The problem isn't his writing speed, it's all the rewriting he does. He gets "close" to being done with one character but then has to rewrite others. But then while rewriting the others he comes up with new ideas & has to go back and rewrite the characters he thought he was "almost" done with. It's four steps forward & five steps back, followed by three steps forward & two steps back. And so on and so forth. I think we will get winds ...eventually. But of course 'a dream of spring' is nothing but a dream
@@Chickclick Definitely. Both the show & aDwD came out in 2011, so this is the first book he's written since the series exploded in popularity. Which, I'm sure added a shit ton of pressure, but after the shows epic collapse, I think it's gotten even worse Like you said, I think now he's second-guessing himself at every turn, because he wants to make sure it's as good as it can be. Which is respectable but at the same time I think he's set the standard so high that he's hardly making any real progress at all. But he finally seems to be making some progress, at least in the past year. And I'm hoping that once he finally does make it through this behemoth of a book, that that will give him some of his confidence back and motivation to get this thing wrapped up. Though, I'm still convinced it's going to take a third book to finish the series. I just can't see how he can fit everything that still needs to happen in just 2 more, but we'll see, lol
George is the James Cameron of authors. He takes his time with his material because he wants it to be perfect. It took James Cameron over ten years to make an Avatar sequel. People will get Winds of Winter when George thinks it's perfect.
James Cameron made three movies simultaneously and will release them slowly, George is writing a book that his old self should've taken 2 years to finish.
James Cameron waited with Avatar to let it burn down and have the excitement again. It was a good movie, not perfect or anything close. GRRM is a perfectionist who cannot accept anything less than what he wants. I understand that, but it falls into wanting to be one of the great authors. The more he pushes to be mysterious and it fell into him trying to hard. Ultimately he ruined his legacy if he does pass before the books are released, because he has quoted that other authors had great stories that were not completed when the author died. With his unwillingness to at least get a ghost writter or an outline written for what he needs to do completely undermines that greatness he's looking for. Like Tywin in the show, his own arrogance will destroy his legacy.
My biggest worry is that Martin will just say screw it and rush towards the ending to get it over with. And we all know how that turned out for the adaptation.
He’s 74, not in great shape, it’s been 12 years and Martin claims to only be 3/4th done with Winds. Even if Winds is released tomorrow, the odds of a finale being finished just seem highly unlikely. It’s an upsetting thing to think about. I wish he would find some help and get this things worked out.
He is also said he doesn't write in cronological reading order, he rarher writes charachters povs one by one. Meaning he while he may be finishing one charachter he might have just a few pages on several others
Why would he say "maybe even two" then? The only way that would make sense is if he's killing off multiple POV characters at once, but unless that happens, it sounds as if he's not writing them one by one but has made substantial progress on multiple POV characters.
It’s been over 10 years if the book never comes out fine but at least let the fans know how many pages there are what he expects it to be and if he’s had to scrap the book and rewrite it etc etc as to why it’s taking him so long
Why? What is the benefit of sharing that info? All it does is give people like you more shit to hold up and go "GEORGE! YOU SAID YOU SAID YOU SAID...." The entitlement of fans is not shocking but I'm certainly surprised everyone still wants to breathe down his neck about it after we saw how badly GOT ended when rushed. No, it's better to take your time.
He keeps saying the same thing. I can't hold my breath. He literally has been writing it for a decade YET keeps finishing other books. Point: House of Dragons. It's never gonna happen.
well if hes asked how the books going and hes STILL writing it of course he will say hes still writing. people are fucking clueless how working on stuff is
I do think he’s made good progress on the book in the past few years, but I wouldn’t hold my breath just yet. With House of the Dragon coming out, GRRM is going to be making more public appearances, and if there’s anything we’ve learned in the past, it’s that distractions from writing halt is progress to glacial speeds. I think it’s possible to see the book released in the next few years, but I don’t think it will be out in 2022 or 2023.
