IMPROVED AUDIO
Robert Lustig, MD discusses his previous presentation at Emery Pharma with the CEO of Emery Pharma, Ron Najafi, Ph.D. In summary, Dr. Lustig discusses the rise of type 2 diabetes in children and challenges the notion that it is a chronic, unrelenting, and genetic disease. He argues that the increase in type 2 diabetes is due to exposure to certain factors, primarily ultra-processed foods containing high amounts of sugar, trans fats, and other substances that affect Liver, the microbiome and promote inflammation. Dr. Lustig also emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity and suggests biomarkers such as waist circumference, fasting insulin levels, uric acid levels, and ALT levels to assess metabolic health. Regarding statins, Dr. Lustig acknowledges their effectiveness for secondary prevention in individuals who have already experienced a heart attack but questions their use for primary prevention. He mentions that statins can have mitochondrial toxicity and may increase the risk of diabetes. Lastly, Dr. Lustig suggests enjoying desserts in moderation and as an occasional treat, while advocating for the reduction of sugar in processed foods.

Hi I have been taking statins for over 10 years as a preventative for heart attack which I don’t have a problem with but now I have been told that I have diabetes my ac1 was 7.2 I have since brought down my Ac1 to 6 in six months and it will even lower next time I have my blood test My question to you is have the statins contributed to my diabetes?

According to Dr. Lustig, Statins are mitochondrial toxic and may contribute to someone developing diabetes. It is well known that statins are mitochondrial toxic. Also a quick Google search will show you this: Mitochondrial diabetes is caused by poor functioning of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas and/or by the emergence of insulin resistance as part of a mitochondrial disorder. Consult with your doctor! If you are at high rush of diabetes, then you need to continue with your statin, otherwise I would reduce or avoid it all together, in consultation with your doctor.

I would be more inclined to listened to a physician on the subject of diet and health, if he were not greatly overweight.

according to Dr. Lustig, 20% of obese people are metabolically healthy. i have an overweight female cousin with excellent blood work -- much better than her brother who is a health nut. it pisses him off. lol.
