a friend got this non running pressure washer did a tune up to get it running but it will give a nasty pull start kick back. lets see what causes it and what it takes to fix it.
@@noidontthinksolol because they should mind their own business. You should know that yourself. Woulda, coulda, shoulda but didn't. Shooby doobie doobie do.
@@EFLO3D he followed what he knew could cause the failiure..thats the way every other mechanic would have done it..and gives back a well seviced engine with adjusted valves, coil and cleaned carb...so right way to do it! :P
I never liked the term "technician" every job under the sun is some kind of "technician" but only certain jobs have been historically important enough to end up with it's own term. No one says law technician its lawyer. No one says medical diagnosis technician its doctor. The same goes for mechanic, the term technician devalues the importance of a mechanic.
Your comment destroyed the video for me .. it was the only visible comment on mobile device and I about to turn to full screen and all I saw was the words mis-installled coil
On over haul engine I take lots of pictures for the future problems Yes I’ve seen this before and it’s surely a check back on pictures if you’re stumped 😊
Really appreciate you talking through diagnosing possible causes, Mustie. Water in fuel, octane level, sheared key, spark plug, carb and reversed coil. You always give the small engine master class. Thanks.
I've been a small engine mechanic for many years. I thought I knew from the beginning of the video what this is going to be. Damn it mustie you got me again. I have yet to see that one until now. Thanks for the great content apparently I'm still learning. Thank you. Jonny from Canada
"I'm afraid to commit..." Yeah, no kidding... that HURTS, when it rips it out of your hand... My lawnmower did that once... Sheared the key off, it was out of time. When that thing kicks, and rips the handle out of your hand... Ouch. My hand was buzzing for a couple weeks... Very unpleasant... To this day, when I grab a pull start thing, I remember that, and I think "please don't rip the rope out of my hand...." Fun video. Nice job.
Get rid of the T handle and get a ... cane handle (L shaped) pull start replacement. That way, it just slips out of your hand. That or just hold one of the two arms of the T handle, as opposed to crossing it between your fingers.
I had a mower with a sheared key that yanked the handle out of my right hand and smacked my left forearm. I had a bruise on my left forearm for a week.
I'm an MX Tech with 15yrs "employed" experience, raced mx for 25, rebuilt countless of these motors and I'm watching a video of someone else do what I hate (briggs/lawnmower engines). WHY!!?? I gotta go through my own mower and would be done by now but I'm still watching this dude!!!
Hi Mustie1, The one thing I thought I would mention regarding the engine dying after 10-15 mins of use can sometimes be caused by a faulty fuel tank vent causing the fuel tank to build up a vacuum while the engine is consuming fuel. Great video btw. Cheers
I have said it before and I will say it again. I always love watching your videos, because, not once have I heard you pushing people to subscribe. You are a smart man, if people like the content they will subscribe. Which they have, and will continue to do. It just goes to show that you don't have to constantly ANNOY the snot out of people to get subscribers. All you need is great content like you provide! Keep up the good work!
I don't understand how your phone or anything else would bother anybody. I'm 67 years old thought I was a shade tree mechanic. Until I started watching your videos and harvey and others. I can't begin to tell you how much I've learned. You keep on keeping on. I'll be watching, whether your phone rings or not. Thank you.
Mustie1, This is one of THE helpful videos I have come to find. I'm running a professional pressure washing company and the pressure washer was having the same issue. The pull start was ripping out so hard it was recoiling and breaking the rope several times. I thought it was weak rope or the pull start assembly was broken. So I replaced and still it was happening. I had no way of know what to do but this video was clear and to the point. Today, I did the same, valve clearance adjustment, and cleaned and adjusted the magnet. It worked! No pull start issues. One of the best videos I have used for the company. Thank you.
Love your videos Mustie! Logic is your strong suit. I enjoy how you explain things to where even a novice can understand what you're talking about. That's what makes your channel great and makes people keep coming back.
Two comments. On Briggs coils, the coil has "engine side" to get the install correct. Also the green gas goblins and water love to hang out in the fuel shut off, So the coil problem got the owner a complete engine tune and all Mustie fans a complete troubleshoot tree on running issues of the Honda. Fantastic.
I haven’t had shop class in over 30 years. But you should be teaching it! The detail you give and as simplistic as you make it, is a gift. I wish all teachers had that.
Good to see your video's again.....I got started in my own shop because of watching you. I'm in a wheelchair because of of a Harley crash. You gave me inspiration to start my own small engine shop. That was 5 yrs ago......thx Mustie
12.30 am in Eastern Australia and I have just finished yesterdays productions from my two favourite RU-vidrs , Mustie1 in NH. USA and Marty T 10,000 miles away in New Zealand. They are the two most commonsense calm approach guys there are. They encounter totally different issues but I always learn something. Many thanks - and now it's way past my bed time
Thanks for the Tip on Marty T. went and checked out his channel and to my surprise found out it is the guy from the Angry Ram channel. Didn't know he had another channel.
Recommend South Main Auto channel, mostly automotive but Eric knows his stuff and the faultfinding videos are excellent. Also Project Binky from Obsession Motorsport, two crazy Brits squeezing a Celica 4x4 engine and running gear into a classic Mini, very funny but amazing engineering.
Best learning yet, I have a very similar engine in my log splitter, now fixed thank you very much. and as a bonus for me, my spare generator that I've done (nearly) everything to, but wouldn't run, added a teeny bit of oil and runs like a charm, pesky over zealous low oil cutout. Winter here, off grid, so very appreciated thank you old chap.
Man I love your videos, and how you stay so up beat and never give up on any task no matter what the issue is. I’m always looking forward to your next surprise fix man . Keep em comin.🤙🤙
What I think would have been an interesting add to the video is when you brought it back and told him what was wrong with it! As a side - see if you can get him to let you rebuild the pump and make a video of that. Something I would (and probably others) would be interested in seeing.
