Been in the music biz for over 40 years, this young guy knows what the heck he’s talking about. I can sense in a second when someone tries to fake pro audio...John is the real deal and I’m going to turn on more of my people to his channel. Class act 👍

@Chuck Juice. Mr. Chuck, I started off as a performing musician & gradually got into audio production & engineering. So, my radar is always "tuned" for good learning resources. Over the years, have you discovered any good written (or multi-media) material that explains the fundamentals of running pro sound-reinforcement? (I'm particularly interested in learning more about proper power distribution).

This is such a wonderful series! I don't have any aspirations to run a production company, but as an aspiring performer, it's super interesting to see the technical side of production outside of the "speakers-on-sticks" approach I see in bars and other small venues.

Woo I love these videos you are showing the real deal not what others show you are taking it to the next level. I got about 500 invested in cables so far just for Dj'ing lifetime cables couple 100 footers bunch of 50 30 20 and 10 footers for different size venues all mogami gold . Working on getting more equipment like more subs I got 4 pairs of passive Behringer vs1220 and to inuke 6000 wich is only 1200 watts @2ohm not a lot of power but it does reach out there .

I myself have a small little PA I use for whatever its needed ( 2 SRX835P and 2 PRX518S but upgrading subs soon) but work for a decently sized production company in my area. Its always great to work with Venue 48s and bringing in some RCF TTL or VerTec systems to fly. I must say why not A Midias M32 instead ?

Learning on an analog first is definitely the way to go, digital consoles are very expensive so not everyone has one. Once you’ve mastered an analog console then you can look into a digital console, there’s many different options, the X32 is one of the most affordable digital consoles on the market. Some of the ones that I definitely recommend are the Yamaha QL5, if you have the money it’s definitely worth it, it has so many useful features, and it will definitely make your job easier, that’s the cheaper model in the QL/CL series, it’s made for theatrical and general purposes, however the CL5 is a more expensive model, but it is specifically designed for running concerts.

John...I use the little Behringer X18 (desktop version as you know) as a controller for my computer audio (8 channels counting the sub) and 2 ham radios. I use two different mics with the radios, a Beta 58 and an MXL 990 condenser. I did FOH mixing for about 20 years. These little Behringer boxes are amazing. To think it cost less than half of my first digital delay (a Lexicon PCM-41) blows my mind. If you get bored and want a laugh you can see more of what I use the x18 for on my youtube channel under my callsign, K7JBL. Yes...That is an FCC approved vanity callsign. I am a hardcore JBL fan. The stream allows other hams to listen (via RU-vid) to what their signal sounds like. Some are really good, others pretty bad. It's crude, but we have fun. We're all old. It doesn't take much to amuse us. :-) Anyhow...You have me hooked. Great info and I wish you the best going forward with your business.

I have used the Presonus Studio Live Series of mixers for the past 10 years. For those who want a great sounding and full feature digital console with a minimal learning curve, I highly recommend this series. They come in 16ch, 24ch and 32ch boards and they are fully linkable as well if you need more channels. I currently use a Studio Live 24 series 3. Its all you need for small to medium size shows and its really compact.

Great videos bro, thanks for sharing. Question please, could you use that same little Yamaha analog mixer with your pro setup? And how would the audio quality be? If say you are only using the 2 x in + 2 x out channels going into a Pioneer RX2 + 2 x Technics SL 1200 MK2. Also, in terms of power and power source, what kind of power distribution do you use for the amps and DBX!? Thanks 🙏

Pro tip from me (16 y exp as a sound eng) If shit in, then shit out. No matters how equipment you have. Good or decent signal is "must to have" from stage, so good band with good instruments and mics (original not fake copy of shure) are much preffered than the best PA

I remember my first time on a digital desk, my first impressions were that it didn't have enough physical interaction.. This was a good 10 or so years ago though! I'd gone from a Soundcraft Ghost 32 to a Souncraft VI1 for studio recording and theatre work at school. While I still preferred the sound from the Ghost (I still miss that desk in all honesty) the VI1 was fantastically versatile and the stagebox was an absolute game changer. I would have probably preferred a few more faders than the 16 on the VI1 being able to tab between banks without any delay was very handy, along with EQ curves that were actually editable instead of the different bands on the Ghost. Their newer VI1000 is in the same form factor but heaps more features. Would certainly be my choice if I were to get a new desk since I wouldn't ever be able to afford a DigiCo..

