheeks couldn't do a full collapse when the jaw is closed. RIP Stan Winston you are such a legend
Agreed 100%, this creature looked alive. The City Hunter from Predator 2 was almost as good, but as you mention, there are some shots where the animations look a little stiff. Post Predator 2, the practical FX take a leap off a cliff.
As iconic and memorable as the T-800 is, Dutch is easily the best character Arnie ever played. He isn’t just charismatic and badass, he is also extremely intelligent, very vulnerable and most impressively, he grows as a character. Dutch knows strength and skill won’t beat the Predator. He needs to outsmart it. He gathers as much intel on his opponent as possible, deducing a lot of information on pure observation alone, and then uses the clever tactics to defeat the creature based on that intel. Even then, he isn’t perfect. Most of Dutch’s strategies fail due the Predator’s own intelligence and ingenuity, which helps illustrate how much of a genuine threat it is, and such mistakes result in serious consequences, namely the death of his teammates. However, he learns. With each defeat and each setback, Dutch gathers more intel. He learns from his mistakes. Even when he loses all his teammates and most of his supplies and weapons, he makes one last attempt to defeat the Predator. Not just because it is his only means of salvation, but because he finally knows what to do, he finally knows how to beat it. He takes what little resources he has and creates a battle plan that leaves no stone unturned. He’s so confident, in fact, he actually invites the Predator to battle with a loud war cry. The final battle commences and after a long, brutal struggle, Dutch ultimately, and deservedly, emerges victorious. Arnie will forever be remembered as the T-800, but there’s no denying Dutch was his best role. He isn’t just a super cool, unstoppable killing machine, he’s a skilled strategist with relatable weaknesses which he gradually learns to overcome. There's a reason the Predator only took off his mask in front of him and no else. He was truly the best the squad had to offer.
GREAT POST. I can still remember sneaking into the theatre to see this as a kid and seeing this scene. We were in shock. The whole crowd was quiet as mice - back then nobody EVER seen the HERO take an ass kicking like this and find a way to survive it. Truly great writing, directing and acting from Arnold himself. Everything was firing on all cylinders here.
Originally, Dutch was supposed to be able to beat the Predator man to man, but Arnold outright refused saying "I have to be smart to beat the monster!" instead of just being the buff macho that they initially intended.
Great movie, I truly think that, for maximum effect, people should first watch it without reading the synopsis and without watching the spacecraft in the opening scene. Everything else in this movie is simply perfect 😍
Well, the Yautjas(predator's name species) are noble warriors, they hunt serveral species in differents planets and worlds in order to become great hunters and warriors, also they have a strict code of honor, which in this case, dutch was a "worthy opponent" to the predator because he destroys his camuflage suit all by himself, so he removes everything to fight equaly like warriors, but the Yautjas when they are defeat, they need to die with honor, so theres 2 ways to die to them: Or by you opponent or in a selfdestruct sacrifice.
The predator gave dutch a chance to run from the explosion by manually setting the timer. Dutch is worthy and therefore honourable. note how Dutch was about to end the predators life and decided not to. Honor in the best to represent humanity. Dutch saved humans from extinction
0:32 - and 2:47 too . Special respect and respect for sound engineers! The sound of the predator's Vidin just changed an octave higher and stayed on the same note!... although one more sound was added and everything fits.!
At first I didn't like that the fight was seen through the eyes of the yautja, then I understood director Mctiernan's intention, sometimes it is better to show less and leave the rest to the imagination, like in the movie Jaws. But seeing the protagonist being brutally beaten with those hooks to the body, spitting blood without being able to defend himself and only being able to escape moaning in pain and the yautja following him, breaking the branches in pursuit, shows how helpless the Dutchman looks and how useless it is to fight. melee with that monster. Excellent script and images.
I went to see this movie in the cinema when it was released in 1987 and the surround sound was a spectacular experience ... watching this movie on TV is far from enjoying it in the cinema ..
@@hokutoshinken-chrisarmstro131 I first saw it in a packed theater in Pasadena, CA. We all gasped in astonishment and horror when it roared at him with those open mandibles.
@@LITTLE1994 Exactly, and it's even crazier how well this film has held up over the years. I never would've thought that in 2020 people would still think this movie is awesome.
The fact that Kevin Peter Hall - the predator was actually so tall made the fight scenes real good unlike now where the villain are made to look bigger by graphic effects.
All that sequence of Predator just taking is off the mask is so perfect. It's something today's CGI soulless marvel capeshit could never hope to recreate.
I will never forget my dad giving me, my twin brother, and older sister the VHS of this movie. I was transported when I seen the predators face for the first time. And even still to this day get chills seeing it.
Watching this as a kid in the 90's and realising tht the Predator had a code of conduct: that it wasnt just a standard villian blew my teenage mind. That it respected its 'prey' and wanted to fight Dutch on somewhat equal terms still gives me goosebumps. I remember thinking "Feck Arnie going to get his butt kicked.. and he did! Awesome film then and awesome film now.
The Predator looks like he evolved from a species of crabs based on his face lol. Like it took millions and millions of years for some crab-like lifeform to grow similar to a human in physiology and brain.
The Punch that Arnold Gave to the *PREDATOR* AT 1:16 ...IS SIMPLY AWESOME...ARNOLD GOT FURIOUS COZ THIS PREDATOR WAS AT THE UPPER HAND ON HIM MOST OF THE TIME SO ARNOLD JUST GAVE A FURIOUS PUNCH TO THE PREDATOR'S FACE....
Damn, I didn't realize it back then but it's almost absurd how tall the Predator is compared to Dutch.... Arnold has the physique of a bodybuilder, and that thing makes him look small.
The predator was like : " The music theme really inspired me to do the killings . Everytime , before I went for human hunting, I would listen to this music theme. It would give me the extra theresteron inside me".
I can’t really think of another film that so successfully teases the creature, then has not one but two satisfying reveals, each more than matching the build up to those final moments.
Not only does this film have one of the best creature reveals but it does such a superb job of being an action movie that descends into a horror film as it progresses. And here at the climax we see Mr. Universe himself facing off against a creature that could easily break him in half. Notice the detail they put in of the Predator snapping tree branches with its fists, I bet Dutch suffered some broken bones from the pounding he got.
With the Predator's incredible strength, Dutch wouldn't had stood a chance in unarmed combat against the Predator. The Predator would had no doubt beat him to death.
