Both The RODE VideoMics are flawed, and Both pick up Electric Signals. RODE is aware of the problems, yet it sells faulty products! If you have this problem send RODE this Video: rode.com/en-us/support/contact
Hello man. I want to record documentary videos and was thinking to use this go II for recording outdoor scenes (field recordings) . Would this be a good chocie for that ? Im thinking for using wireless go ii for indoor interviews and these video mic go ii for outdoor scenes. Would it be a good choice ? Kindly reply
Does the Deity V-MIC D4 have the same issue? Both have the same price in USD, but where I live, the Deity is $25 more expensive. I'm searching for a shotgun mic that has the capability to use TRS and USB for my use case
I only get the rustle when using the TRS cable on the VMGII. With the USB cable (connected to the PC) I get a perfect sound. Is there a way to connect the mic to the camera using the USB cable?
for highly directional, distant recording, it's a good mic for the price. It's cheap as hell and isolates distant sounds pretty nicely. Great value. I don't get buzzing 🤷♂
If something is wrong with "the guys setup" then it could be wrong with your setup too... p.s. the guy tested the mic in 20+ different locations, before making this video. @@liceafilms
This RODE VideoMic Go2 works great! With the AUX or USB cable. Sound is flawless. No hiss or hum whatsoever. If you're hearing that noise, check that your outlets are properly grounded and all the electronics you have around you and on the same circuit are plugged into a surge protector that has a powerline noise filter. This review assumes that the mic is the issue.
The Mic is the issue 100% I've tested other microphones in the same exact scenario... No Problems I'm glad you don't have the problem, and you correctly pointed out source is electronics around, but it does not change the fact that this microphone is fundamentally flawed.
@@JunkBondTrader I can't say for the second version, but the first version quite literally is missing any connection to the ground, it is a design flaw, and absolutely every GO1 microphone is manufactured faulty out the box! Maybe I was super unlucky and got a bad GO2, but I doubt it (didn't want to open it up as I would was sending it back).
Thanks for video and YES this buzzing does happen on some of these mics, specifically the Rode Video Mic Go 1. It seems my interference was coming from my Router & Wifi only after doing some tests. I think if you are outside, less issues occur but not positive on that. Grounded would be better for these mics but until then, check the sound with headphones before recording. AI technology (Adobe) can clean this up if you get in a bind but I Am going to go ahead and buy the Go II and give it a shot just because it is the most portable best sounding and easy setup mic I have found for the money. Thanks!
If the Mic is properly grounded, you shouldn't really get interference. you could wrap aluminum foil or copper tape around the part where the capsule is... that should technically resolve the issue. but if the company designing the mic messed up, there is not much you can do, other than moving electrical devices away from the mic.
thanks buddy for this video i juts cancel the purchase of this mic, quick question, what would be your suggestion for a same type of mic in this price range?
So what would you recommend to buy in similar budget? Or maybe up to $200? I specifically need a mic that I could use at a distance of around arm length.
Thank you for confirming this. I have this microphone, first microphone I've ever used to try and improve my top down craft videos...and I've been having a big problem with mystery background static and buzzing. I couldn't work out what the problem was, and finally discovered it happens whenever it's near my desk lamp or radio (even with the volume at 0). It's been a nightmare, getting rid of it, and now searching for something better.
I was in the same situation, worse I was hired to do a job, and the audio was messed up, i ordered new cables, pre-amps, changed camera bodies, I mean surely it was not the new microphone from a reputable company... right? Well, after I figured it out, I just had to make this video ;) Good Luck with your new mic, I heard Deity v-mic D4 was a good alternative, but havent personally tired it out, so all the best with your research :)
@@honestview Oh goodness, what a headache you had! After a ton of research Ive just ordered the DJI mic 2 with a lav. I think that will suit my needs just fine. I won't be buying any other rode products that's for sure!
NO microphone is going to compensate for problematic studio set up or improper use. Used correctly, the Road Video Mic Go 2 works flawlessly. It did take me a while to figure out how THIS microphone needed to be used. But that’s true of ANY microphone. If you’re looking for the PERFECT microphone, good luck with that. Is it perfect? No! But at its price point, it’s pretty amazing. For the cost, it’s kind of ridiculous to expect it to compete with more expensive Mics.
well, if the one thing that could fix it is a little bit of isolation tape, you could say that they purposely made it bad for that price point... as you can CLEARLY see in this video other mics don't have the same problem... But I am happy you found a way to use a crippled microphone and work around it's flaws, that makes you a good consumer!
I bought this mic and tried first time today. Firstly in my kitchen with the mic usb connected to my DJI Action 3, very distinct buzz. Then connected in the living room to the laptop via usb, Rode Connect app levels showed about 3/4 full levels of just buzz noise. I think inside a house, there is seemingly no way to remove the buzz and get this mic to be silent (without maybe tin foil etc).
thanks for your feedback, it helps understand if I am simply unlucky to get a faulty unit every single time, or of there is an actual problem. I made this video so that anyone with a problem can send it to rode instead of explaining the problem,
After some testing, its not the wire, the wifi, my phone, my cats or my camera but the mic only has the buzzing sound when I have my outlet extender turn on, the buzzing when you touch the housing is still there but I always wrap the mic's 3.5 cable around the housing and use the type c port to connect to my laptop so it kinda grounded itself lol idk. Otherwise the sound quality is just amazing, at least it cheaper to replace a cheap outlet extender than a $100 mic lol. Edit: Its not the outlet extender but any outlets lmao, whenever I plug my laptop charger in the buzzing comes up again.
