Most large under 10m fishing boats around the UK have a crew of two or three. If you are going to successfully operate single handed, you need to be to be extremely well organised, extremely fit, and extremely targeted in what you do. Mikey Taylor-Firth, operating PW81 Julie Girl off the Lizard peninsula, is such a person, having organised and constructed the layout on the boat (including welding and boarding the pounds) for single handed operation of monk nets (only) 6-12 miles off the Lizard. On 11th October 2012, in addition to monk, there was a substantial catch of brown crab, and also lobster crawfish (all of which were borderline or undersize and returned alive), cuckoo ray, pollock and bream. Altogether, one of the tidiest operations I have evaluated for Pisces-RFR.
This is a long video for those who need to see the detail. To skip to particular bits:
00.00 - 03.30 - trip out, hauling of the first anchor line
03.30 - 15.30 - hauling and extracting from net.
15.30 - 17.40 - hauling of end anchor line, recovery of dahn buoy. At the start of the sequence Mikey explains about how the net is set, depth etc
17.40 - 19.00 - taping up of lobsters, checking catch
19.00 - 19.38 - hauling of second net - actually end of sequence, hauling the end anchor line, just for the record (I was doing stills photography during the second haul)
19.38 - 20.05 - return to sea of live crawfish, washing down deck
20.05 - 25-26 - processing of the 13 monkfish (cutting out liver, tails, cheeks) and pollock, brill etc.
25.00 - end - final wash down
For a write-up of this fishery, and the stills photography from this trip, go to the Pisces-RFR website: www.pisces-rfr.org/UK/Fisherie...

Hi David - thank you. Yes a cod -the monk nets are in the water for 2-3 days, making cod and other whitefish caught early inedible; In the footage off Lucy Marianna you can see a hake going back.The flesh of the monk is more robust though I've never done a blind tasting. And yes they look on film as if they would be good pot bait but once the cheek muscles have been cut out it is mostly thin skin stretched over the bone frame of that giant mouth - bit like an old world war I biplane!

Hi - I think the simple answer is market fashion rather than logic! In the old days they used to be landed whole. But there is very little meat in the wings or in the lower jaw, the mouth is like a trap door, pulled closed by big muscles in the upper jaw that you can see being cut out in other videos here. The new development was japanese restaurants saying that they wanted the liver, which was previously discarded.

No doubt about it. Mind you, provides a useful base load to keep some income coming in, and manageable most of the time with the bigger mesh nets and the size of both brown & spiders here. After above average stock recruitment 1st w jumbo whiting, then cod, then haddock could b quiet period 4 whitefish coming-if the juvenile fish surveys r 2 b believed-so crabs could b important. The Beans started doing own cooking & picking, made a big difference to economics, other boats now add their catches

What's in a name: Angler fish vs Monk for Lophius (latin name) species? - Thanks IOW Dave for you comment - for some reason I can't reply directly to your post. Yes, angler or angler fish is the name used by scientists and natural history people in the UK, other names are goosefish in North America and frogfish is another - they can look a bit frog like when seen alive or on the deck. There was a now very rare (due to fishing one would expect) very interesting type of shark, half way towards a ray in shape but much larger also called monkfish (perhaps more often Angel fish - latin Squatina). Which one came first who knows - but if you do a google search for either fishing or chef/ recipes it will be referring to this species. I'm aware of the various names but stuck with common usage. I've not heard the fishers call it angler, and the type of gear used is always referred to as monk gear in fisher to fisher conversations. There is no mention of either in Carew's 1769 Survey of Cornwall, including the types of fish and fisheries (which can be downloaded off Gutenburg Press)

Dying breed nice video I skippered offshore boats for years left 2006. But getting the pulls to get a little boat for a past time these days it's hard to get ground every one shooting with tenths between em. Never really escaped the lure of fishing again but couldn't do the 10 day trip no more. Good luck to you my friend with the black tape and out the loop fishing policies stacked against you . Offshore large boats are starting to become a burden kW hours ,quota's I think your find inshore small boats will be the winners all the best.
@malcolmmacgarvin6998
@malcolmmacgarvin6998 9 лет назад
Thanks Stay Lit - I think the small boats have a niche, but lets hope policy for the bigger boats gets sorted, as there is a role for them too for sure - I had an interview that went into Fishing News a couple of months back about balanced harvesting - to think about taking constant proportion of of fish out, per different size classes regardless of species - or at least as regardless as possible - as part of a possible way of simplifying the regs

