I didn't march in college but in high school, and yeah we were very much jealous and begged the band director to let us play more up to date songs and dance like the majority Black schools did. He chose the theme for Shaft and Pretty Fly for a White guy. It was a cool experience but we definitely sucked by comparison. I didn't understand or realize at the time what the song choices signaled but yeahhhhh that's South Alabama for you. 😵‍💫

While my school was real mixed racially the marching band was that traditional stuff so I never got into it. Then I caught a game at Norfolk State... Since then I can't help myself but to enjoy hcbu marching bands

We may be white bread but our family has been playing percussion and many other instruments in Marching bands for 4 generations now. When we were still in school everyone in the band lost their shit when when my Mother put my sisters quads on and killed it! Her mother was also a drummer and her father before. On my paternal side there are many musicians as well! Anyways we have always and still support and go see as many Bands as we can! I think my Mom has watched Drumline about a million times now! And my sensitive butt cries sometimes when I watch especially Southern universities play! The passion, talent, and the memories they are making just choke me up❤

My daughter was a member of a PWI band and I loved it. The structure, teaching the importance of the uniform, being one of one, analyzing many band styles. Each performance was geared towards a competition. Teaching each position of the band. Giving back to the community, self worth, determination, looking forward. Not to say other bands don’t have it but going from an predominantly African American high school band to this was very different and pleasing. Different stroke for different folks. LVB always has love in our hearts.

As a tuba in a PWI band, it physically hurts me every time they tell me to stop cranking. Except they call it "overblowing" because they refuse to admit cranking is the way the damn thing is meant to be played.
