November 1st is Self-Portrait Day. As usual, I'm using oil paints on a primed hardboard panel. The colors I'm using are Titanium White, Indian Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Napthol Red, Phthalo Green, and Phthalo Blue. I'm also using some solvent-free gel. Overall, this took about an hour.

I really like the way to paint. Just pushing in the forms and colors. Are there any guides on how to learn this technique? I watched your videos and tried to copy your steps, but it's really tough.

Thanks. The technique goes by many names: wet-on-wet, alla prima, direct painting, premier coup. These terms might help you find what you're looking for. If you can afford it, I'd recommend Richard Schmid's book Alla Prima. Thanks. Yes, my camera is on the tripod you see at the beginning. I now use an LED shop light suspended from the ceiling above the table for light.

Generally, I try to keep the paint thick, but to help with the pliability I add solvent-free gel. The gel does add some gloss.

Thanks. I'm mostly using Gamblin 1980 - their marble filled student grade - because it saves me some money when painting thickly. If you don't paint thick, I'd recommend something else. The thinner one paints, the more important pigment density becomes.

Hi. The method I'm using is called alla prima, premier coup, or direct painting. This is painting wet-in-wet, all at once. Style is subjective, but I like to float between impressionism, realism, and expressionism.

This was 1 hour. I can't look at a piece for more than 1 or 2 hours at a time. Sometimes I'll find something that should be fixed days later, but generally the primary painting for something like this is about an hour.
