if you figure how many birds you need first, you can figure how much feed you need for their lifetime: 64 birds= 32 F/ 32 M (before culling) 64/16 ounces = 4 lbs of feed per batch of birds per day 4 lbs x 56 days until harvest = 224 lbs 224 lbs of feed / 50 lb bags of feed = 4.48 bags (5 bags) 5 bags of feed x $20/ bag = $100 for the feed to grow out 64 birds to 8 weeks old (harvest) $100 / 64 birds = $1.56 / bird Of those 64 birds, 32 (the females) are laying eggs daily for 4 weeks? 4 weeks x 7 days/week = 28 days of laying 28 days per layer x 32 layers = 896 eggs 32 egg layers x $1.56 / bird = $49.92 for all females' lifetime of feed $49.92 for lifetime feed / 896 eggs = $0.056 per egg (with no losses) 64 birds was based on needing 16 birds per month for eating, and 32 for laying to replenish stock for eggs to eat and eggs to hatch (my math might be wrong on how many birds I need, but it doesn't hurt to pack the freezer!)

I like the $20/bag because that's what I get 22% protein crumbles for! So my big white Coturnix quail are eating about 5-cents per day of feed. I'm glad that you factored in for the males' feed consumption as well. Most people figure THAT and then wonder why they end up short on feed!

Spectacular info. Thanks. For those saying "but I only pay $xx.xx for 50lbs"... There are many variables. Cost of the feed is just one variable. Are you raising your own replacement hens? Factor in the chick feed before they're laying, too.

Thanks for the video, it's more motivation to get started and to order from you guys. I almost commented that you had a mistake but I see you just rounded 😀 from $0.0547 to $0.05. I did the math kind of backwards of you by figuring out total annual feed LBS first (1.5ozx365daysx1.2 to include rooster), then multiply by $0.40 for annual spend, then divide by 300 eggs/yr to get $0.05475/egg.

Keep in mind that compared to a regular large chicken egg, is equal to about 3 Jumbo quail, or 4 Standard quail eggs if used for cooking or baking. Which comes to be about $0.24 equivalent, using your numbers rounding up (3 Jumbo $0.08 per, and 4 Standard $0.06 per quail egg). Crazy thing is a the cheapest carton of eggs from Walmart is about $0.21 (rounded up) per chicken egg. You save $0.03 cents per chicken egg compared to the equivalent quail eggs... But you don't have any idea how fresh the store bought eggs are, or what the chickens were fed, and or treated (antibiotics) with. And you don't get to eat the chicken that laid the egg. So all in all, it is still worth having your own flock of quail that is a renewable source of food for your family, especially with all the love and care you put into the quail to keep them happy and performing well.
@MyshireFarm
@MyshireFarm 2 года назад
Agreed plus who knows if the store will have some on any given day with how it looks now
@carlossmith607
@carlossmith607 2 года назад
But using that logic, you don't store food, so how do you know there will be feed at the feed store when you place your order?
@carlossmith607
@carlossmith607 2 года назад
There's the taste, too. Some say quail eggs are the finest eggs to eat. I think the chicken egg industry just successfully lobbied to increase shelf life to 45 days. As cheap as Wal-Mart is, a gaurantee they aren't selling the freshest eggs, ever.
@trinam2503
@trinam2503 2 года назад
@@carlossmith607 that is a very real issue right now. Everytime I buy feed, I buy an extra bag. Bc there HAS been a couple times the feed didnt get a full delivery or even get their delivery at all. We live rural so the next feed store is 2hrs away. We also plan on putting our quail cages on the ground during the summer so the quail can eat grass and bugs. Which will lesson our dependance on feed for a couple months before they have to be moved into the garage when it gets cold. As with any animal, pet or livestock, you just have to plan ahead and or have alternate ways of feeding if necessary.
@farjadzaghi8137
@farjadzaghi8137 Год назад
well it is now 5$ per 12 chicken eggs in store so around 40cents each, when you keep the quail in garage will it smell up the whole place like chickens?

Do you have a video that talks about how much profit you can make selling eggs or meat? purchases over 500 will you get a discount? only females lay eggs? If I buy 500 eggs from you, which one would you have an idea of the rate at which females and males are born? thnaks
@MyshireFarm

Every avenue you can sell is ideal, I do not have a video about pricing as costs are different for everyone. We do not do discounts unless it is over 5,000 at one time and then we take off .5 cents an egg, only females lay eggs, and it is usually 50/50 male to female hatch

If you're just considering feed cost, the simplest calculation is to assume 1 egg per day. For jumbos: 2oz of feed goes in, 1 egg comes out. Therefore 1 egg costs 2oz of feed. And of course, feed prices vary.

One comment is your units were off… You’re giving the prices as .05 cents, there should be $.05 if it’s five cents. so your math was really in dollars, which .0 one would be one cent, denominated in dollars. I could see that confusing someone because if they think they’re paying .05 cents per egg, but they’re really paying five cents per egg that is a factor of 100 difference - - that’s my only comment, it was pretty easy to follow. I think there were a few small math errors along the way, but I would think people got the gist.

@@MyshireFarm if you ever want to run something by me, before you post it, I’d happily provide some input… I’m guessing someone else probably brought these things up, given that it was posted two years ago. I just discovered your channel and I’m very grateful for you sharing as much as you have. Anyway, just wanted to make that offer.

We have a video on that. You need 16-18 hours of light a day, age plays a factor, 3 quail per sq ft and 5 hens to 1 male
