“Protection from” grants a very specific set of abilities to a creature. A creature with protection from red can’t be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, enchanted, or equipped by anything red. The thing that comes up most commonly is targeting. A red card that says “destroy all creatures” will still destroy a protection from red creature because it isn’t violating any of the protection rules’ clauses. Purphoros has a static ability that grants haste that will still apply as well, and if you throw out a big creature with him, then equip the sword, it will still be sacrificed end of turn. @@NitpickingNerds yeah or alternately it's just one of those cards that everyone knows they need to hold up answers for so you'll very rarely get anything more valuable than a removal spell out of someone's hand, which for 3 mana isn't terrible but it's still not really what you want to be doing for 3 mana. to each their own, though.

@@NitpickingNerds i will say it is fun to hit someone with their own blightsteel. if there were more in my playgroup i might throw Backlash in a few decks, too.

@@kdchmln Blightsteel is tooo good to not put in. With Jewelled lotus and mana crypt you can turn 2 somebody out of the game

I think this is a card that will be tamer in practice than it looks on paper. It's quite pricey, at eight mana total for a fatty with haste
