The sounds of you prepping the wood is so oddly satisfying. So soothing. Thank you. 🙏🏾🖤

Wow! You make your own boards!

Yes! For as many paintings as I've done, this has saved me a ton of money. A big 4 x 8 foot sheet costs like 16 dollars.

Hey wait, how do you move so fast? Coffee! No... Oh you speeded up the film. I'm smarter than I look.

Hi, Mr. Larriva! I am a beginner artist. I also make my own hardboard painting panels. Lately I have been reading so much conflicting info on hardboard prep; that it HAS to be untempered (or some say ONLY use tempered board), that it MUST be sealed with GAC-100 on all sides before gesso (or that gesso does a good enough job on its own, etc.) It looks like you used tempered board and just gesso, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on the subject? I was loving how cost effective and easy making panels was, but all this conflicting info has left me confused.

Not to jump on Jon’s toes but I have spent seemingly forever on the internet trying to find the exact same answer. But only found one answer that really made sense to me. ‘Paint whatever you want onto whatever you want.’ The final image is what is important. After you sell 50 paintings you can work on finding a surface that will outlast generations of people. But you will never paint enough paintings if you spend forever looking for the perfect brush, panel, canvas, paint, etc. Hope this helps. I know it helped me the first time I heard it.

I don't know the answer. To me, my art isn't so important that it must live on in physical form for centuries upon centuries. If it does become that valuable to someone, they will likely find a way to preserve it. The biggest threats to oil paintings are prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and being bad oil paintings. If no one will rescue my work from being thrown in the dumpster when I'm gone, it really won't matter what it was painted on.

LarrivaArt Thank you for your thoughts! They have assuaged some of my doubts. Yours as well, Michael! Glad to hear I'm not the only one going crazy over this. Perhaps I'm overthinking and just need to get to painting more! Thank you all.

Hello, I have worked with this type of material and I can say that any material sufficiently adsorbent with a good layer of gesso can be used for painting., i do the same process as in the video

What grade sand paper do you use and do you cut the boards to a standard size to perhaps be framed later?

I use a medium grade for sanding the boards and a fine grade for sanding the gesso. I generally cut standard sizes. 9 x 12 inch, 8 x 10, 5 x 7, and so on.

Is this plain regular MDF?

This is hardboard, also known as Masonite. It's harder and denser than MDF, though you could use that too.
