44 years ago I did my first canning on a kerosene 2 burner stove, on a boat. I didn't know any better, we were getting ready to sail home from New Zealand and needed some shelf stable meat(there wasn't any in the stores there). I was very careful and we were lucky. I've come a long way, better resources and you tube. My next canning was a variety of electric stoves. I found the cadco, thought I'd died and gone to canning heaven. Used a double stack presto with good results, I was at sea level then. I'm now at altitude and lucky to have a propane stove. I still take the cadco in the rv. You need to use an electric outlet without any other appliance and if you need an extension cord use a heavy duty one and the weight guage. Thanks for the great info, you have brought me a long way baby!

Any kind of appliance like this that plugs into a standard outlet in the USA is going to top out at 1800 watts, or around 6100 btu due to limitations of 120v, 15 amp circuits in homes. The Cadco is listed as 1500 watts, so it only puts out 5100 btu. A "big" burner on a standard glass top range is going to be more like 18,000 btu, and gas ones can be even higher, so this is why the Cadco takes so long to heat. Any device like this is going to take a while to heat given the limitations of the US residential electrical system.

I have a Cadco 8-inch coil hot plate (it says it’s a commercial model on bottom) that I got because my tall Presto and All American canners wouldn’t fit under my microwave oven hood. I’ve never had a problem getting either one of them up to 15 pounds and keeping them there for a full session. Once fully up to pressure I usually even need to turn the heat down a bit.

I have a kitchen downstairs in my old, old, house - it has the tiniest range down there and I'm looking at something without buying a whole new full size option . . . I have Presto - which I do not like, AA - several sizes and electric - would like to know if this exact model would work you think based on your experience. I can only buy absolute needs these days as we are on a very limited income now.

@@marilynweber7957 I’m just over 1,000 feet above sea level. I can’t speak for someone up in the mountains, but my commercial coil model (not cast iron plate like Leisa tested) hasn’t failed me yet. My water bath canner fits on the stove under the microwave and is one of those really big pots that weighs a ton when full of water and jars, so I’ve always used it on the stovetop; I can’t say how well it would do on the little Cadco. Good luck with whatever you decide on!

I think this is a great option for me as I tend to 'can the sales'. Sometimes that happens in the summer. I like the idea of canning in the summer outside rather than taking up valuable real estate in the freezer until colder months and heating up the house to can in the heat. I used to live in LVNV and learned to cook and keep the heat OUTSIDE. AMEN! Sweet baby Jesus-outside!!

I've been using cast iron on multiple glad top stoves for about 30 years. Nothing has ever gone wrong! I also have only been canning on my glass tops, and never have had a problem. Every glass top stove can hold my weight. I weigh almost 300lbs. So I've proven the idea that cast iron, steel, and canning with huge canners, completely filled, and it always has worked no problem.

THANKS for the caveat on the All American! I have the giant thing that holds 14 quart jars, and I've never used it once b/c of the prima donna glass cooktop. People in a couple of FB canning groups were singing the praises of the Cadco CSR3T (single coil burner) for pressure canning a few years ago. I bought one ($179 then, now $203 at Amazon), used it TWICE before the temp control knob lost its little mind. It spins freely & seems to be stuck on high. Cadco would NOT offer any assistance, using the out that they "don't advertise it for canning use." Indeed, the instructions explicitly say NOT to use any pot that overhangs the burner. So, be sure to check Cadco's "out" of not recommending for canning! I now have a $55 Cuisinart cast iron burner thing I use to heat up water for water bath canning. It takes about 2 HOURS to get the water almost to boiling & I have to transfer to a prima donna burner to get & keep a consistent boil for timing processing. I've done a LOAD of pressure canning in my Nesco units. Gonna have to either get a camp stove or sell my All American :(

We bought a Cadco so I could run 2 canners at the same time. The Cadco takes a lot longer to heat up, but once it did it was hard to regulate at the lower temp and keep it steady. But, if I have to hot pack, I use it to heat the food I'm going to can in my stove canner. It's about 4 yrs old, so maybe the new ones are better. Just my own experience.

I bought one just for canning, but I also tested my camp stoves for canning. One did not work at all and could not get high enough heat. Some Coleman stoves can work; the large Camp Chef via propane works excellent. Having a big enough solar system to run this is a great idea. I was freezing a lot, but now I am canning it instead. The key is test it before you need it. I just sold the one stove that would not work for pressure canning.

I live in GA... about 3-4 hours from Panama City Beach and about 2 1/2-3 hours from Tallahassee. I have tried to call different places, look up online, and call the extension office (which never called me back). I want to make sure I know the right pressure to attain for attempting to can. Thank you for any suggestions you might have! 😊

@@RobinPurvis34if all of your jars seal properly as they cool provided that you are using fresh new lids and not used ones but you can sometimes get a few bad lids. If they're bad they usually will not seal, and you will have siphoning of food or liquids from your jars even though you filled them to the proper height, used the tool to remove any bubbles, and you wiped the rims off with Vinegar. Sometimes all jars will not pop and seal all at the same time. Some can take longer than others. If they don't seal, you will need to reprocess them all over again immediately or consume the contents within 24 hours of the failure but make sure you store them in the refrigerator until you consume the contents of the failed jars.

I am canning potatoes, I have a glass top stove, and 2 Mirro canners. They only hold 7 quarts each. I haven't had a problem in the last 30 yrs canning on it. Another option is a turkey fryer on the porch, I have done this when the humidity is high and I don't want my kitchen to be unbearably hot. I did can carrots over an open fire, it was an experiment, the trick is to have a huge cast iron skillet and a trivet to hold it up to be able to feed the fire. I turned the skillet upside down on the trivet (with legs) and placed my canner on the bottom of the skillet. The cast iron skillet did distribute the heat evenly. Keeping a small flame under the skillet was challenging, but doable. The carrots did just fine but a lot of work.

