SimpleShot Pro Tip: Shooting mismatched ammo and bands just results in fatigue, poor release, handslap and less fun! Check out this breakdown of just how much more velocity we saw from a bandset with a 250% increase in draw weight!
Seems the lighter ban is more resilient and has better stretch characteristics , sounded more tuned and less stressed , Im impressed , you only lost a few feet a second and only working with 8 pounds vs 23 pounds ! I like getting the same results with less work ! 👍👍
11mm steel is the best. For over 15 years of slingshot hunitng experience, i know for a fact that the blunt force trauma is the factor here. If you want to hit a rabbit head consistently you need a good normal mouth bow anchor point. No butterfly style of shooting is included here. Ideal would be 10 mm lead but its much harder to get and more expensive. Over that weight you will get unnecessary trajectory loss. 11 mm steel is 5.5 grams and kills every time if hit in rabbit head. 8 mm steel, 2 grams does not, belive me i have tried. I also recommend 1745 tubes over bands for 11 mm steel. Because you get atleast 10-15 times more shots before they brake. Also you dont have to mess with cutting tapered bands all day long. And the speed is fairly the same compared to thera band gold. So my advice is 11 mm steel and 1745 tubes :)
We used to just find a nice branch , 2 rubbers, and leather. That's all there was to making a slingshot. That's all we needed. And if you think about it, it's really not that complicated. If your rubber is too long or too short, it will still do the job.
Wat I found was heavier bands wit a roughly matched ammo travels a lot further and for hunting on impact a lot of the time it’s still enuf power to dispatch your game.. Love yourself tips and I take tem very serious and you’ve helped loads merry Christmas 🎄 from Ireland ☘️👍🏻
Thanks for the video Nathan, it will help many people still struggling with their setups. I know I did, untill I sought your advice 😉 Oh, I will only add that for 5/16 ammo, one can go way lower in draw weight for target shooting. I go around 6 pounds, but of course I am not getting those speeds! All personal preference of course!
Problem is, that even when they do it, their brain refuses to explain the facts correctly. That goes for both motorcycle counter steering and slingshoots 😁 Of course this video will help a TON those who still search for their ideal setup!
this Slingshot stuff is cooler than I thought.. Excited. Ordered the ocularis and scout Lt. Going to try both. have a daughter that wants to shoot anyway.
Thank you so much, I'm new to slingshot shooting, but I'm having a blast learning new great information and getting better all the time.Thank you again very helpful 😁
The greatest thing about slingshooting is the feeling of improvement each time you shoot. My flights are about 25-50 rounds each, and when I begin to miss a lot, I'll decide I'm through, getting tired or just tired of resetting cans and targets. Sometimes a session will be 500 rounds or more.
Pro tip: buy your steel ammo on amazon. I buy 500 3/8 ammo for around $13. 200 1/2 ammo for around $16 I buy simpleshot's die cut bands. I believe I usually shoot 15mm×22mm. Either the 2and or 3rd band width up on simpleshot site works great for 3/8. I use 3rd or 4th size....I believe 22mm-25mm for my 1/2. I prefer lighter bands for more accurate and fun shooting but it will tell you on their site which bands match which ammo size
I'm new to slingshots with an archery background - great video, very well explained. so my - 20-12, 0.75 bands are probably ok for general use with steel/clay 8mm ammo - I was thinking on going 1mm but now looks like a silly idea.
@@einsteind You said you were thinking about going 1mm? That's the part we didn't catch. The size is totally up to you! Chinese shooters have been raising the bar with small ammo lately, so don't shy away from larger ammo unless you really need to hit hard.
Great video as always, Nathan. I have a question about the thickness of the bands, I got GZK Black 1mm bands, and they're quite taxing. I am right eye dominant, but I have to hold the slingshot in my right hand cause it makes it more stable. What is the thickness of the bands you're using?
Several people have done this, but it is different for each shooters draw length and elongation percentage being used. Not to mention other factors such as temp and humidity.
@@simpleshot could you link their findings? Would be great to have a dataset even for just one draw length. Ideally you could make one for all variables band thickness, draw length, taper and ammunition. I come from the airgun world and while I appreciate there is a lot of variables to consider I find it surprising no one appears to have done a comprehensive data sheet for all the factors. It would be nice to at least be able to answer the question of what band thickness görs best with what ammo. Cheers! :)
We don't use TBG any more since there are much better latex options available now (in our humble opinion). TBG will still work for sure and if we had some kicking around collecting dust, we'd sure make bands out of it. As with everything slingshots, try both tapers and see which one you like better! Have fun!
