In this video we will do something never done before….we will compare 15 amp modeling pedalboards vs a real JCM 800…NO TALK, only sounds…the pedalboard compared are: Quad Cortex, Fractal FM3, Line 6 HX Stomp and Helix, Headrush Gigboard and Pedalboard, Ampero, Mooer GE 250, POD GO, Zoom G6 and G11, NUX MG 30 and 300, Valeton GP 100 and Mooer GE 150. First of all we will hear all the units against the real amp in a mixed song, then we will hear just the guitar extracted from the comping parts of the demo song, and then just the solos…I hope you enjoy and please don’t forget to subscribe and hit the bell, as it would be really really helpful!!!

I really appreciate the time stamps! that must have taken you ages to do! I think for the 0:00 you may have to do 0:01 as it seems to just go back to where we were watching before, something to do with the way RU-vid remembers where we were up to in a video that we didn't finish watching.

Thanks Leo - fascinating and comprehensive. This video must have taken ages to record. Why you don't have 100,000 subscribers is beyond me ! I don't have any profound conclusions to share, other than all the units sound different but useable (perhaps with the exception of the Headrush which sounded rather unpleasant), and the Valeton (which I'd never heard of) is unbelievable value for money.

Zoom G6, Fractal FM3 and Quad Cortex are very faithful to the original JCM800. I was positively surprised with the NUX MG 300 and 30 and negatively surprised with the Mooer GE150 and 250. However, as we can see in the video, in a mix, all equipment did very well. This shows that, once again, Leo did an excellent job.

The Valeton got me by surprise. It's so cheap but sounds great in this mix. For me, it's still Helix/POD Go. The Headrush is a huge disappointment. The NUX sounds great, too. Ampero und GE250 are not bad either. Thank you for this video!

I keep thinking I should sell my QC as I'm not using it and the workflow of searching for captures and the right cab feels so chaotic, but the fact is it can sound so good that I'm hanging on in the hope that that part of the user experience will improve. Until them, I'm using my FM3 as my main rig. It's just the best allrounder for me. Another great track and video Leo!!

Excellent video…that’s a lot of work, Leo…all the modelers sounded good and the average listener would be hard pressed to tell the difference. The next step is to integrate the modeling software directly into a guitar or bass, which I believe Mooer has already done. Not a new concept but now we have the technology to fully realize this.

Id say they all sound good so these days it really doesn't so much matter which one is "the best tone" its more about the mixing and song writing. For this example if we are comparing exactly between the real JCM id say the Fractal and quad cortex did really well and Valeton I have never heard of but im really impressed. The Helix sounded good but different, sounded heavier distortion which I actually prefer, maybe im just saying that cause I own the hx stomp so I am bias. Speaking of bias im surprised bias FX 2 isn't in the mix?

I've noticed that on the majority of your videos when comparing modelers to a real rig, the real rig tends to have sharper highs (presence) and maybe scooped lows, but the modelers seem to boost some low end and trim the shimmeryness off of the highs. To my ear, the modelers sound a bit more desirable (I prefer a boomier mix) but I imagine some of the modelers can be made to better match the real rig by using on board EQ options. On your end (before RU-vid compression) do you find that modelers tend to flatten or EQ the signal in a way that makes an EQ effect necessary? I feel like all of the sounds are usable. I'm hoping to pick up the MG 30 soon (if inventory ever becomes available) :/

I have the Helix floor and the Ampero. I like the Ampero better. It sounds better and feels better. With a little tweaking I can dial in that exact marshall 800. Not so on my Helix. In this video the Fractal wins. Best RU-vidr for review's. Off the chart guitar skills! Thanks!

There are so many choices out there. Kemper has great amps but isn't easy to use nor cheap. Helix has the best mix of options (LT, Pod Go Wireless, HX Stomp XL, Stomp) for any budget but doesn't sound as good as FM3 or Boss GT1000 or 1000 core. Headrush has the best user interface but isn't as good as FM3, Helix, or Boss in other areas. It really comes down to your personal preference in sound, what you plan on using it for, and budget.

FM3, Quad cortex, Helix, Pod and Valeton in this order are the best ones. Worst ones, Mooer, Ampero, Headrush. Headrush disappointed the most. Maybe it needs more tweaking.

Loved the demo song as usual! All the modelers sounded pretty good, especially in a mix, they are really hard to tell apart. The Headrush was the weakest sounding to me. I have the POD Go and love its tones. Helix on the cheap is always nice. The super cheap modelers also all had usable tones. It's a great time to be a guitar player. God bless and rock on 😎👍🎸

The problem I have is that I like some of the modelers better than the real thing. This complicates things. 10:43 as an example. Great work Leo and all the mixes sounded great. That helix does not like that IR at all when isolated but does pull it off in the mix. For the money that Valeton is very appealing. For direct comparison the QC seems the closest when comparing 00:01 to 9:31. The Fm3 is missing a little definition when doing that similar comparison. However, if you had only played one version from any of them, I would have said it sounded good.