I didn't think my Pressure Canner could be used on my electric coil stove and could not find a reasonable outdoor propane burner solution with low enough BTU's as well as, having to put out an exhorbitant amount of money for the cost of a propane tank and the propane and regulator, and the proper size of burner to support the diameter of my Pressure Canner so I started searching online for an electric digital Pressure Canner. I ended up purchasing the Carey Smart Canner (same as the Nesco one but one is often priced about $10 to $20 higher than the other at any given time on the Amazon website) that was more cost effective. I really wanted the Presto Precise Digital Pressure Canner but could not justify spending twice the amount of money as the Nesco or the Carey Smart Electric Pressure Canner, and I've had good results using it; however you are only able to pressure can small amounts per session because it's a 9-quart pressure canner vs. the 12-quart Presto Precise Digital Pressure Canner. I live above 4,000 feet and the Carey/ Nesco Pressure Canners come with both a black 10 lb. weight to be used at Sea level, and a 15 lb. weight to be used at higher elevations when pressure canning. My elevation requires the use of the green 15 lb. weight even when I use it for pressure cooking meats. It also has the ability to brown meats prior to pressure cooking, and to also use it as a slow cooker. So far I love it, and haven't had any problems with it, and I saved money going that route versus buying an outdoor cooktop propane camp stove with all of the other required items to make it function plus it's a lot quieter, and doesn't heat up my kitchen on hot days. It's also very user friendly. After watching some RU-vid reviews of comparison against the Presto Precise Digital Pressure Canner and realizing that it is much bigger in size and weight I have to admit that I'm glad I chose to purchase the Carey Smart Canner instead.

The only stove I have had for the past 7 years is a butane camp stove. I do all my canning on that little one burner stove. Pros: It works anywhere, so portability is 100%. It works if the electric is out, we have a lot of storms where I live and electric is a luxury we don't always have. Cons: It does go through the butane cans quickly, and I usually have to replace the fuel in the middle of the canning process. It is important to make sure it is level, if using this outdoors, check it. Also, the temperature knob is very touchy, and there does not appear to be a "low" option with the burner. I keep it turned as low as possible, and it works fine. That would lead me to believe the pressuring up a larger canner would not be a problem, but I am unsure of the weight the stove can handle. I only have a 16 quart canner.

My 33year old range has these eyes. I told my. Husband that it is my coffin buddy. Lol. To learn to can w the eye, just first can some water. And watch the pressure. Yes, they remain hot even after turning off.

Thank you so much for another idea. Are there any propane setups you like? Midwest storms love to take out the electricity . Unfortunately my glasstop is a no canning zone. Thankfully I have friends with gas who also love to can. It Would be nice not to haul all my stuff all over the place to can.

I was researching this over a year ago. I found information online stating that it's not safe to use outdoor burners above 10,000 to 12, 000 BTU's max because it can cause damage to your Pressure Canner. If you really want to use a propane one, I was only able to find that the 2-burner Camp Chef stove would fit the specs to use for canning outdoors safely without ruining your Pressure Canner.

I have a glass top stove so I told hubby about the cadco but it didn’t fit the budget. He ended up getting me a cusimax single burner. My forjar pressure canner fits on it I’ve just got to do a test run. I did notice the single burner got really hot when we did the burn the oils off of it. I think I’ll use it outside just to be safe

Thanks for the video! I've been looking at this burner for awhile. Wondering if the steam canner will work and not damage the bottom pan of the steam canner since it's so thin compared to a regular waterbath canner.

I've used this type of burner for the last two years and it's worked fine. I had the coil version and the something in it eventually died from the heat being reflected down. I couldn't turn the heat down and I think it was building up too much pressure in the canner.

Pressure canning on electric will take longer to get up to temperature. It will also take a little practice to find the sweet spot for the regulator. I have a GE stove that I just bought and it works fine for canning. My old one did too. I did buy a special burner for canning that sits a little higher off the stove. I think it works better.

How do you use your GE for canning? My sister bought us one last year, and if has those sensitive temperature burned... which we hate. Also didn't think that the separate canning burners from Amazon would work on it either. I have a 23 quart Presto....still in the box kit used. How can I get my canner to work on the GE stove? Thanks for any help you can offer! 😊

@@RobinPurvis34Read back through the thread of comments. Someone else mentioned the same problem with those sensitive burners on their stove. I'm not sure what you are talking about but someone else answered them on your same question. They mentioned something about purchasing a different burner option from an appliance store or the Home Depot or possibly maybe a Lowe's but that person said something about having to check to see if the manufacturer suggests using a different type of burner. You probably have to consider if it would void your warranty. Good luck with that.

I have an induction cooktop (and, therefore, have an induction compatible presto canner). Because I don't want to take up the "stove" while canning, I use an induction hob for pressure canning (Precision Nuwave - my mother bought it for me off a late night infomercial 😏). I have no idea how long it takes a gas stove to get a canner to pressure but mine seems to take forever - 40 minutes maybe. Granted, my altitude requires 15 lbs and I use a weight/jiggler. Other than that, it works GREAT!

Was looking for a propane option in case no electric or gas for generator in a long term outage and need a nonstop canning session with whats in the freezers. This could work with a gas generator. A decent amount of solar is just too pricey and need sun.
@deborahruth5072
@deborahruth5072 9 дней назад
That is too bad because I do have to use 15 lb of pressure with the Presto jiggler. I have a 20 year old Maytag Gemini glass top electric stove and I am able to pressure can and waterbath can on it. The glass top does get hot but I don't put anything else on it unless I am pressure canning meat. Then I do put a caste iron skillet opposite the canner to help disperse the heat off of the glass top.