"wrap up the story line for one of the viewpoint characters of WINDS OF WINTER this week" => could mean he's decided to kill it off in chapter 2 ;) Just kidding, I hope he's progressing.
dude stfu it doesn t work like that. In this decade he also worked to the tv show that you liked so much. He s trying to give an ending that doesnt sucks this time
I get what you mean, but it's just his process. He said he's a writer who has to take a whole day just to write (unlike Stephen King) and because of it he can't be writing every day. He's also expanding a big world and mythology. Writing isn't easy, especially if there's so much fan anticipation, you don't want to let down people who made your career
I've already accepted that book won't be done, the ASOIAF series is over with. He don't care anymore he's making wayyyyy more doing the shows AND he prefers that story telling medium especially big budget where the fantastical images in this head can be put on screen
GRRM cashed in well over a decade ago. When GOT came out and he handed HBO the ASOIAF universe the writing was on the wall and we never bothered reading what it said. He’s basically retired now and has no drive or motive to finish the book series. The big/small screen is where the money is. Nice one George. I ain’t mad at you. YOLO. 💰 💰 💰
I was optimistic for awhile about winds. But his constant need to write other books, history books and then recently him saying he needs to finish Dunk and Egg novellas for the show that’s being developed. It’s not happening. He either is completely stuck or unmotivated . I think he’s stuck
I'vd given up man. I've got no fight left. No energy to hope. We're never getting this fucking book he just wants us to suffer. I have no other explanation for these last twelve years
My guess is GRRM wrapped up all the storylines in Essos and either killed off or brought the main characters to Westeros. His writing is like the show Survivor where slowly character are voted off until the final few remain. I think this is how he consolidated his story telling. I just know the story has to end in Westeros fighting the white walkers so im assuming all the main viewpoints left alive have to be in westeros to finish the story.
I cant get to upset about him taking his time, this is his legacy this is what hes gonna be remembered for, this series is one of the most anticipated books in the world if he screws this up its over so i can understand wanting it to be perfect.
He knows full well, The berserk author just died before finishing it, he knows the Wheel of Time dude died before finishing his... No way this tub of lard is going to make it long enough to finish this series.
@@akgakg6355 It wouldn't be so bad if he had actual outline for the rest of the story, and someone else could finish it. But as we saw with the show, this guy has no idea what he's doing next. He's stuck, that is the only excuse for the time it's taking him to write one book, in an on going story. 12 fvckin years? He could of written a sentence a day, and it would of been done by now.
At this point, I won't believe it'll ever come out until I physically hold a copy of it in my hands. As far as I'm concerned, the series is over and I won't get my hopes up
I first read the books in 2015... The word at the time was winds of winter would most likely be out in 2016... 8 years later and 12 years since a dance with dragons. 😢
I dont think people realize the reality of this book and even DoS which will be nothing as challenging as WoW. Winds is the culmination, pay off, peak and climax of hundreds of characters doing things, interconnecting whoch will affect in grand ripple effects othet 100s of things. Prophecies, events, religions, nations and tons of other macro and micro goals snd conversations. Imagine playing as a first timer in a mix of factorio, satisfactory and city skylines with everything unlocked with the need of perfect symbiosis with 100 of other players. It is true thats hes writting, going back and stuff but its not only because of new ideas. Its that very often, his 2 main lore nerds or himself realize that he cant cause its either conflicting with themselves and others around them, but that just 1 person moving at a specific time will change every single thing imaginable. Hes fighting the plot holes, the pay offs, the quality etc. DoS will have no such problems. A lot of people will die. A lot of plot points will he resolved and over. It is also a book in which he already had an idea about since he started.
Hes been lying for years hes also lying when he said hes terrible at predicting his writing speed thats stupid hes been writing for decades hes too busy doing everything but writing WoW he has not intention of finishing his books he wants to go out like tolkien but in his own way and leave them unfinished intentionally
Doent work that as a writer I know that George is a Gardner he takes the story where the characters take it not where he wants it sure he makes some choices to lead the story where he wants it to go in the long run so what that means his even if he wrote like the 2 chapters of a character bu the story isn't going where it is supposed to be he have to write all that chapter again with modification and foreshadowing the events and defects on other characters and considering it is a very book you can write to max limit it is gonna take time maybe like 5 to 6 years but i get it it been over 10 years but he can't calculate how long it is gonna take