I am looking to shoot rocks. What band thickness would I need? I am well aware of what it is like to shoot rocks and that I need a bigger pouch. I am getting back into slingshots. Also, in your opinion, which slingshot would be more ideal for rocks, The Scout XT or the Axiom Ocularis? or maybe neither. Rocks will probably be on the heavy side.

Good day Mr., there is a new idea recently among sling shooters that, even for heavy ammo, more thin bands would work better than heavy bands. For instance, a 1mm GZK band would shoot slower than 2 layers of 0.50mm of the same brand, would you say this is true? Have you tested this? Thanks for the video, I learn a lot from your channel.
We actually love this about slingshots... there's always something new to discover. We actually find that double layer bandsets do not perform as well as we'd like and therefore we are retiring our double bandset line. Thanks for your support and check out our latest video on double bandsets!
Right I got what you were saying, but how do I actually decide without buying the bands? GZK bands are super expensive and I don't want to just splash out on all the different types just to try them. Also how do I decide the thickness, taper, etc?
Yo Barney. Have still got it?...I can do you one for the Barnett Cobra, 'not too dissimilar. It was crap. I never got anywhere with it. My OTT, my Hathcock Sniper and my cheap as chips Frameless all kick ass. Personally I'd flog it and get something that can hit stuff?
@@slimtheowl That's a shame dude. If it's based on a Barnett piece! No doubt some guys got good (ish) with them...but that would be a struggle...because they're kak! ; ) Maybe try a flatbander later? Put the time in and there's a grin waiting. Try over water. You find yourself enjoying the misses as much as the hits, which can hold your interest as you climb.
I have a bobcat problem on my organic farm. I've hit it with my wally world special through my coop yard fence, lol!!! Don't wanna kill it, just wanna make it not wanna come back. Same with possum and raccoons. Best slingshot and ammo...what do you reccommend??
Unfortunately, hitting them in the butt with a non lethal projectile is not likely to stop the behavior. You have nice things for them to eat! We can't recommend using a slingshot for this problem.
There's more to the answer than just long or short. The important thing is the whole system. Match bands to ammo and do what works best for YOU to product top accuracy. Long bands with the wrong ammo will fail. Short bands with the wrong ammo will fail.
I am having some real problems with my Bands snapping continuously by the pouch tie point ..right by it im using Snipersling in .8 mostly and was cutting it pretty wide at 35 to 25 over a 7 inch active Band length ( people say too much elastic but with 9.5 steel you get a terrifically flat trajectory and some right knockdown Joules of energy on target) like i say though it keeps snapping..I cut my elastic down to 30 to 22 with a 7 inch active length and its still fast enough to do the job But still snaps all the time ..Any Tips or is it just one of the Hazards with using Natural Latex Bands with Dye in them to retard the uvBreakdown ?
Bands are going to break, sure, but it sounds like you're having more trouble than you should. If they are breaking at the tie-in, that is likely the issue. You may be tying too tight or stretching too hard when you are tying in. Be careful to not bruise / damage the latex when you are tying them! simple-shot.com/products/die-cut-flatband-strips
@@simpleshot Thankyou you know It has Completely escaped me at times that im dealing with a Natural Product and like a piece of fruit when you mention Bruising the latex Mmmm ! Good Point that cheers makes a lot of sense that cheers
The band needs to be matched to the actual mass of the clay ball. We group our bands according to steel sizes, so you'd need to convert your clay to a similar weight steel to figure it out. Likely you'd not want more than any 3/8 bandset we offer. 1/2 inch steel is very effective for hunting, but a well-placed shot with 3/8 steel is all it takes. Clay balls are a great idea, but they do tend to vary a lot from one piece to the next. It's pretty tough to be accurate when the ammo mass fluctuates. Just keep an eye on that.
@@simpleshot thanks The purpose of this set up is to cull pigeons inside of 15 feet without having to clean up (the cats will take the birds). I might occasionally use rocks for very close range shots. Do you think the ocularis is a good choice for me?
That's an Axiom Ocularis Yellow Jacket. It is one of our older models that is no longer made. We do have other versions of the Axiom Ocularis. Here is a direct link to them. simple-shot.com/products/axiom-ocularis
@john wilson Seems to me that your anchor point and extended arm length determine all measurements, coming from your arm length and shooting style. I haven't seen anyone comparing apples to apples here.
Sure. You can find our bands matched to 3/8 inch ammo at our site: General purpose (longer lifespan) simple-shot.com/accessories/general-purpose-slingshot-flatbands/ Performance (shorter lifespan, faster FPS) simple-shot.com/accessories/performance-slingshot-flatbands/
30/25 or 25/20 mm tapered theraband gold. Cut them for maximum power. They won't last quite as long as a 'boring' cut......but the speed and thump with 9.5 steel is deadly. 25/20 is ample for target practice , but I go 30/25 for dinner. 😉
