Hello friends! If you are new here, my name is Katherine and I am a third year PhD candidate studying history at the Ohio State University! I am a social historian of war, and my area of focus is France + Australia during WWI.

Yooo the PhD unproductiveness feeling is so real. I put off doing my dissertation proposal for so long because I was scared I would massively mess it up. Thankfully I finally got it done and defending it next week but the struggle is real.

@@KatherineWeiss Absolutely! I also love that your open about going to therapy. I ended up starting therapy this semester because I was in such slump with everything and it really does help!

@@patrickh3895 Therapy is so good! And at my school and many others grad students get a set amount of free sessions, which is super helpful. Definitely helped when I was first making the transition into grad school.

Deciphering (esp. handwritten), sorting, and analyzing archival materials is A TON of work! My colleagues in ethnographic or only theoretical projects never seem to understand that. It’s more tedious and time-consuming than writing. I love your pajamas!

it’s the same with me! I felt like I haven’t done anything because I’m not doing any production (yet), so I feel like I’m not productive. I read that this phenomenon it’s common, it’s called “second-year slump” (or in our case: third-year slump). The feeling of lost during the first year of PhD candidacy..

I think that the feeling we all get that we are not being as productive as we should be is just anxiety. I spent hours in the archive and still felt that I had not done enough for my thesis this week. The hardest part of the thesis for me is actually putting down the initial words. Anxiety, and fear of failure always slows me down! Your videos have demonstrated that you are very productive! Also, your videos are very relevant and help those of us that are in the middle of the same journey.

How has your dating life been? I'm broke as a PhD student so I get really embarrassed when I go out on a date and the dude always has to pay :(((

I am currently engaged but my partner is also in grad school. I wouldn't be embarrassed though! When I was dating my first year of grad school I didn't feel bad about them paying if they had offered/asked me out- but then I would often offer to pay a round of drinks. If I were you, I would suggest low budget-dates, or things that are free! Like walking around a park, just getting coffee, or other free things around the city! (I also get discounted tickets for being a student and like taking advantage of that)