It shows some cruelty towards crabs (cracking their legs an all while alive), but what an experienced sailor 8 thanks for filming and sharing Monk fish is delicious, in Spain it's a tapa delicacy (named rape- pronounce ra-peh), in France also (lotte - pronounce lot)
@malcolmmacgarvin6998
@malcolmmacgarvin6998 9 лет назад
Thanks nanba - Yes, I think seeing what is involved in fishing certainly makes you pause for thought - Its better to be confronted with it rather than just see it in a packet and not think about it, and then people can make their own decision whether they are ok with it - I look at it as how much better or worse it is to the other ways that fish are going to die eventually, none of which is particularly good, and what the crabs do to the things they eat ... Breaking the crabs out will usually depend on how much time the fishermen have got, how tangled the crabs are in the net, how edible they are (if they have just moulted the flesh will be very watery). I don't think they would do it if the crabs were easy to get out, and as their level of fishing in that bay has been pretty constant since the 70s, the crabs will likely sustain the level.

@Mikey721000
@Mikey721000 5 лет назад
Michael Hall in our nets with such a large mesh size we hardly ever see any undersized catch. I try to pick out as much whole as I can but if they come up and are damaged by the net or hauler they will not survive. A snapped leg can be treated by making it ‘shed’ it but if the damage is worse then they will die in storage and kill the crabs around them
@geraldswain3259
@geraldswain3259 7 лет назад
why is he ripping the legs off those lovely big crabs and throwing it all away when it is so valuable a commodity.
@malcolmmacgarvin6998
@malcolmmacgarvin6998 7 лет назад
A reasonable question.The short answer is that the bits being discarded are not a valuable commodity. The longer answer starts by saying that unless the fisher is mad, it is a safe bet that if there is a willing and legal buyer then they will retain the catch. So there will be a reason why they don't retain all of the crabs caught. The most likely reasons are that, by 2012, for various reasons, there were a lot more boats targeting crab, and local buyers were limiting *how much* they would buy, and *what* they would buy. Even when the market is not over-supplied buyers don't want to buy from boats that have a reputation for including light-weight crabs that have recently moulted and yet to grow into the larger shell. The market can have strong preferences either hen or cock crabs, and that also affects what buyers will buy and how much. Then there will be diseased crabs which are unmarketable and which are killed. The fisher will also be making an assessment of how tangled the crab is, and how likely/how long it will take to disentangle it - it is more difficult to extract more recently moulted crab crabs intact. They will also make an assessment of how much time they have, and how many crabs have been caught - less care is taken with a big catch than a few individuals. Unlike other fisheries, netters are generally legally allowed to retain a certain weight of detached crab claws, because of the difficulties of extracting whole crab. For some parts of the UK it is 70kg retained on the boat, in Cornwall from 2011 it was 30kg caught within 6 miles of the coast. In addition to these rational reasons, some netters, who are principally targeting finfish, and who see a lot of high value fish ruined by crab for market, or entirely consumed, don't feel very sentimental about them. However, as of 2014 , in 2016 the most recent year for which Cefas (the scientific body in England doing the stock assessments) has published an assessment, brown crab were believed by them to be at or close to the stock size producing the maximum sustainable yield. One might take that with a pinch of salt, but brown crab wasn't believed to be in danger of collapse. The major issue was and is over-supply of the market, to which the inshore netters response is likely that they have been there since the 1970s; that their numbers and fishing effort has declined in the last decade; and that if there are any issues with the crab fisheries, their impact is small compared to new boats in the area specifically targeting crab, and without effort limits.

Returned alive???!I live in Australia, and I know that your brown crabs are almost identical to our mud crabs. I was appalled to see you not just remove one of the crabs claws (which they can recover from by slowly growing a new claw over several shell moults) but destroying both claws leaves the crab to starve!!!
@malcolmmacgarvin6998
@malcolmmacgarvin6998 8 лет назад
+William Gordge Fair comment. The short answer is that, if it were me, is that - on the ethics side - I would kill them before returning them if they had no claws left. However, in terms of sustainability of the crab population, catch levels are monitored If you are concerned you should contact Cornish IFCA, www.cornwall-ifca.gov.uk and forward them the link to the video. They have the legal responsibility for ensuring sustainable fisheries in the area.