I cant remember if this is correct, but I believe Presonus has a model that is expandable, so you can buy one 32 channel unit and them slave another later on with a cat cable. Make sure they are on the some updated software and you are good to go.

Heres a good question John. We talk A LOT of big numbers last video and this one. Expensive stuff. What's going rates for people doing shows? Are tours getting 5 or 6 figures? Are we talking hundreds per show? Thousands? High and low numbers and examples for other companies are fine, I know the world is weird about posting our prices as audio guys. I'm asking as I'm pretty curious about your market.

hey dude! great video. as a live sound guy myself i would reccomend you check out the midas m32 and m32r. they are only around 2000 dollars more than the x32 and it is based on the x32. the workflow and capabilitys are pretty much the same, but you get midas mic pre's and a couple of other things from midas in there. as well as just an overall more premium console that feels a lot better to work with. i feel this would really take your rig to the next level
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 5 лет назад
Well, the M32 is an X32 in a fancy box. Is that worth paying 2X as much? Well...yes. The control surface is worth $2000 more for sure. Of course both are a bit long in the tooth, and today I'd look at other brands, and stage boxes and mixers that use MADI to connect, so that I'm not locked into one vendor.
@mrmixalotcreative5847

I'm not a fan. It's a lot more money for better buttons and maybe a sightly better sound. Still has pretty poor user interface in my opinion.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 5 лет назад
@@mrmixalotcreative5847 As I mentioned, both are now dated designs, and you aren't going to get a UI from a $50,000 mixer for that price no matter what brand you buy. Screens on sub-$5000 digital mixers are typically 7". You can always use the Midas M32 stage box to get the Midas preamps (because who would use a digital mixer with an old-fashioned snake), but the _real_ Midas preamps come with the blue faceplate models. You could buy a pair of DL153 stage boxes for an X32, but obviously not for budget reasons. I used a DL153 just for the AES3 ports; we had (still have, in fact) a DL251 that we used with 1 or 2 Pro 2 mixers as needed per the bands' contracts. Since then the house has upgraded to a mixer with more glass real estate. It's nice if you can afford it.

OK the mop bucket looks lost, other than that great vid! But I do have one pressing question, why did you go with passive cabinets rather than active ones? I think this would actually make a great topic within itself. I mean yes there more expensive but you save not having to buy amps and there a little safer to use not having to worry about dumping to much power in them.
@emoryjenkins6481
@emoryjenkins6481 5 лет назад
Powered speakers don't always have the nicest amps inside them. Also they are considerably more heavy, a concern for flying arrays. I work with both powered and unpowered speakers, and personally I prefer running just one speakon over a power and an xlr.

They are. But the midas board and x32 arent as similar as you think. The midas is a much better board in almost every aspect. Not to mention they do no share alot of the same parts. Faders, pre amps etc are different and much better on the midas.

Great videos. I worked with a guy in upstate New York doing live sound for a few shows. We got there 3 hours before the band and unloaded and set up. And then we stayed for 3 hours afterwards packing up. These were routinely 12 to 15 hour days and all he charged was about $300. I got paid $50 sometimes. I didn't see the point in making money doing live sound. Ive got the gear, but just focus on Mobile djing now. ANY advice ON making $$$$ doing live sound??? To me he should have been charging $1500 but he said bands and venues wouldn't pay that. Thank you

He's right, thats a $1500 + gig, venues will pay it if they want proper production. It sounds like he needs to find a new client. $300 is ridiculous.
