We've mentioned it before: we love islands! We all know by now how important mulch is to fixing your soil, but we found ourselves getting sick from kicking up woodchips in the yard, and wanted to find a way to better manage our mulch. We started connecting the berms of each of our trees until we had created little "islands" of trees in our yard! Another huge benefit to making sections like this is that you can replicate flood irrigation in a way! By flooding the entire growing area of your fruit trees, rather than just watering around each individual tree's rootball, you can fix a lot more soil at one time without any extra effort.
We wanted to demonstrate a basic idea of how we make these islands. We use dirt (the leftovers from planting trees, plus anything else laying around the yard) to connect several plants with one large berm. Get creative here; we love to incorporate a shade tree, some fruit trees, vines, groundcovers, shrubs, anything really! When you look at nature, you'll notice that plants like to be tucked in close together, so don't be too scared about putting your plants in close proximity to one another. You can always prune :)

Fyi ONLY, good to let the water soak in long enough so any clay does not clump & bind. Didn't look too bad there...possibly, due to building up a layer of organics over time :) Everything in moderation, too...I am not sure you need that much emulsion to be effective (that is the key--what minimal level achieves that ? Best practices) , though you watered it in well. Fun stuff...

Yes we like to do deep soaks. The amount of fish emulsion depends on the brand, some are more concentrated than others

What a great idea! I think I’ll steal😊 We have almost 1/4 acre and we’re just getting started after removing (as best we could) thick bermuda. Islands will be perfect for some of our existing trees and to prep for new ones. Piling the mulch on about a foot deep has helped with the grass a bit but it’s always a huge battle :( Keep up the good work - I love your videos! Your yard is beautiful.

Thanks for the love!! Try putting a layer or two of cardboard down on top of the bermuda, then cover with wood chips. This helps us immensely in our front yard! Keep us posted! :D

How long does that depression flood for? mangoes have very limited flood tolerance and are epic root rotters. it looks above level from the side, but if water can stay in that area for a day or two, like during a flood or storm, it could smoke the roots on your mango. Dump in a lot of sand in the rootzone to promote extra drainage if there is any risk. Mangoes love really sandy soil. Good work on the seaweed and fish emulsion. Human urine mimics miracle grow as well; I use it for anything in ground (salt will flush from the soil), and it is usable in pots even on salt sensitive plants such as avocados when dilluted maybe 6 to 1 water to urine and when the rootzones are flushed regularly with rainwater or non high total dissolved solid water. Love your garden and love your unbridled, limitless passion and gusto for the beauty of nature. You are a Phenomenal Rainbow Warrior.

The water drains in about 10 minutes from this new 'island', but almost instantly in existing islands. We only get about 8-10 inches of rain each year where we live, so flooding from a storm isn't a huge concern for us. Thanks for the info! :D

I don't put Burms around my trees especially avocados because here in San Diego we get rain in the winter and the burms would fill up with water and wet feet and cold soil can cause avocado root rot. You guys should be fine because you get most of your rain during the summer and the ground will dry up faster. If you get rain during the cold months I would allow the water to escape out of the burm through a small opening that you can always fill back in later.

Great point--though we do occasionally have a mid to late winter rainy season also). You can solve that easily by building a thick berm, but then also planting the avocado's in raised sections (maybe a tad lower than berm height) in the interior. Avocado's are tough here otherwise, though--it needs to be nursed by taller trees to typically survive in our hot, interior low desert...and then they never really become "profilic" fruiters...

The yard looks like you are in San Diego, not Phoenix. Looks beautiful, but do you worry about the drainage and it causing root rot since the water looks like it is not draining much or very slowly?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
That's what we're going for, thank you! :D We will continue planting out this area over time, and now that there is mulch and some microbial life, the drainage comes in time. And then always water less frequently for a longer period of time :D Thanks for bringing that up!
@jeff6899
@jeff6899 5 лет назад
Garry..Great pt--The best idea would be to create more of a swale, aka apermaculture dryland swale) so that you have berms on both sides of the swale but the interior planted berm can be a slight grade lower than the exterior berm. Hence, would hold some water, but also allow heavy rains to drain into the swale, for later use.

Yes exactly :D We added about a foot of wood chips and leaves, it's down to only a few inches now but the soil is looking great! :D

What you are doing is really nice, but you must make sure that trees are planted with enough space for it to grow independent. IF they are to closed to each pother they will not bear fruits in abundance.

any tips for keeping the dogs out of the garden without having to fence it off?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
It takes a bit of training, go outside with them for a couple days until they understand that the garden isn't for them. We also plant lettuces around the yard that they can munch on, so they don't need to get into the beds :D Good luck!

You guys don't do the whole wood chip thing?
@GreeniesGarden

We do, but we keep like it contained in "islands" which are basically berms that connect multiple trees together :D
