Playing Quake for 20 years now, and Im good at it. But I never realyl managed bridge to rail. Watched your video, first try and repeated. And this is not the first video I watched about it, but the first that really explained the thing with the angles and how to exactly start a circle jump. Thanks man
From the many tutorials out there, this one is the best. Straight to the point and with all the overlays, cues and tips, it actually makes sense. I managed to learn to strafe jump and circle jump watching these (after seeing a lot of other sub par tuts which show some moves but don't actually teach). Clearly, I still need a lot of practice, but at least now I know the core stuff. Thanks!
Although i can already strafe jump,i'd say this is explained very good BUT if still takes a lot of practise (and not 5min if you spread that new players will get frustrated)
Not really important but still : you don't have to jump to change your mouse direction, you can do it while jumping, before or after, jumping just allows you to keep the speed as mentioned in the video. Really nice videos for beginners !
Very quick and to the point with simple steps even I can follow . Doing once at real time and then slowing it down makes it much easier to understand. Great video!

This is mind boggling that Strafe Jumping is essentially a bug in an earlier version of the game. I'm curious, as a developer, how much effort was put into preserving that bug throughout the game series.
It's actually 22.5 degrees at the very start and then gets slightly more obtuse the faster you travel. That's more complicated that what I wanted to dig into this video so I settled on 22 and 44 degrees just because I guess I like those numbers and it's close enough to get the point across. =D
Fantastic - exactly what I've been waiting for. I would love to see more guides like this if possible. I'm holding out for a proper training area in QC much like Quake Live. If it can contain a similar such as showing when to turn and showing that motion in the video, that would be fantastic. I know we can practice on the maps, but these aren't always clear. If they could add vocal and image requests when to jump, turning the mouse, which direction - it would be such a big help. Maybe it's wishful thinking of my part. Strafe jumping has been a huge bane for me in this game. It has caused so much frustration particularly because I really didn't know what I was doing whether it was right or wrong. I sought so many guides, videos and advice from so many people and whilst they were useful and pretty well put together, I always seemed to come away with the same issues. The biggest one was that I still wasn't sure what I was doing wrong. I knew I was doing something wrong because what I was doing didn't relate to the professionals. A lot of the time I was told to keep practicing, but the problem I had was that I was practicing the wrong things and I couldn't get the message across to get them to understand that. (I'm not laying the blame fully at their feet, perhaps I wasn't clear enough in asking for what I needed).
Something that I kind of wanted to imply in this video is that knowing when to turn is not as important as what many players may believe when starting out. Optimally, if speed is your objective, you don't want to turn at all; you just want to keep riding the same roughly 22 degrees angle for as long as possible. Only switch to the opposing side when you must in order to avoid running into a wall. In a real match, if speed is your goal, you should think about where to start your strafe jump so you don't have to turn at all to get where you want to go; or at least as little as possible. Most of the time you're not going to need to before you need to pick up an item, or find someone to shoot in the face.
I'd like to know how players can make those abrupt changes of direction in stairs and tight corridors. I always bump in every conceivable object on the map. Very frustrating. This video was great, simple and right on point.
They're probably using an air control champion like Anarki or Sorlag, also there's Slash that has crouch sliding. For everybody else it's not much more complicated that landing on the ground and quickly restarting another strafe jump.
I'm diamond rank in duel and 2v2 and I didn't know that there was a penalty for holding space. I'm not holding space anyway because it feels more natural to course correct when tapping. But still, wasn't sure if there was a penalty or not.
I didn't know there was a penalty for holding jump! There are times where I don't hold jump because I need to do mini turns on the ground in order to course correct more, buy now I guess it's better to hold right before. Thanks for the video.
I too like to tap to get those small pivot turns on the ground. Something I thought about adding, but I just wanted this to be as simple as possible to get give new players the tools to play at a reasonable speed.
