Played this one with Tom at the game day last week. It was indeed fun. The actual dice chucking mechanic reminded me of Fuse but with important effects on the back end and simultaneous instead of successive. It was also fun how you're sort of doing your own thing and then all of a sudden someone's yelling out that they need help with some aliens or to complete one of the objectives.
The one negative - the miniatures. I am a Kickstarter backer of this game. This was a major controversy with the development of this game. The campaign page indicated "highly detailed miniatures" and showed pictures of HIGHLY detailed miniatures (granted many Kickstarter pages make this bold claim and don't deliver on that promise (except for CoolMiniOrNot who have absolutely perfected minis). When they completed the minis they sent an update and showed pictures of quite literally shiny blobs of plastic and a huge uproar and controversy ensued, rightly so as people pay good money for companies NOT to false advertise. They (Drawlab created the minis) went back to the drawing board and took several more months at an attempt to correct the issue. What they came up with is what you see here. Better, yes, but nowhere near what they promised. This is the risk you take when backing on Kickstarter. Game looks fun absolutely and I can't wait to play!! Just wish companies can back their lofty promises.
Heh, I was one of the people who called them out on the "melted" first generation models. They're not GW quality, but as long as I can tell them apart AND they are durable for real-time gameplay, that works for me. I look forward to getting my copy + expansion eventually.
I should be noted that they took all the minis back and remolded em all. They are now quite fair looking and sturdier. Well they are not CMON there are about 200 of em in the expansion in total and you wont have time to focus on em since you will be paniced for a lot of the time trying to kill em. :)
minis look so cheaply made. seems CMON is going to lower the quality from now on on the smaller games, hopefully they don't do this to zombicide invader.
I am glad the game play is what I had hoped it to be, fast and frantic fun. I chuckled at the mini's being OK considering how bad the initial batch looked I can only imagine how terrible they were. They re-made them (seemingly reluctantly after trying to prove to backers that they weren't bad - they were) and added a large amount of extra time to the project. It was frustrating but the second batch was somewhat improved and likely as good as it would get. As a backer I was never too worried about the game play, even with the minis being not a key piece of the game play itself. The previews looked good and the game play looked exciting and interesting. I just hope it was a lesson to the company that when you advertise "amazing highly detailed miniatures." then people will expect that and not ones that look like they were sculpted in almond butter. Still looking forward to my copy whenever it ships, thanks for the review!!
It's great to see this again, especially the intro where he isn't all that sure he would like it. Meanwhile it's now his #1 greatest game of all time, rating higher than Cosmic Encounter.
I wonder if this review copy had the first round of minis or the later updated ones they've been working on? If they are the first round of minis then I believe they will improve for retail. Glad I backed this!
CMON are reprinting this in a Kickstarter on the 31st of October. Looks like this game with great gameplay is going to be paired with great minis, compared to the globs given in the first edition.
Been so psyched for this game ever since Radho did his first prototype preview-review. Never lost hope in Artipia/drawlab through out the small but vocals bunch of **** who kep berating them in the comment section of a kickstarter that they pledged for. Since, what I understood, Radho also really liked it a lot it would be really fun to see you make a live playthrough of this at GenCon.
Does this new version play similar to the old version. I mean I have old version with all its expansions. Do u think. It is worth backing the new? What's Yr take?
Guess what guy, this awesome game will never go beyond the initial people who kick started the game. If you check out the KS page the creator(s) basically said that they will not continue to produce any more copies of this game :/
the board game based on the computer game is called the phantom league but buy with the expansion mostly harmless for the real computer game turned board experience.
