Dr. Phinney is almost certainly the most astute metabolic teacher, researcher, and physician alive, and certainly the one I've learned the most from. A REAL treasure who is changing the world. Much respect Dr. P! An extremely discriminating mind.

After 7 months my own experience was very positive. Off all painkillers now, age 64. Don't like to use the words "diet" or "carnivore" I have adopted a meat and fat dominant lifestyle including eggs and some dairy but not much dairy. Older active people I think need two or three meals daily for more constant protein provision but that is just me experience. I have resting blood pressure 100/64 and heart rate 57 bpm blood sugar a constant 5.6 mml Feeling great! Best of luck.

I don’t know about others but I feel good after 2/3 days fasting. And I do that if I feel unwell, either cold/flu or just something else… But if I try to go beyond that I start feeling dizzy and weak. I’m 61. I like my carnivore power at the gym. So, that is that 😊

I have an, as yet, undiagnosed auto immune condition that's responsible for my hypertension, CKD, irritable skin / bowl and fibromyalgia. My Rheumatologist has encouraged me to continue with a keto diet and IF. My hand grip is very low and my joints scream at me, especially during a flare up when the fluid retention and serum CK levels increase. Today, I'm on Day 7 of a water fast although I've been continuing my fibre supplements so I can take my daily meds and if I eat a small chunk of cucumber with sea salt on to help stave off cramps (i don't drink tea or coffee and ive not made any bone broth whilst the weather's been warm!). It's Day 7 and I feel amazing!!! I'm having my bloods and urine analysed tomorrow so I'll let you know how I get on. But for now, I'm not hungry, I'm not suffering photo sensitivity, my hay fever symptoms aren't causing me concerns, my joints don't hurt and I've lost 4kg / 8cm from my waist xxx

Anyway, on Monday i had my bloods and urine tested after a 7 day fast. For the first time since 2011, i do not have haematuria! My albumin/creatinine ratio went from 6.5% to 0.7%! My glucose is always in low normal levels because ive stayed away from the many carbs that trigger IBS. But i saw a further drop, from 35 mmol to 34. All my electrolytes are in the normal range, which again is an improvement because my serum urea and serum potassium have been rollercoaster-ing for the last 3 years. Finally, my triglycerides have improved from 3.3 mmol to 0.6 mmol!! How do i feel? Well, i feel GREAT! Ive been able to literally skip out of bed every morning. Thank you to my Rheumatology Consultant who pointed me in the direction of Dr Fung and IF. I feel im in control of my wellbeing and i WILL be well again soon xxx

Does anyone know a link to the study Dr. Phinney mentioned about protein requirements for those on a ketogenic diet? He said that those persons need 1.5 grams per kg of weight. Thank you.
@petermadany2779
@petermadany2779 Год назад
Good question! I also want to know whether it makes a difference whether those grams of protein come from eggs/roe, meat/fish/dairy, or plants. I've heard that plant-based protein is only about 17% bioavailable for tissue building whereas most meat/fish/dairy is ~30% and perhaps eggs/roe could be upwards of 50% I don't know if the following will answer your question, but I recall it was enlightening both times I watched it: Dr. Peter Ballerstedt - 'When is 'Protein' NOT Protein?' ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--VY8YNhEpXw.html

I like Dr. Phinney, I take what he says seriously. But no religiously. He presents as someone who doesn’t like to be wrong. He is of the evangelical side of diets - nothing wrong with that. I experienced his take on fasting longer than 2 days. I lost considerable muscle after 4/5 days (water fasts) which I did a couple of. For me 2 days plus water fast and time restriction works well. I wish I could do longer fasts but hey ho.

I take NAC AND GLYCINE daily as well as eat mainly meat - never felt better - don’t even get a sniff of a cold or the flu even when everyone is dropping around me - glycine is important as if you eat too much lean meat you don’t get the connective tissue cartilage etc and it offsets too much thiamine which is always the criticism of carnivore diets

Can you please help us clear up the grey area where it's said that MCT oil for ketone, coconut oil and olive oil for cooking are good for us? What about sitosterolemia and the tendency of red blood cells to impair its ability to unfold, after exposure to plant cholesterol?
@chrisminifie219
@chrisminifie219 Год назад
Good question. I happen to have been thinking about this today myself. I think that the oils you mention are way better than common seed oils like canola and cotton seed oil, but I came to the conclusion that to be on the safe side I will stick to animal fats myself. If you want to avoid animal fats then coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oil would be very good alternatives
@ekondigg6751
@ekondigg6751 Год назад
MCT (medium chain triglyceride) is an oil with a composition that the liver can very easily make ketones out of. So if you consume it, even in a relatively high carb diet, the liver will still produce ketones. Good in a therapeutic diet, but in normal low-carb/keto, it's pointless to do that. Coconut oil contains a majority of saturated fat while olive oil contains a majority of mono-unsaturated fat (omega 9). So both avoid the two issues of rapid oxidation and a large omega 3/6 imbalance, that seed oils have.

It would be nice to know what proteins are being broken down: are they from disfunctional structures (as autophagy proponents suggest ;^). I'm not sure many fasting proponents suggest month long fasts (without close medical supervision ;^). It would also be nice to know how Prof Phinney feels about 3-day and 5-day fasts.

Phinney seems like he's becoming a Virta spokesperson rather than open to multiple strategies and hypotheses. Fasting is not part of Virta. Therefore, he can't endorse fasting. Worse, he will share some out of context findings on the risks of starvation, implying that 5 day fasts do more harm than good - which he definitely does not demonstrate. Worse, he will not comment on any of the fasting (as opposed to starvation) research. Look, I get it: he's a Virta man. For him, Virta is now "the way." High cost lifetime subscription services. Other approaches must be dismissed. Other research must be ignored. Unfortunate, because he is the one who influenced Jeff Volek to do all of those amazing ketogenic diet trials. Volek moved the dial. Phinney seems to want to build boundaries around Virta. Ironically, David Unwin is getting perfectly fabulous results without Virta's high cost subscription model. Whom do you trust for accurate information and advice?

Why VIRTA seems to be hiding results/data from their 5year study?, that's the question I would ask to Dr. Phinney! VIRTA published: 1 Year) lot's of peer reviewed papers and conferences with amazing results. No rebound of biomarkers and weight after 1 year. Many graphs with amazing data frequency (at least 1 data point per week, 52 data points per year). 2 year) Less peer reviewed papers/conferences. Data frequency in their graphs dramatically reduced to 1 data point PER YEAR. So their graphs had only two points + the starting mark. Clearly they were trying to hide the obvious rebound of biomarkers and weight. 3 Year) Less peer reviewed papers/conferences. And they are so difficult to find. Not even in their website. Graphs/plots with poor amount of data points. 4 Year) I'm not being able to find any peer reviewed paper or even a technical report from Virta. No info in their website. 5 Year) I'm not being able to find any peer reviewed paper or even a technical report from Virta. No info in their website. This is very weird and make me suspect about the transparency of VIRTA. Dietary space lacks of long term studies and it is surprising that VIRTA is hiding results from their very important long term trial.