Inspired me to get a Lawnmower running that’s been sitting for a couple of years. Checked Air gap and re-gapped, dumped carburetor bowl. First pull. Thank you.
Although I’m a day late in watching this video,,,, from the first few minutes I knew it was a coil issue.... I used to pressure wash restaurants and I enjoyed messing with these engines.... great video..!!!!!
I understand you clarified that it was not your cell phone however, If you want to have your phone on while you are filming that is your choice. You have a life outside these videos and people need to understand that. You record for several hours and then edit it into a small 1hour ish video for our entertainment. what we see in 1hour ish is in some case several hours of your life. Don't listen to these idiots complaining about a "cell phone" type sound. We Love your videos Keep them going!!!
Right from the get go, when that chord pulled out of your hand, I figured bad ignition timing. A lesson for you....it's not always a fuel problem. I enjoy watching you very much, and I'm always amazed at how calm you seem to be no matter what the issue.
I have been subscribed for years I like his videos he explains what he's doing very well I have learned a lot from watching him work. Thank you for making videos.
I set those engines at .004 in my shop and they run great and stops the kick back. The little white choke arm has a knob in the end that is used to plug the gas line. Thanks for great video's.
I don’t know why I watched this to the finish because I will never attempt what you did. Very interesting and relaxing to watch you work out the problem one step at a time. Perfect camera angle and volume. Thanks
I can't describe how much satisfaction I got from that final wash of the pressure washer. And using fixed machine itself for that was only a cherry on top.
Mustie1: I’ve been watching you’re videos for years and this actually my first comment ever, your videos are educational and fun to watch. I’ve learned a lot watching your videos. Keep up the good work. You’re awesome!
I think this qualifies as a "Who'da thunk it!" fix ... for you and what sounded like a mechanically able owner. Nice trouble shooting! Thats a fix I will have to commit to memory. Thanks for sharing 👍
I should learn to not read the comments before watching the video! You just gave away the ending, and it’s not your fault, it’s mine for skipping to the last page of the book, lol!
It just goes to show, when you want to give up because you can't figure it out..there's always a LOGICAL solution..you just need patience, knowledge and the skill and experience to sort it out..Well done Mustie1..And the pleasure come from having achieved and overcome!!..Paul UK..Love your vids...
Wow-11K likes-awesome!-thanks so much Mustie-I've "modified" tools, like grinding off the wings on screwdrivers, and thinning down wrenches-kind of voids the warranty-lol-thanks again!
You were teaching today. Very Impressive. I went through aircraft mechanics school back in the early sixties. My best instructors delivered their lessons as you did today. Large aircraft engines (3-4000 hp) have incredibly complicated carburetors the size of a toaster oven. My carburetor instructor was one of the best. You remind me of my best instructors. Thanks
Mustie, this video is awesome. taught me tons. Got may hands on an old craftsman rototiller, crank case and fuel take full of water and piston stuck. Tore it down, new carb and got the thing to run( one of those briggs carbs with too damn much linkage). Ran a few minutes then quit...would not restart. Got fed up...then watched this video. I remembered during my attempts to restart the tiller the pull cord would jerk from my hand. Aha, mustie says timing issue. Checked fly wheel key and coil gap. Viola, set the gap at 12 thou and the booger started on 3rd pull, purring like it oughta. Thx bro. I am hooked on your video lessons.
I worked at a shop that sold small engine implements. The Honda GX engine has a good reputation. Rules for pressure washers: 1.Don't let them freeze. 2.Don't let them heat. 3.Don't run them dry. Looks like the thermal relief plug opened up on this unit. Good video - didn't see the backwards coil coming. Good job!
One thing that wasn’t covered on the fuel side was to check the fuel bowl retaining bolt, it could’ve had blocked passage, sometimes it’s the issue on no fuel since its the lowest point in the bowl, and dirt will settle there after sitting for long periods of time then when started it gets sucked in the ports. This was an excellent video, thanks for sharing.
I appreciate that you sort think out loud. That benefits me. Your thought process helps teach me what my thought process should. To begin, my thought process was, "Oh, shit" and went no further. Now I'm ready to plunge in on my project. Thanks
Over the past few days I've been watching your vids I've learned a lot some that I've needed to know some that I'm not sure but if the situation comes up I'll know thanks for posting these educational vids they are also entertaining especially the jokes LOL
Thanks mate. You have now added to my repertoire of problem solving procedures...with small engines we can expect all manner of 'previous interventions' lol ... no mistake...
my guy has a gas powered pressure washer that i have broken the rip cord ( as we now call it )so many times it s just a pain in the butt to replace all the time. so i asked if i couldn t just jumper it to get it to run? he came up w/ a socket an extention and a cordless drill that he put the socket on the big bolt head in the center of the motor pulled the trigger and got the motor spinning and quick as a bunny it was running! so now i just start the darn thing like that whenever i use it. it saves so much time and effort since the rip cord doesn t need to be on it now!
Another great job Mustie. Love seeing your dog too. My lab, a five year old English Lab looks exactly like yours. Mine is recovering from her second ACL surgery. Thankfully we had insurance for it. Hopefully yours doesn’t have knee issues. Great dogs.
love the videos mustie1 ,just a little tip for the future when taking the fuel supply off the carb you can use the choke lever to block fuel pipe as it has a built in stud on it ,keep up the good work.
My Sears pressure washer has been kicking back like that since it was new, but only after it has been started once. My neighbor said that it was the valve adjustment but now that I have watched your video I have something else to look at in case the valve adjustment doesn't fix it. Thanks for the information! Jim