Should not be throwing dead fish back and removing the claws and legs from a crab and throwing them back is wrong. If you don't want them, give them to friends.
@malcolmmacgarvin6998
@malcolmmacgarvin6998 7 лет назад
Thanks Vivian. On the crab - See answer to Gerald Swain and to William Gordge. Regarding the fish, this particular metier - large mesh monk tangle gear - is left to soak usually for 48 hrs, sometimes 72. Monk is a robust fish and the flesh does not deteriorate and affect marketability in this period. But for something like cod, haddock, etc, if it is caught very early after deployment, it will deteriorate and will be unmarketable. So that's why some fish are retained and others immediately discarded - it depends how long they have been in the net. The catch of fish other than monk is rather limited with these large mesh nets. Friends probably wouldn't appreciate a recently moulted or diseased crab, or a moldering fish anymore than buyers.

Why doe she break the claws off that huge crab and then throw it back? How wasteful.
@malcolmmacgarvin6998
@malcolmmacgarvin6998 9 лет назад
There are a lot of reasons Jonny906 why crabs may be broken out of the net rather than extracted. Generally the fisher won't be throwing away anything for which there is a market, so it is not wasteful in that sense - if it is diseased, if it has died or dying (=slow moving) in the net the merchants won't take it; if it has just moulted the flesh will be watery and unmarketable; also we as consumers mostly want the white meat in the claws rather than the dark 'liver' that is in the shell, so there is a limit to how many bodies rather than claws the merchants will take - there are often regulations limiting the number of claws (rather than whole crabs) retained in some areas to try and nudge this in the direction of more whole crab bought. More broadly the fisherman is making an assessment of how tangled the crab is in the net, and so the practicality of extracting it whole. If they have just moulted it more difficult to get the crab out without breaking limbs accidentally anyway (and is unmarketable see above). And it will depend on how many crabs are caught - fishers generally spend less time extracting if they are overwhelmed. And yes there is some resentment among the fishers when the crabs are getting first to damage fish otherwise worth (for monk) around £8 - $12 per kilo - they might take time to extract them carefully in the first year or so, but the empathy wears off after a while - doesn't excuse it but does help explain it! The amount of time spent extracting varies from fisher to fisher - Chris Bean on Lady Hamilton (see other videos) is at the top end, but also very skilled at rapid extraction. Fishers likely believe that it is going to get recycled pretty quickly into other crabs - the fishing intensity with nets has been pretty constant/ declining slightly in this area over the last decade and more, and crab numbers and landing have held up.
@Naplesfrank154
@Naplesfrank154 5 лет назад
Jonny906 More than likely the crab was undersized and he didn’t want to waste his time untangling it out of the net. The authorities should see that and take away his fishing license or give him a huge fine. He’s no fisherman in my eyes.
@Naplesfrank154

@Deane Minister evidently, you are no too bright. He never checked to see the status of the crab, plus the first crab he took was loaded with eggs. Is that how they fish in Europe? Raping the ocean. BY the way, you better get some sanitary napkins because your mangina is leaking. The guy may be fishing but he really isn’t a concerned fisherman. Thank God Florida banned all net fishing. Absolutely correct..... I've heard of spider crabs being treated same but I hear that is not necessary to rip the claws off because the body meat is nice to eat.........When we were diving the 'others' only would eat the white crab meat so I had a hell of a time gorging on the firm tasty brown meat ..... a bit of vinegar on it & away I went....... I could not believe my eyes when I saw what he did - both claws off & then back into the briny for a slow death..... disgraceful no less.

I had never had any allergies in my life, I could eat a vegetable straight out the ground, eat nuts,celery,carrots ,fruit etc but one day I had monk fish and it triggered an allergic reaction so now I can't eat any vegetable unless its cooked only tinned fruit or fruit inside a tough outer melon,banana,orange and nuts only if they are roasted. The fish was not worth the hype, rubbish compared to bass or nice haddock,cod. Are monk fish known to cause that sort of thing? Ruined my culinary life and dangerous.

Nothing worse than crabs in a gill net.

Spiny lobsters and scorpion fish are way worse. Dogfish suck too.

Throwing dead by-catch back over the side like that is so wasteful! No respect for the sea at all.

why worry that much, it's food for crabs and other species, they will have a easy meal.
