Greetings, everyone! Welcome to The Commander Tavern! I am Demented Kirby and this is the 17th episode of the 2nd season of one of the series on this channel, The Brewery. This series is all about brewing and deck techs - hopefully showcasing the spiciest of brews!
This episode of The Brewery is my take on Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded. This deck is all about cheating in fatties as quickly as possible for value. The deck has a lot of synergy in taking the most advantage possible out of the creatures you're sneaking in. If you want to see the complete decklist for this deck, you can find it at this link:
tappedout.net/mtg-decks/purpho...
As I mentioned in the video, these are a just few examples of achieving Turn 1 Blightsteel Colossus. Keep in mind that there are many different ways to assemble these hands since you can swap out some rituals for others if you have Ancient Tomb or Crystal Vein in your opening hand, as well. Since I wanted to get this video out as quickly as possible, I will continue to update these possible hands later on.
EXAMPLE #1:
OPENING HAND:
Blightsteel Colossus
(any land that isn't Temple of the False God)
Mana Crypt
Mana Vault
Simian Spirit Guide or Lotus Petal
Seething Song
(extra slot)
STEPS:
1. land + Mana Crypt = 1CC
2. 1 for Mana Vault = CCCCC
3. Simian Spirit Guide = R
4. CCR for Seething Song = CCCRRRRR
5. CCCRR for Purphoros
6. RRR for Blightsteel Colossus
EXAMPLE #2:
OPENING HAND:
Blightsteel Colossus
Mountain
Simian Spirit Guide
Lotus Petal
Irencrag Feat
Mana Crypt or Sol Ring
Desperate Ritual or Pyretic Ritual
STEPS (with Mana Crypt):
1. Mountain + Lotus Petal + Simian Spirit Guide + Mana Crypt = CCRRR
2. CR for Desperate Ritual = CRRRRR
3. CRRR for Irencrag Feat = RRRRRRRRR
4. RRRRR for Purphoros
5. RRR for Blightsteel Colossus
(with Sol Ring):
1. Mountain for Sol Ring
2. Lotus Petal + Simian Spirit Guide + Sol Ring = CCRR
3. CR for Desperate Ritual = CRRRR
4. CRRR for Irencrag Feat = RRRRRRRR
5. RRRRR for Purphoros
6. RRR for Blightsteel Colossus
EXAMPLE #3:
OPENING HAND:
(any land that isn't Temple of the False God)
Simian Spirit Guide
Lotus Petal
Seething Song
Irencrag Feat
Blighsteel Colossus
(extra slot)
STEPS:
1. land + Lotus Petal + Simian Spirit Guide = 1RR
2. 1RR for Seething Song = RRRRR
3. RRRR for Irencrag Feat = RRRRRRRR
4. RRRRR for Purphoros
5. RRR for Blightsteel Colossus
As always, thanks to all you viewers for your interest! Comment down below how else would you build Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded. What types of creatures would you include? Are there any particular creatures you feel I missed out on? Any pet cards you wanna include to take advantage of his ability? You can also tweet me @CommanderTavern.

CORRECTION: Mycosynth Lattice WON’T work for cheating in the eldrazi with Purphoros. But you can still do so with Painter’s Servant. In any case, you can also cheat in the eldrazi with Sneak Attack. Instead of Mycosynth Lattice, run Ilharg, the Raze-Boar. You can cheat another fatty when it attacks and when it’s sacrificed at the end of the turn, it returns to your library 3rd from the top.

@@LivingThing28 You're welcome! He's certainly strong, but I don't think he's ban-worthy. So far you can't actually win a match Turn 1. That is possible though with K'rrik, Emry, and Urza. And they're not banned. So I think Purphoros is safe to build around :D

@@LivingThing28 Ouch! I got upset when Paradox Engine got banned but only because it was really key in the 3 decks I had it in. Fortunately, I got them when they came out and were super cheap, so I didn't lose as much as people who were buying them later on when it got super hyped. Well, if you build a commander cube, you can put Leovold in it as well as all those cards and have card draw / wheeling effects be one of the archetypes of the cube ;) You can put whatever you want in a cube so maybe that way you don't feel like it's a total loss.

Maybe Ancient Stone Idol, a 12/12 trample that when it’s sacked due to purphoros you get a 6/12 trample
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
Ooh! That's a pretty good suggestion. You can then repeatedly get more 6/12 tramplers thanks to Feldon.