The acceleration penalty is not an intentional feature. It's a speed normalization bug: www.reddit.com/r/QuakeChampions/comments/9ul2is/why_holding_jump_slows_your_strafejump_to_50_or/ Kinda like in Doom 1&2, you ran faster if you moved diagonally. With Quake 3/Live/QC it's the same, except this time you move slower when you mix horizontal movement with vertical movement. Jump counts as a movement direction (move_up).
Didn't know there was an actual fixated angle where it starts kicking in, i thought it depended from initial speed or direction. Now i know that when it doesn't go up i need to correct more instead of just waiting for it, or that i should watch away from the path so i can start it with a better angle before resetting. As a new player, i saw circle jumping as a direct concequence of strafe jumping learning: i decided to learn strafe first becouse it seemed more useful, but without even trying i found myself circle jumping. I suggest new players to do that.
Some people say you should learn Circle Jumping first, but if I can get someone's attention for just once video I think Strafe Jumping is more important; This is why I did Circle Jumping as "Episode 0". I'll also point out that Nyx currently has "EZ-Strafe" which means she doesn't have to turn as significantly to accelerate and Sorlag's "Bunnyhopping" passive allows her to accelerate some without any turning. Left those out because I want these videos to be as brief and to the point as possible as well as especially the EZ-Strafe attribute of Nyx is subject to change. Thanks for the comment!
Could you explain the different "beats" in strafe jumping (I think their called that) Like 2 beat, full beat and half beat or whatever. I've seen them mentioned but dont fully understand what they are and would appreciate an explanation as detailed as the one you gave here
I found a video on that a little while back here on YT, but don't remember its name. Just search Strafe Jump Tutorial or something and you should find it. Honestly, other than having a more specific and academic understanding of the different nuances, it's really not necessary. Most of what you "need to know" to get good will come from watching matches from Pros' perspectives and then matching it in game. And/or just learning the feel. Good luck!
I've got a bunch of other simpler explanation videos planned, but instead of explaining different beats or styles of strafe jumping I'd like to breakdown the actual mechanics similar to Matts Ramblings video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rTsXO6Zicls.html combined with the techniques demonstrated here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gpir6ZZKmcM.html. However I want demonstrate this in a way that given any direction you're traveling that you can be pointing your gun any one of 8 different direction and with the appropriate keys pressed you'll be accelerating at the maximum rate. This is because I believe it's more important to be pointing your gun at where it's best to be pointed and then pushing the directional keys appropriate keys to accelerate; rather than locking you into using specific styles and just pointing your gun wherever those styles put it.
Explaining strafe jumping gets complicated if you stick around the notion of strafing and "strafe acceleration". Strafe jumping is not about strafing, it's about curving in air. What really happens on every strafe jump technique is that you curve in air and the center point of the curve is always in the general direction of the movement key(s) that you're pressing. Strafe jump movement is kinda like a combination of spinning around a strip pole and pulling yourself toward the pole at the same time. So with the 8 movement directions, you can imagine that you have 8 stiff arms sticking out horizontally off the center off your body and whatever hand you grab the pole with will dictate the direction where the center point is.
God I miss strafejumping and skiing. All these kids today think they're playing hard games...I learned to strafe-jump with a controller on a 56k Sega Dreamcast. That was back before we ever even thought of "aim assist". And we were playing against people on PCs with mouse/kb and broadband lmfao. I usually got spanked by those guys. But there were a number of times when I did the spanking. And the salt was delicious. We had such a nice little online community. We actually set up and scheduled 1v1 tourneys between all the people on Gamefaqs. Rud3boy was the king of 1v1 tournaments.
I wonder if half-beat would be easier to learn. You should consider teaching this in Reflex or a modded Quake game so you can use the strafe-jump indicators.
Best illutration of how to do this I've seen including info . . . @QCP and everyone, what is used or how to display the speed as in video please? And can this be generally done across Q3 games? thanks!