Wow, another great comparison, Leo. Fractal and Quad Cortex win hands down. However, I have to give it to Valeton, it came very, very close followed by Ampero and Nux. Headrush was quite frankly disappointing. Line 6, second disappointing. With some e-quing the other modelers can probably come even closer to the original. So, go for the expensive big boys or cheap stuff that's sound-wise almost equally as good? OK, the big boys have more features.... but do we need them?

HI, thank you for sharing...yes, the sound is pretty realistic also with cheap modelers...high end modelers have much more to offers in terms for instance of effect signal chain, I/O etc...it depends on what you need...but for sure we can be "creative" also with cheap modelers nowadays... thank you!

Sicuramente non è giustificata da una altrettanta drammatica differenza di qualità, considerando poi che le canzoni si ascoltano ormai al telefonino...ma questo è un altro paio di maniche. Hi, thx for this video, ton of work, very usefull, really ! Dont know if it’s me or the quality of my ears, but not so much difference for me. They all sounds pretty close in a mix. Without mix, we heard more differences. The real questions would be probably which worths the most for the price or which one we prefer the best to use. But this an another story, we need to try all to know that. 😂😅 I had some in the past, all sold, finally i prefer simplicity of a combo for my usage. But if i would gig or live a lot more, i ll go for that, probably the best solution. In my modest opinion, fractal FM3 would have my preference, nothing beat it in term of amps, FX, IR list. If i buy another one, i ll go Fractal only for the 300 amps included. I am this sort of guitar player, a great guitar, a good amp sound, one of two good effects, i am done. 😂

Good video as always! I cannot say anything negative, even about the more "affordable" units. The sounds are all good and usable, imho. It can get quite overwhelming these days if somebody just does not simply stop searching for the "best" tone. Find one that you like and feel comfortable playing and go with it. Imagine traveling back in time and presenting these tones to one of our guitar heroes. Would they hear all those imaginary tone "qualities", all those contemporary players pretend to hear?

Valenton GP-100 is a big surprise for me. However, I would not buy this product because the price is suspiciously low as for price like that you can't pay enginnering/development cost even in low cost countries! So there is a question how did they get to the technology they are using. Just look at the logo and the name. Doesnt it look familiar;)

Great comparison video! The FM3 sounds the most "exciting" to me. Clear but full and some interesting harmonic content. I am looking to buy one of these units but I also want the ability to capture some of my vintage amps in the same unit and still use some of my pedals. Which device would people recommend to do this?

Leo, I have a favor to ask. I've been watching your videos for several months now. I subscribed almost instantly. However, I noticed that you tend to focus on the same types of tones. It seems to me that there are many good options out there for high gain/classic rock sounds. However, it seems to me that many of these units disappoint when it comes to trying to capture something like a Texas blues/SRV tone. I really wish you would do a comparison of these units in that style and tone or at least include a short segment in your comparisons. This type of light to moderately overdriven blues tone seems to be the most difficult to duplicate in my experience. For all I know, you are a wizard at this type of Texas blues style but maybe you are also not accustomed to it or have not pursued mastering the style. Either way, even some simple comparison would really help me and I suspect others as this type of tone is so expressive and so central to my preferred style of playing. Just a thought and thank you so much for your extensive and awesome reviews :-)

You are right...I should do more SRV / Texas tones...actually I love these tones and I've studied in the past SRV...actually for me he is such a Master and he has such a great tone...that I'm scared about trying to emulate him...anyway... I will see what I can do...I need to find the right "real amp" to which comparing the modelers (maybe the fender supersonic could be the one...I have a supersonic)...and I have to verify if the modelers provide such amp... Thank you once more!

안녕하세요 영상 잘 보았습니다 저는 전에도 한번 이야기 했듯이 시각장애인입니다 현재 시각장애인이 사용할 수 있는 멀티 이펙터는 zoom g6 밖에 없습니다. g11정도만 되어도 조금은 좋았을텐데.. 수없이 여러번 당신의 영상들을 반복적으로 보았습니다. 정말 끝까지도 g6의 사운드를 좋게 생각하기는 어려웠습니다만 어제 G6을 주문하였습니다. 너무 멀티이펙터라는 것을 사용해보고 싶었기 때문이죠. 그냥 장난감처럼 사용하거나 유료 캡처들을 가득채운 Tonex를 g6의 샌드리턴에 연결하여 사용하거나 해 볼 예정입니다. 그런데 전에 다른 영상을 보니 g6을 이큐로? 보정하니 상당히 소리가 나아지던데 어떻게 하신건지 알려주실수 있을까요? 아무튼 덕분에 많은 도움 받았습니다 고맙습니다 한국에서

leo great review as always. i have a decent tube amp(blackstar ht60 mk2 2x12) and i am interested in one multi-effects pedal to use it mainly in 4cm and secondary as an amp modeller.i dont care so much of recreating other tube amp tones as close as possible but in creating great tones that can inspire me to play.from reviews that i have seen the boss gt 1000 is the unit that can satisfy most of my needs.if you were in my position and had to buy one multieffects pedal regardless of price point would you choose the boss or you would choose something else?my main concern is if its a good choice to spend 1000e for a 3 year old unit.