This deck is basicly.... discard youre Hand: destroy target Player...... And then die to the rest of the table.....
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
Lol, pretty much! But it's fine because as likely as it is to get a Turn 1 Blightsteel Colossus, it's not as likely to be an every day occurrence. Well, I guess a part of playing red is to live dangerously XD Besides, in a 4-player game you have to take on 2 players at once with monoRed. As long as you don't run out of steam you can really put the pressure on those players and potentially win it. In a 3-player game, you just made the game a 1v1 so those odds are even better ;)

I think that an equally dastardly play is cheating in Dragon Mage on Turn 1. Everyone's already chosen their opening hand and have probably already planned their following three turns. So Purphoros just straight up says "nope!" Oh, and you get 7 new cards after emptying your hand, too.
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
That's right! That's dastardly indeed!

The haste part isn't relevant you say? Yeah, I'd rather win this turn if I can and not have to wait to sneak the creature in after 3 opponents has had a chance to exile my Purphorus or kill me. The whole point is that it's a 1 shot fatty when you need it, wether it's on your turn or the opponents.
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
Of course, that's entirely true.
@aidencrabtree1755

That's a pretty good brew on such short notice so nice job. However I have to ask, Do you think that this is better than Illharg? I think the repeatable use of the same cards in illharg just makes it more resilient and a better commander overall.
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
Thanks! The thing will Ilharg is that you're limited to one creature per combat. With Purphoros you can sneak in as many creatures as you can pay for his ability. So at least in this case, I'm going to have to side with Purphoros v2.0. That being said, Ilharg would still be great as one of the 99 in order to provide more redundancy.
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
Something I forgot to mention: you can't use Ilharg defensively. With Purphoros you can rattlesnack fatties from your hand in response to an attack in order to kill the attacking creature. Another things, Ilharg depends on the combat step. If you can't attack, then you can't use it. I'm not saying Ilharg is bad - it's a damn good card; I just don't think it's inherently better than the new Purphoros.

Hey, amazing deck as always. is it possible to have this deck built for duel commander and still have turn 1 plays. The ban list has sol ring, mana vault and mana crypt on it.
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
Thanks! Glad you like it! There sure is! Since most of the fast plentiful mana is banned in 1v1, it's not as consistent to pull off. But, it's still possible; you'd need the following godhand: Simian Spirit Guide, Lotus Petal, Seething Song, Irencrag Feat, Blighsteel Colossus, and any land that isn't Temple of the False God. Steps: 1. Play a land. Then tap it for any mana. 2. Cast Lotus Petal. Then activate it for R. 3. Exile Simian Spirit Guide from your hand for R. 4. Use the 1RR to cast Seething Song. You now have RRRRR in your mana pool. 5. Cast Irencrag Feat. You now have RRRRRRRR in your mana pool. 6. Cast Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded. 7. Use the remaining RRR to sneak in Blightsteel Colossus. And voila! What's great about that hand is that you only really need 6 cards to pull it off. Meaning that you can at least mulligan up to 3 times to try and find it. Or, mulligan down to 5 and luckily enough draw into the 6th one at your 1st turn's draw step.

Is it worth it to add Daretti in this deck? I mean it can bring back some of ur really good artifacts...
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
Daretti can definitely be worth a slot in the deck. That way you can cheat in the artifact creatures you had to sacrifice to Purphoros's ability. That way you get even more value out of the deck.
@LivingThing28

Just saw this combo. I sense a banning
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
Purphoros is definitely strong. It was nerfed for standard but in the command zone, the only cards in your deck that can't be cheated in are colorless creatures because everything else has to be a red or artifact creature - which is pretty much what you're limited to anyways. But Painter's Servant is what allows you to cast all those beefy eldrazi. I don't know if it'll warrant a ban, though.
@IAmPhase
@IAmPhase 4 года назад
Why do you have Eldrazi in your deck? You can't cheat them into play with Purphoros...
@TheCommanderTavern
@TheCommanderTavern 4 года назад
Painter's Servant makes all my cards red and Mycosynth Lattice makes them all artifact. Having either of them in play makes me able to cheat them into play with Purphoros. They're the last two cards I mention in the video.
@IAmPhase

@@TheCommanderTavern Mycosynth Lattice makes all permanents on the battlefield artifacts, not cards in your hand. You can't use Mycosynth with Purphoros to cheat in Eldrazi.
