Puerto Rican Christmas Traditions in the USA: In this Christmas teacher vlog, I wanted to share with you how Latinos celebrate Christmas, specfically Puerto Rican Christmas traditions in the USA thorugh the eyes of an esl teacher. How Latinos celebrate Christmas varies widely from country to country. In this video, I will share with you one of Puerto Rican's popular traditions during Christmas: a Puerto Rican Parranda. A parranda is when a group of friends and family members gather together with musical instruments and stand outside someone's house and serenade them until they open the door. Once the host greets them, s/he invites them into their home and serves them food. They will sing a couple of songs and then take the host with them to another house to begin the same process. This will happen several times throughout the night as the group gets larger.
There are many styles of Puerto Rican music. Some of them are jíbaro style music as well as bomba & plena. Bomba and plena is used to accompany a series of jokes that are told (must rhyme) and then once the person has shared the joke, a chorus is sung. My father knows a lot of "bomba" jokes and I always think of him whenever we are in gatherings where bomba jokes are shared.

EL Jolgorio Está Lyrics
El jolgorio está, el jolgorio
está, bien por la maceta
Vamos a gozar, ja, ja, wepa, wepa, wepa
Vamos a gozar, ja, ja, wepa, wepa, wepa
El jolgorio está, el jolgorio
está, bien por la maceta
Vamos a gozar, ja, ja, wepa, wepa, wepa
Vamos a gozar, ja, ja, wepa, wepa, wepa
Que traigan pitorro, que traigan pitorro
Hasta que amanezca
Y el jolgorio está, ja,
ja, bien por la maceta

If you celebrate Christmas traditions, what traditions and customs do you practice? If you are a teacher, where are your students from and what unique customs do you they observe? Please comment below!

I'm from Nigeria, West Africa. We have this tradition of visiting family members and spending the holiday period with them. There's of course plenty to eat and drink. Merry Christmas!

@@TheLanguageLady Rice! That's like the most common food during festive season around here. I also had pounded yam.

We eat rice with practically everything in Puerto Rico as well. During the holiday season, it is customary to have pasteles, rice and beans, rotisserie chicken, pork (cooked over the pit) potato salad, and for desert, is flan /sweet rice pudding (there are man others) and then the post popular drink is called coquito. So delicious!

Thank you so much for sharing! I am Puerto Rican descent. My mother was adopted so she did not grow up knowing how to speak Spanish or knowing about the pier to rican traditions and culture. This is something I really want to learn more about for myself and own children. Happy Holidays!

Every year on Christmas Eve, my Abuelo invites Me, my Mom, my Dad, my Titi Miguelina, and my Titi Nilda. Me and my parents usually come around 4 and leave around 8. We hang out for about an hour or two, and then Abuelo goes to his car and gets his presents for everybody and puts them under his tree. We have dinner around 6. Our dinner is a traditional Puerto Rican holiday dinner: Arroz con Gandules or Habichuelas, Pernil, Pasteles, and Potato salad. And every year on TV, they air a Star Wars marathon, Episodes I-VI, and they always put it on because they know I like Star Wars. So after we eat and digest our food, we give each other presents. They always let me open my first, because I guess I’m a kid, and they know the urge I have to open presents. Also, Abuelo pulls this prank on my dad where, he gives him a present, and there’s always a box inside another box. It’s funny. After that me and my parents get into a cab and go home. That’s a Puerto Rican Christmas at my Grandpa’s house. And we’re doing it again this year :)
