Wish they had gotten someone else to do this interview. This guy had the nerve to tell the audience not to ask Emitt any stupid questions when he was the one making all the stupid comments. Emitt is in a class all his own and the whole McCartney comparison should not have been brought up. It is obvious that Emitt is a shy and humble person and the whole interview format should have been done differently. Love your work Emitt!!!

Felt so bad for him--he'd been through enough crap--then has to put up with this idiot hack asking lame questions and combining it with dumb comments. And even though he has left this world, he will not be forgotten by those who loved and appreciated his amazing talent --RIP Emmit--and thank you!

I first heard of Emitt in 1970,when I was 13.He was played regularly on a local radio station located in Gaithersburg MD.The DJ who played him,was Barry Richards,who also had a UHF(REMEMBER THAT!!!)TV show called Turn on TV.He interviewed Emitt then(he was 20),I still remember that interview and how impressed I was by him(Emitt).Haved loved the album until this day (and beyond).Emitt Rhodes,one of the greatest influences on my life!!!!!!!!!!

Des Barres was in a band called Detective. The people at their label often referred to them as Defective.

the interview quickly collapsed after the 4 minute mark, after Des barres unnecessary quip. Dear Emitt zoned right out after that ,and left shortly thereafter. Emitt a Class Act!

ER is awesome. All of his solo albums are among my favorites, especially the three on which he did it all himself. ER's humility in dealing with the inept interviewer is endearing. He handled the bit about McCartney very well. It's no insult to be compared favorably with one of the most gifted singer/songwriters of the past several decades. I'd love to see "One Man Beatles." I'd love to hear more music from ER, an enormously talented and gifted artist.

Wow, I had forgotten that I had commented on this video 9 years ago. I found out about this event the same day it happened but couldn't go because the tickets were already sold out. I missed my chance to see the great Emitt Rhodes. I hope that Emitt is in a much better and happier place now. At least we can take comfort knowing that his wonderful music is still with us to help us get through these difficult times.

lincbond442, agreed, what you said. A deeper, more sensitive interview would be welcome.

Love Emitt's music. This is the first time I've ever heard the man speak. This interview was bizarre. It's safe to say he is still an enigma. And call me crazy, but something in his mannerisms and appearance remind me of Jay Leno! I hope life has been good for him even without the level of fame and recognition he deserved.

I could see Joaquin Phoenix packing on some weight and growing out his salt/pepper hair to portray him in a biopic.

Oh man, get real ! The self title album, Emitt Rhodes, was a de facto homage to The Beatles, and McCartney in particular. Denying this, is just ridiculous. Notice that Emitt didn't bother denying that, at least in this interview. Emitt was a chameleon, musically. He could imitate styles very well. Of course, later, he recorded things that didn't sound like The Beatles, but they were stylized toward popular styles. He was a very good musician, writer and singer, but was not terribly original when it came to style. He produced some beautiful music. He left behind some great stuff to listen to.

Take a good listen to this guy, because he's right in the same league as the people who probably ended Emitt's career; a real music biz/industry/P.T. Barnum huckster. As the gentleman below stated; "the situation was not a good one," but, I'm quite sure..., could have been handled with far more sensitivity and class; and Emitt deserved that much. You're interviewing a man who's life/youth/art for the most part... was negotiated and bargained away; and that's a very painful scene, folks.

The interviewer is a fool. Emitt is a real guy. The interviewer is wearing shades. Emitt is real and he is not. That says it all.

Yes, a terrible interviewer. Emitt was and is a brilliant musician. I've never had the chance to meet him, but I knew some of his family. I really want to see "The One Man Beatles" movie but have no idea how to get it. Does anyone know if it's available on DVD?

Hmmm, would I be as hard on Michael Des Barres as other people here? True, he did very little to get Emitt to open up and probably embarrassed him in the process, but parallels can be drawn: Michael's band, Detective (with Tony Kaye, formerly of and soon to be back with Yes) could not get out of Led Zeppelin's shadow, despite having some really solid tunes (especially "Help Me Up"(?) and "Got Enough Love"... The latter even made it to WKRP as Scum of the Earth!) and having Led Zeppelin themselv

What a horribly blown opportunity. Des Barres seems clueless about Mr. Rhodes, and how to read him, and how he might have been able to lead him into a comfort zone where he would have opened up. Even the shyest, most self-effacing artist will talk about themselves and their work if they feel comfortable.
@lincbond442

The comments Des Barres made about people in the audience wanting to sleep with Emitt and the remark about some guy showing his arse really made Emitt uncomfortable. I agree that this was a horribly blown opportunity. I found out about this event the day it happened and the tickets were already sold out. I would have been really upset if I had been there and seen this play out in really time. What a shame.

Emitt Rhodes refused to release ANYTHING that wasn't a gem. It's sad that he paid such a heavy price for maintaining his uniformly high standards.
