Started listening 3 years ago as a student pilot. Now I’m back listening as a CFI still enjoying it!

Was tired of hearing the news coverage on the accident and wanted an actual pilot’s thoughts on it. Thanks for reading my mind and the quick upload!

Some info on the pilot of the Citation V that crashed. One of the guys I fly with worked with him. Former safety guy for a major airline. So he had a ton of experience. Leaning toward a medical issue.

The part that confuses me is if the PIC has a single pilot type rating, the pilot monitoring cant log the hours unless the PIC is MEI training? So as a low time pilot, not being able to log SIC time only stalls my career.

Just officially started my flying lessons yesterday and this podcast has been great! Was wondering your thoughts on buying a small plane to build those hours? It seems to make more sense than paying the 60ish grand I’m looking at for my commercial at this flight school that doesn’t offer finance. It’s about my only option in my area

non-pilot with a question here: if there's a pilot rated to fly a craft alone (prop or jet), I'm sure they can take along a second as co-pilot who may be recently certified; in that case, do they both get credit for the flight hours of the entire trip? Said another way, is this a way for someone to build up hours in a particular craft by offering to be a co-pilot to someone who may not need one, but might welcome it? Maybe not get paid, but get flight hours... or is this just a ridiculous question that nobody would consider? (It seems that for the small single-pilot jets, it would make sense, but then I'm not a pilot yet.)

How will captains ever be trained if there is no SIC position?

Single pilot in a taxing environment is a big liability, but its all about cost cutting, but how much is. The legal issues going to cost when things go bad?

What do you think? If this is deemed a medical event for the pilot, (who was a retired airline pilot and likely over the age limit for airlines), will this justify the mandatory retirement age for airlines? Some are talking about raising the age limit but I want my pilot to be cardiovascularly fit to fly.
@Catpanl
@Catpanl 6 месяцев назад
These cases happen and FAA won’t take any action because it’s the lobby powers who prod the senators who then authorize FAA budgets. Maybe you have heard that this fall the retirement age was raised to 67 even after this accident.

Sean, I’m curious, if insurance does change on your renewal, which models of aircraft do you think you’ll be down to for S typed pilots?

If I was a paying client in a business jet, I would ensure that their were 2 pilots assigned. If I owned any aircraft and I regularly carried family members, I would definitely train them up in order to land, just in case.

The problem is that you can’t log flight time as a SIC time in a single pilot jet unless the operation has a PDP or the captain doesn’t have a single pilot type rating,
@ProPilotPlaybook
@ProPilotPlaybook Год назад
Hi Aero, this why we didn't want to get into depth on that particular subject... because we knew we would be combating a slew of comments like this. Don't get me wrong, we love the comments! On the surface your comment is false. There are ways to log the time, after doing some digging you'll figure out what we mean. Just for starters, just because you have an "S" after your type rating doesn't mean that you can't fly as a crew, or that the jet is only rated to be flown single pilot either. There is a HUGE misconception around the details concerning this subject and of course I'm sure there are folks out there doing it incorrectly.

Official 1,5 pilot operation?? one Certified on type and second with PPL with very basic type training, to help on radio/autopilot failure/landing if PIC incapacitation. (that operation would not cover safety only for major aircraft failure AND PIC incapacitation). I think that's the future. Airplanes made for single pilot operation but operated with "passenger" on right seat.
@ExtremeRecluse
@ExtremeRecluse Год назад
Single pilot anything is silly with passengers. With family as passengers,I would be letting each one of them train getting that machine on the ground. It is a big liability to charter a single pilot aircraft, for the customer and charter service. But, I just had my physical. So what. Anything can happen. As a paramedic, I have performed CPR on highly trained athletes.

Flying for free as a copilot? I don't think so.

We enjoy the show and learn a lot. You've really been encouraging about getting a pilot license later in life. As a result, hubby is starting a new career. However, Sean, not sure why you had to point out the co-pilot was female and don't love your attitude about the comments, etc. Feels kinda condescending. Mike, love your supportive attitude!
@Dub636
@Dub636 Год назад
Wow. Can’t believe you’re picking apart him mentioning she was female. So sensitive
@dlockert1
@dlockert1 Год назад
@@Dub636 Yeah, as a female in male dominated industry, I am kinda sensitive about that. But, for reference, my husband made the remark about it before I did as we watched the video. The comment had a negative implication to it and it was noted that she was female. Hence, female = negative in this scenario. In reality, the gender of the co-pilot had nothing to do with anything. It would be no different than saying the co-pilot was Black or gay . Unnecessary and irrelevant to the outcome of the incident, but with a negative inference just the same.
@RobOnRefresh
@RobOnRefresh Год назад
@@dlockert1 - I think you both (you and your husband) are too hypersensitive. If you go back and really listen to what he was saying starting at around 35:07 you'll hear him say "This guy" meaning the Pilot, and then in order to not misgender the first officer, he refers to her as a female. I didn't get any implication that just BECAUSE she was female she shouldn't have been in that plane. It was all about her lack of experience, not her gender. I think everyone is just looking for a reason to be offended these days. If you are looking for it - you'll find it. Maybe lighten up a bit and give people the benefit of the doubt??
@dlockert1
@dlockert1 Год назад
@@RobOnRefresh I hear you 100%. And really, I'm not looking to be offended - that isn't my style at all. In fact, I tend to err on the side of giving people the benefit of the doubt more than I should. I promise you we aren't Karen and Keith over here. Just happened to strike us both at the time that it didn't seem necessary. Ironic that I've given a perception that is exactly what annoys me about our culture and society right now. :(