I encountered another problem with this microphone (VideoMic Go II). I always use it on camera for filming pets outdoor. It works really well on the Nikon Z6 II, even in auto mode. I recently switched to a Canon R6 II and this same microphone is a disaster in auto mode. Even in manual sound recording mode, I can't get it to have the same sound quality as the Z6 II. Not even close. On R6m2 this mic picks up too much white noise and acts almost like an omnidirectional (picking up sounds all around me equally). I'm thinking of switching to the Rode NTG now as I don't want to stick with the Nikon system just because of the external mic issues on Canon. I'm tired of struggling with auto focus on the Z6 II. 😀
Gound your home better and this will help with the clipping and buzzing. Ham radio operators know this trick and some even go outside and water their ground. ❤😊
Is the speaker wire insulated? And also try attaching the end of that wire to the sleeve of the 3.5 jack sleeve… You can get copper tape from the hardware store. That is a great insulator btw
Same problem here. I found this video after buying it. I want to use it for an office setup and the audio quality is great but there's a constant humming sound in the background which is not acceptable. I'm still debating if I will return it or try one of those ground fixes.
Awesome. Can you make a video instruction and the actual look of the fixed old micgo, please. That could help a lot of micgo owners that rode scammed. Thanks, bro.
You are the only person in the world that doesn't like this rode, it's ok, I am buying it base on the other 7 other positive and outstanding performance recommendations
I want to like RODE but time and time again they make bad products. And I keep giving them second chances, until you realise the whole company is an overpriced under-delivering joke. It’s kind of like the Sure SM58 and the Sure SM7B being 99% identical, but a $500 increase in price due to the form factor. Microphone components are cheap, you’re paying for the aesthetics, fine tuning and brand image… and in the case of RODE, you’re paying ONLY for the aesthetics and brand image…
I clearly showed tech giants reporting the same problem, but whatever… the point of this video is not to stop you from buying the microphone, but to make you aware of the problems you might face in the REAL WORLD, outside of the perfect sound studios of the other rode sponsired reviewers… and if you don’t face those problems, GREAT!!! But if you do, you’ll know what’s wrong and where the problem is. It took me months, I thought it was my camera, then I thought it was the cables, adapters, I thought I had to get a pre-amp or noise filter… because I thought surely it can not be this expensive, highly praised mic… It was, the mic is flawed, that is a FACT! What you do with that is up to you. But I truly hope it works great for you and you have no issues, others seem to report it to be the case, but my experience is DOCUMENTED! Right here, in this video! Clear as day. I could have received 2 faulty units, but what is are the chances of that?!
Update: I have been using the mic for several days and I can't be more happy with it, it performs fantastic its a bargain deal for the superior quality it delivers, I will buy now the NT1 5th Gen You guys buy the Chinese ones I will buy and recommend this excellent Australian product
It's very interesting and you're absolutely right, but... Can you give a few models of mic's (or companies - this is better) on the market which don't have this problem?
Good question, I'm not an audio specialist and don't get sent mics for review, So I can't speak for sure. You can go with DEITY as they make very similar products, in a similar price range. I've tried the cheaper brands like NEEWER or BOYA etc, and although they have no problems with interference, the sound is a bit lacking in base and a bit too watery, yet completely usable audio. I wish I had access to brands that offer DSLR mics like: Sure, Beringher, Audio Tecnica, Sennheiser, Small Rig, Saramonic, COMICA, SYNCO,
Maybe you're right, after all, i've only tested over 20 odd cables over the years.... maybe all of them are faulty. ;) But seriously though, it depends more on your environment and the EMI emitted... for example the cat rug is terrible with interference!
@@SDKSASHA The problem depends on your environment and whether or not you have good headphones... If you take the Mic outside, there is no problem, if there are no electronics in proximity, also no problem, it really depends.
Please apply basic Logic: if microphone 1 does not pick up interference while microphone 2 in the exact same conditions does pick up interference… please argue how it could be the fault of the use and not the microphone. P.s. microphones without speakers don’t cause feedback loops… so having multiple microphones together is no problem.
I had this problem in the Rode Mic go I, and I thought it would've been fixed on the II. The mic quality itself is good but sadly the buzz is a huge deal breaker.
Yeah on the V2 The buzz is substantially less, but it is still there, I was excited for the upgrade, but had to send it back. I think it would work as an outdoor mic, less electric devices to pick up interference from ;) But yet again, why would you want to consciously buy a mic that works well in only specific situations.
@@honestview You're right, it would work as an outdoor mic, but it would've worked better as an all-in-one budget mic if not for that inteference. haha. Thanks for bringing light to this. It would be horrific to do shoots with this and find out you had buzzing sounds during post.
My rode v1 the lead doesn't click in properly and can fall out. On my filmaker kits the battery door doesn't close properly because they break. Rode is cheap rubbish
Thank you for the video! My mic GO 1 was catching my phone's EM fields and I had a hope that 2nd version doesn't have this issue. Now it's too late: I ordered it yesterday 😆 Seems I have to use your tips about the grounding, thanks!
You really think I bought the mic spent 20 seconds with it and decided it was defective? I have bought various cables, tried it with phones, cameras, computers, bought special anti static devices, microphone grounding devices, my plugs have electric filters on them... ha ha... but not funny.
Actually that's cheap stationary mic, about 4/5times cheaper than the Rode VideoMic ;) so the comparison is between a cheap stationary mic VS an Expensive Mobile mic. p.s. I've tested this mic against $10 and $20 knockoffs, and those don't have any of the issues, but the sound quality in general was worse.
