Dan Curtis, one of the most prolific TV genre producers of all time (DARK SHADOWS, THE NORLISS TAPES, TRILOGY OF TERROR), and literature's "king of the unusual" - writer Richard Matheson (I AM LEGEND, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, SOMEWHERE IN TIME) first teamed to great success on the 1972 hit TV movie THE NIGHT STALKER, about a modern day yet old school Las Vegas reporter (Darren McGavin) who stumbles upon a serial killer who happens to be the present day incarnation of an ancient vampire. The film would inspire a sequel TV movie, a weekly series, a 21st century TV redo, and even Chris Carter's THE X-FILES.
In a rare sit-down interview, Curtis talks of the genesis of the long beloved NIGHT STALKER phenomenon.

I am pretty sure he (Dan Curtis) was involved in The X FILES T.V. Show! I am positive that I remember seeing his name in the beginning of the credits. Do you think you could bring The X - FILES to all of us, like you have with Kolchak, THE NIGHT STALKER ????!! That would be a dream come true, for all of us out here! You know how we all couldn't wait for the next episode to come around! You know!!

That was a brilliant move for him, doing it all by himself, and his instinct about everything totally paid off big time for him, and I love that for him!! He's a nice guy, and he deserves the best, and he definitely knows what the audience is craving for and wants!! He has that inner instinct for making a winner! He and I have the same taste in movies, and knowing what is good and what will sell!

Dan Curtis had that Bob Cobert soundtrack in his corner. Fifty percent of the creepy came from those horns and those fingernails on a chalkboard strings. Bob Cobert was prime time in the Dan Curtis mythos.