Hi, I see your point...GT1k and Helix are now becoming pretty old. Well, if you are e boss effect lover, I think that the GT1k is still the way to go. On the other hand, for a more modern unit, you can get an FM3...I don't know the waiting time actually to get one...but the general consensus is that for effects, the FM3 is a great unit! Thank you!

Thank you for this video Leo! Really great comparisons. I had already decided to get the MG-30 as an affordable and light weight solution. Of course the more expensive boards sound great but until Im gigging again the MG-30 would do... but I have to say, discounting the more costly models, I was quite taken away with the Valeton. I didnt consider it before so now I have more research to do :-) Many thanks for all your hard work!

Since most of these sound pretty great side-by-side, it all comes down to how user-friendly the pedal really is which makes me pleased that I have a headrush. Easily the best pedal to have.

Great video Leo, thank you! In the mix, although different one from the other, many do the job. In isolation the differences are enhanced and yes the better machines sound better ..... surprise is how much of that disappear in the mix for the audience, while the player might still feel all the difference.

AWESOME comparison! Thanks a lot! The HUGE differece is recognizable if to listen to that small sounds on 'accompaniment only' tracks when mediator is touching strins with muting. Difference with a real amp in that moment nearly disappears only in Fractal and Quad Cortex. I was looking to buy a NUX MG300, but since I heard how poor it sounds in that moment... Don't known now. Think I'll do an effort to make a DIY tube preamp (I'm electronics guy) and use a processor for effects and IR. How do you think, will it work?

Hi, thank you, I'm happy you like! Yes, a tube preamp with a processor for effect and an IR loader is a possibility and a solution. Obviously the tube preamp is gonna have a specific sound, where with an amp modeler you are gonna have many amps, but if it offers you the sound you like... Thank you for your message!

Hi Ricardo, it is really hard to test the feel of all these units at once...so far I have done some "feel" comparatives, for instance QC vs FM3 (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xwHVa_jAUU0.html) or Helix vs GT 1000 (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dCOoxrkCm5M.html). I will do more in future, but always one unit vs another one...I have not found yet a method to compare the Feel of multiples units. Thank you for your message!

I actually believe that Boss isn’t all that concerned with fidelity to existing amps. They are more focused on their own effects and X-amp models (which sound pretty good).

I think because they thought business would slow down but, I still have friends there and they say it is busy as ever so bummer but life goes on lol. I did primer for hundreds or maybe thousands of guitars at that point because I worked there for 5 years and I started doing satin a few months before I left and I was learning how to do color so it came out of nowhere when they told me.

@@0megalul309 GT 1000 is a beast. I have one. It does not have "amp modeling' in this sense. it has 'amp types'. As Nita Strauss says, she just dials until she finds a sound she likes. You can try to tweak it to sound like a marshall if you want, but that is not how it is designed out of the box. Still, it is great.

Leo, another superb comparison video. You have dialed these modellers in to the point that they are basically indistinguishable from each other. I firmly believe, even the most refined and trained listener would not be able to successfully detect which modeller is being used. This leads me to believe that the software used in modellers today is basically the same. There is definitely hardware differences, and these differences lead to most of the price differences. Very well done and thank you!

And yes, I/O, effect chain flexibility, etc. are important differences of one units from the other and make the price goes up or down...For instance fx loop, or parallel effects are features available only in specific units..etc. Thank you for sharing your opinion!

imho this vs this is not so "informative" for the mass, i explain: For example QC that now i have (and headrush), has the point of power in CAB simulation (irs + FUNCTIONS modelled) Using it with static and SAME IR from my pov is a reduction of machine expression, for example. I know that all these titles recall a lot of people, but, my personal opinion, it's better to extract in single videos the power of any single pboard, using dedicated and own tools. Pulling out its strengths. But this vs this in 2021 is so so... and all IMHO. Sayd This, the quality of yours video are always very good ! Complimenti. Perche' te li meriti. Thank you for sharing your opinion and for your suggestions...Actually I wanted to do something different with this video, using the "NO TALK" approach and putting together a lot of different pedalboards. Putting together a lot of different machines means that you have to, somehow, "standardize" the tests...using the same settings...the same IRs...etc. In this way maybe you are gonna loose the specific machine expression (as you said) but you gain an overview of the character of each machine. And if you want more in-depth details, you can check out my demo reviews, or my Quad Cortex vs FM3 vides, etc. where I made detailed comparisons. Nevertheless it's a nice conversation...and...well...each approach has his pros and cons in my opinion! Thank you Nik!
