Part 1: • Why some people get PT...
We recap that PTSD entails the presence of ‘trauma-type memories’. These are unlike normal narrative memories in that they are fragmented, often incomplete, they evoke powerful emotions and have the feeling of recency. They are very toxic and they are the primary issue in PTSD; other PTSD symptoms (hypervigilance, reexperiencing/nightmares, hyperarousal/insomnia) are manifestations of ‘trauma-type memories’.
A key goal is the transformation of toxic ‘trauma-type memories’ into less toxic narrative-type memories.
Without skills to tackle the arousal, it’s very tough to get on top of PTSD.
There are discrete stages to the treatment of PTSD. The stages are:
Stage 0: Pretreatment or undertreatment of PTSD.
Stage 1: Understanding PTSD and understanding PTSD treatment.
Stage 2: Acquiring the skills needed to cope with Distress of PTSD and the distress of recalling PTSD Trauma-type memories.
Stage 3: Tolerance of their trauma narrative so that people can start to make sense of their trauma experience.
Stage 4: understanding the meaning of the trauma episode and finding the lesson of their trauma experience.

Wow so in this stage the memories that I thought were forever forgotten are brought back up. It makes sense in the healing process it's just so crazy how it feels like it's gone for good but I guess just locked away

Telling the story means that memories bubble up and the picture can become more complete. Often in PTSD, nightmares can be a clue to the themes that need to be worked on.

@@thePSYCHcollective thanks so what if you are diagnosed as PTSD but rarely have nightmares?

That’s great. The nightmares are no picnic. It’s a matter then of working through things with a therapist who does trauma work.

@@thePSYCHcollective thanks a lot of this channel and how responsive you are to the comments! (One nice thing about not being mega channel) I just got a new trama focused therapist and was given this diagnosis. Some stuff is falling into place now for why stuff happened. I just am waiting on our next appointment lol. Anyways thanks for the video and especially the replies to comments!

Can people go through events and not experience trauma or ptsd?
@thePSYCHcollective

Yes. Everyone has different vulnerabilities or flaws in how they see the world. That’s why some people are traumatised by an event that doesn’t traumatise someone else. Usually one’s vulnerability is not obvious and we are blind to our flawed view of the world (eg driving is safe, people are mostly trustworthy, my managers care about me etc). The vulnerability is a weak point in our resilience or a dangerous flaw in our model of the world. In PTSD a solution is to figure out the vulnerability so that one can address it and curtail some future event from threatening us through that flawed weak point again. Thereby we also update our model of the world. It needs to be addressed at high resolution. The usual response is low resolution (eg everything is dangerous so I’ll stay home to be safe. Then one has sacrificed the world and remains unwell)
