Producing drum and bass with reason 12.
Hardware is lush, but sometimes I can't be bothered by it. Computers win with their convenience. However, music made with software sounds too modern, and i guess it's the trade-off. Here I show you my approach to making a minimal 90s dnb track inside a Reason 12.

Computers give options, many options, and then these options get overused. This is why you get over compressed music these days + the loudness competition is killing it completely. But you can always say NO to compression and over limiting and the music will sound good again :)

I love all of your tracks ❤ reason fam represent. your tracks (both hardware and software) are like a masterclass in beautiful simplicity, true artistry. I’m also a big fan of the JV vst, just load up one of the drum kits and you’re set for those 90s percussion bits.

Damn. Reason has come a long way since 3.0. I haven’t dabbled in DnB production since 2008 when Reason was my software of choice, or rather the one I was taught on. It looks a little different. What a difference a decade and a half can make lmao!!

I wouldn't say I like Reason, I am just used to its workflow, but , generally, i am not a fan of computer music so I don't care about it too much :)

Nice stuff mate. Am enjoying your channel a lot. Great track, love the snare in Photek brk 1! Also really interested in your mindset of coming from pure hardware and how you're looking to recreate that sound in software. ✌

Hey, cheers :) Yeah, I am a bit obsessed with the hardware sound I am getting from my gear, but hardware can be very inconvenient in this day and age, you can't take it with you on a holiday, and there's always a mess in my living room with stuff and cables :D I want to perfect my ITB production to a point I can be really at least 95% happy with, so I could sell all my gear and be free :D

@@IJOSoundVideo Hardware is a bit laborious but there's definitely some charm in that. I also love replicating the workflow of having all your drums break chopped up in one preset. FXs on another etc. Makes it fun when you start sequencing as that's all you have to focus on. Decimort 2 & RX950 are definitely the best sampler style emulation out atm. You're sorted with that Arturia bundle also.✌🥷

Even I am not a Reason user, I found such videos inspiring. Your vids make me think about buying old sampler with console)))

The last few upgrades of reason have encouraged me to use audio for breaks. For years I only ever used midi . Love the oldskool sound your achieving using reason . Your back catalogue of tracks are amazing mate

Still using Midi for break manipulation myself. Keeping myself sharp on it so it transfers over to my hardware workflow.

@@Arc.hitectureMusic yeah i totally get where your coming from. i doubt i will ever get my hands on hardware again . i got a few bits left over in my spare bedroom and boxes and boxes of cables etc dotted around the house . i am so lazy these days i just mess about on my laptop , but i do keep my hand in with midi and using trackers . i wouldn't touch audio for years . then it sparked a new enthusiasm when i think things where getting stale for me. now i use audio and midi together.

Most of my back catalog (early to late 2000) - the drums were programmed in Fruity Loops, imported in to Sound Forge as audio, then manipulated various parts manually, like pitch up and down, reverb here and there, time stretch elements, as there were no way to do that sort of automation in Cubase VST32, which I then used to sequence my breaks with music. I used various VSTi via MIDI but then converted the parts to audio and worked with audio, due to week computer power. I have tried many different production techniques over the years, mainly because I was interested in making music in as many different ways as possible, as every different approach gives totally different results. And also experience and understanding .

@@IJOSoundVideo yeah I had a faze around 2000 making samples using a tracker or cool edit or early verson audacity . Then importing the samples into ejays arranger. I think I would use anything to make music years ago not to get stuck in using a daw . Now I only mess about in reason or renoise .

in your opinion, was your mastering better than the one offered by landr? is it worth using landr's services? thanks:)
@IJOSoundVideo
@IJOSoundVideo 10 месяцев назад
Hey. I have been using LANDR since 2015, and I am happy with it. I never master my tracks as I don't trust my self. There are some tracks that were mastered by LANDR but later remastered by pro mastering engineers like Simon at the Exchange, Thomas Beau and other for vinyl releases. They do sound slightly differently, but hard to say which one's better, they just sound slightly differently . The way I see it - if the track is good, it will still stay the same, no matter the mastering. Obviously a human engineer may make different decisions than an automatic AI algorithm, but in general LANDR masters sound good and well-balanced. My own attempts at mastering my music always sounded crap compared to LANDR, so I don't even waste my time on that anymore :)

does anyone know anywhere else to get really good breaks like this?
@IJOSoundVideo
@IJOSoundVideo Год назад
There are lost of different places to get breaks. You can try and source original 90s sample CDs with lots of great breaks, perhaps on some old forums.. I have been collecting breaks since 96 or something, I got way too many of them, but mostly probably only using 5% of what I have :)