You have to purchase the game to have access to Custom Maps. I tried to demonstrate as much as possible in the Tutorial so that free-to-players would be able to replicate as much as possible there.
i have been strafing since closed yet i cant seem to strafe like a pro, i keep getting these gaps where my accelometer keeps stuttering for just about a second, i need like a pro strafe guide or maybe im just to bad to ever get the timing down but im sure there are some advanced principles i dont know of
If you're not accelerating that means you're not turning far enough into your strafe. I recommend not trying to switch from side to side as much as possible and just follow a single angle. While the training stage is a pretty good place to practice this and available to free-to-players, the area under bridge on Blood Covenant is probably the best: streamable.com/j7oom You may be surprised how little you need to switch sides when you plan your route accordingly. In the latest essentials video I strafe jump down the entire corridor with just a left facing strafe jump. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6gZF8Eikg5g.html. Once snapping into and following a strafe jump becomes like second nature, I believe snapping to the opposing side will come naturally over time.
I got good at strafe jumping in open areas, but I get stuck a lot while passing through doors, is there a good way to course-correct so I dont bump into a wall everytime I try to pass through a door?
delay the jump by a split second so that it slows you down a tad enough to correct the angle of approach. Rapha explained this pretty well in one of his strafe jumping videos. You can also partially clip the door with your shoulder and not be stopped by it, also explained in Rapha's vid
What has helped me is to watch footage of matches with Pros to actually *see* what it looks like to do it right, then try it out. Though, specifically, try to go more dead center of the pathway and not hug the walls. Undercommit to your speed if that helps you not feel like a pinball. Another thing is to try to do this when you walk through hallways and doorways in real life; don't cut corners or hug walls when you turn. This can help your brain focus on what that mindset *feels* like and will help you figure out how to replicate that ingame much better. Hope that helps some!
Why does this mechanic even exist? Like, what is the logic behind moving a bit to the side = speed? Was it some sort of old bug that became a mechanic?
@@OkyDooky I have two channels actually, but I haven't published anything meaningful in over 6 years ha!. While I was sharing some earlier drafts of these videos Careem from Quake ChampionsPRO contacted me and asked if I wanted to post them here. I figured it would be a better place for them so he brought me on board! I'm keeping a log of 120fps benchmarks on my RobKhonsu channel that I'm using the post these videos. So if you're curious on my system and what performance I get with every patch you can check those out there. There's also the pretty dead i208khonsu channel with tournament videos from "back in the day" when I was a shoutcaster at Radio iTG and later a tournament organizer for Street Fighter IV and other fighting games. I have all the videos from QuakeCon 2009 uploaded there ready to go public. They were taken down for copyright violation for some reason many years ago and I was no longer involved in the scene and just didn't bother to deal with it. So you can subscribe to that channel when I get around to the boring work of titling, describing, tagging, and playlisting all of them. Careem wanted to fix the tags on this video before publishing so I'm going to check out his wisdom first and get at publishing those old videos soon.
Well it's a feature that's been in almost every quake game since the first quake. It's why I like the game. If I didn't like strafe jumping I'd be playing another shooter game
Yeah, it's pretty stupid. "Uuuh, you're not moving in this absurdly bizzarre and illogical way virtually no one ever would come up on their own? Well, tough luck, you're now slower than everyone else".
i have been strafing since closed yet i cant seem to strafe like a pro, i keep getting these gaps where my accelometer keeps stuttering for just about a second, i need like a pro strafe guide or maybe im just to bad to ever get the timing down but im sure there are some advanced principles i dont know of
Saber Goli you sure you're jump timing is consistent? Next time try just holding the jump and see if the stutters still happen. This way you can determine if it's due to your timing.
I'm planning a more advanced video that digs into some of the explanation here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rTsXO6Zicls.html combined with the techniques demonstrated here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gpir6ZZKmcM.html. It's really not a timing thing it's all about following that 22 degrees-ish angle though the strafe jump. Matts Rambling's video explains it better than what I do here, but I was more focused on keeping things simple for the introduction than scaring new players away with charts and graphs. =D
