RETURN TO "ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK"
(2003 / MGM / 23 mins. total)
Prod. & Dir. by - Michael Gillis
In the summer of 1981, surrounded on all sides by big budget blockbusters like RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, CLASH OF THE TITANS, DRAGONSLAYER, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY and SUPERMAN II, a modestly scaled independent actioner / social satire called ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK opened, seized the imagination of the public; then went on to become one of the most successful films of it's year as well as one of the most popular cult films of all time. In the retrospective, RETURN TO "ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK", original cast and crew (incl. director John Carpenter, co-writer Nick Castle, producer Debra Hill, cinematographer Dean Cundey, and stars Kurt Russell, Adrienne Barbeau, Issac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton and more) look back decades later on one of the most enjoyable filmic experiences of their careers.

This demonstrates what you can achieve with some imagination and guts. No CGI crutch, no suits tinkering with everything, no huge merchandizing plans.

Escape from New York was a different and defining movie of that era. John Carpenter along with other directors like Walter Hill (The Warriors) and Michael Mann (Thief) ushered in cool new visions for sci fi and action movies that stretched from the late '70s into the '80s and beyond. Can't get enough of these movies!

Same could be said for the Thing with the exception of the action movie bit. Although it did for Sci Fi Horror what EFNY did for Sci Fi Action

Interesting case study to contrast with George Miller and the Mad Max franchise. Miller took up the post apocalyptic concept with asphalt and gasoline. Carpenters visions was guns and guts. And over time, as asphalt and gasoline have morphed in the social consciousness, Miller has adapted his ideas to human trafficking and exploited people and was showered with accolades (I just came here from reading a retrospective on Fury Road on NY Times site). Meanwhile those themes were part of "Escape from NY" from the beginning. However Blisken's character represented an optimistic libertarian beacon... the inherent hard boiled tough guy with the unflinching ability to call the cards as they were dealt. And the Max character, through the original 3 trilogy films, as well as the reboot, was always a character adrift in a tidal wave of dysfunction whose humanity was somewhat lacking. For example, his flirtations with the idea of staying with the force after they bribe him with the V8 pursuit special lead to the death of his wife and baby in the first film. In the case of Blisken's universe, Blisken doesn't cause anyone's death so much as he helps them discover their own human dignity in a cause greater than themselves. Maggie's death (note how Brain dies first), for example, is not a deforming moment for Snake to lose his humanity over, but instead he uses that to test the humanity of the President and he finds the President lacking, whereby he destroys the Presidents MacGuffin. Just such a sad thing IMHO that Mad Max has had a second life in the age of male guilt, Carpenter and his vision about civilization, corrupt authority, and the power of stoic masculinity has been pigeonholed by Hollywood into Halloween remakes for audiences who have forsaken one of his best social commentary films as a kind of joke. Sure it was a hyperbole, but at it's core was 1980s version of Conan the Barbarian with a S&W, cargo pants, and an eye patch.

A remake, just for the sake of better special effects and a grittier, more realistic vision, would maybe work, BUT, nobody would do it without a new PC angle and a gender flip or two, so, no way !! Besides, the limits of the effects in the original are part of it's appeal.
